There was the old McDonalds. 1981 was great year. Snow, rain and partly sunny....the forecast every day! Live volcano across the way. Hiking and Fishing. Great time.

I was stationed there 77-78. Best time in my life. Worked in the commissary warehouse. The underground tunnels took you from the barracks to the exchange, the rec hall or EM club.

I lived on Adak TWICE as a young girl when my father was stationed there. '61-'62 and '67-'69. I had dreams about it until just a few years ago. I remember loving it, but then again I was adventurous and loved "touring" the old barracks.

Seeing this is such a weird flashback! In June 27 1994 ,I was a musician in one of 2 bands ( plus one drunken comedienne) that were sent to Adak Naval Air station to entertain the personnel for 9 straight days, before returning to Tacoma Washington. We all were totally unprepared for what we saw. The naval air station was in the process of scaling back operations, prior to shutting down completely. The US govt had built a town, complete with a complete school system,a large apartment complex,& fast food restaurants to accomodate the families of the service members at the time. With the dependents, all long since being shipped back to the mainland US, what we found was a ghost town, left to rot in the harsh elements in this brutal climate.Fortunately, we all knew we were homeward bound in a short period of time--All the great military personnel we got to know knew EXACTLY when they would be shipped out to any location better than this God forsaken place!!!

I remember that housing. I use to ask why would they have housing with s sun room right in the back of the house in one of the coldest place on the world. But I was very nice. We had a upstairs down stairs. You could sit leftovers from large dinners wrapped in the garage. It was just that cold. I love and miss Adak!!!

I lived in Adak from 1979-81 while working for a civilian defense contractor there. Non of those two story homes were there at the time, just single story. I lived in the furnished Visiting Officers Quarters the entire time. It would have been nice to have lived in a home like those.

I went to Ann C Stevens elementary and Bob Reeve Highschool. I remember Fridays after school where a group of friends would just take off and go hiking to some random direction with just pocket fishing rods. We got picked up by shore patrol a couple times for being in the wrong areas. I was there in the late 80's

2013 and 2014 , Worked there during cold season for Icicle, had a blast exploring all the abandoned buildings and homes. The high school is still opened but needs upkeep, however I imagine it when it was fully functional with the pool and weight room........kicked ass!!!. Glad I had a chance to see this place , even in its desolate state it's a sight to see.

I was about 11 or 12 when i lived there. It's true there wasn't a lot of variety. But there was a bowling alley and a theater. I remember watching all the original star trek movies back to back there lol. I loved hiking with my folks or just going "exploring" or salmon fishing. Sometimes they'd have bonfires on the beach too. Thinking back i wonder what they were burning. There were no trees lol. You couldn't go in the water though. It would kill you.

So basically the only ones visiting this island are former Navy personnel? Wikipedia says "Males had a median income of $46,429 versus $35,000 for females" for Adak, Alaska. What do the residents make money on?

Hunting is a big business or them. They put in a herd of Caribou which expanded and tourists/hunters come in and hunt trophy animals such as waterfowl and caribou. There is also a slowly growing fishing and cannery industry which can easily be sustained as the airport can accommodate 737 sized airplanes.
