Finally, the fateful day is here! #C63 S E Performance driven on the windy roads of Malaga in Spain. No excuses of unfinished software, production vehicles, or anything else: today, truly is judgement day for the new four-cylinder hybrid version of our favourite #AMG.
I will first recount the history of the name, because today’s topic is of Identity. Mercedes might remind you of the 190E that Senna made famous on the Nurburgring, another 4 cylinder super saloon. But the legend of the real C63 truly begins from the W204 series and it’s 6.2 litre mega engine - a naturally aspirated unit also found in legends like the SLS AMG and the GT3 racing cars. Ingrained in my memory is Jeremy Clarkson coming up behind Richard Hammond in the ax murderer with headlights, something that left a huge impression on my young mind. Years later, I’ve now owned 12 of these incredible mg machines. Headlined by the 506 and C63 Black Series - this was the first step, and a hard act to follow. Despite our fears of turbocharging, the W205 proved to be an incredible car with superb sound, particularly in low speeds. The C63 Coupe stands out as the best, with a unique body and epic handling.
This one is totally different. No RWD, No V8. It’s a 680 BHP 4 cylinder engine, aka the M139L First found in the A45. In here, that engine is switched longitudinally, and we add to it the MGU H electric gas turbocharger from the AMG ONE, with a big AMG performance battery and an electric motor on the rear. This is the so called P3 hybrid system.
The 0-60 is claimed at 3.4seconds - I absolutely smashed that figure, as you’ll see! We also have to talk about the Boost mode, and why it’s strange. Plus the big implications of power to weight ratio because of boost mode.
Up next on on RBR is the new RS4 Competition first drive, and then a surprise AMG video! Subscribe to support us and see them first. :)

@@kunalmore5212 I don't doubt the 0-60 mph times he's recorded on the MBUX. If you don't believe, check out carwow's review of this car, he shows similar timings as well. In straight line, this is fast as hell. I am not aware of the M3/M4 0-60 times, regardless straight line performance is anyway not a useful indicator in my opinion. There are tons of American cars with great 0-60 times, but can't carry speed around a corner. This could be better on a track than an M3/M4 because of the potent drive train and the traction, but as Raz points out in the video, it lacks the emotion and sensation, hence not the car for me.

Let’s be honest, traditionally, the drivers choice was the the M3, the best daily was the RS4, but if you wanted a monster, you went for the C63s. The V8 was the main reason you bought this car, it was what made it unique and unlike anything else in the segment. Also, making a car so much heavier, surely that is not the most environmentally friendly option, especially since the process of making and then disposing of the batteries etc is awful! I dread to think what it’ll be like to run when it’s out of warranty…..

The V8 at this class was pointless. You can buy a car from a class above, also with a V8, with far more power. If pricing is an issue you can obtain the preceeding engine option for the class above, for more or less the same or lower price. E.g the 550i with a V8, or the E53. Alternatively you can wait a year or 2 and the top end M5/E63s are now in the same price range. No brainer.

For me, AMG is all about the experience. Im not talking about lap times, nor how much G-force it can handle in corners. I dont care how fast it goes from 0-100km/h, neither do I even worry about the fuel economy. A real AMG 63 has always been that one special car in every class of MB, the one car that always felt special from the moment you start the engine. It doesn't care about your lap times, it eats rear tires like there is no tomorrow, it literally burns money converting gasolin into loud explosions and it makes a sound that gets every other car manufacturer envious. The new C63s E Performance sure is a great piece of engineering, it's faster, it's more nimble, it's more advanced. But in the process of achieving higher numbers, it has lost its identity, its heritage, its soul. With tears in my eyes, I say goodbye to the V8s. No one that buys a $100k+ car has issues with the costs of maintenance, or costs after warranty or complexities. I have a 2020 E63s and its rock solid so far, but if something happens after the warranty life, then it is what it is. You can always buy an extended warranty. My advice, dont buy an expensive German super sedan unless you can afford it.

The prior gen v8 was what got me to fall in love with AMG. This car, while looking gorgeous…it lacks soul. Having driven several AMG cars with both a V6 & V8. I always felt the V6 was never a true AMG car. That magical AMG feeling Raz describes here was only available on a V8. The moment I heard the C63 was halved to 4 Cylinders, I instantly knew no matter how much power they squeeze out of that little 4 Banger it will never be the same. Raz has honorably confirmed what most of us had feared. RBR did us all a favor and removed the AMG badge for now. I truly hope he gets an opportunity to put it back up soon! 💔AMG💔

I truly hoped and expected they would move the interior upscale. Some thing I was okay with. But it is absolutely unacceptable quality for 50k USD - even if you are okay with the overall design of the interior being dominated by screens. For 100k USD in the AMG, they absolutely must improve the materials. A new steering wheel and seats are simply not enough.

But having owned my f80 M3 for almost 5yrs now, and a e90 V8 M3 and 135i before it, I can tell you, even though I love to get the back end out and powerslide out of corners, even after all these years (and a BMW M high performance driving course) later, I still can’t do what Chris Harris or the Stig does on tv. Those skills take years or many hours on the track to achieve imo. So in short, if you like the car when driving it, just get it, don’t be bothered about “what it can do”, most people will never be able to extract 70% of what these cars are capable of, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get one. You get 4 cyl turbos in dozens of cars for half the price or less, absolutely not worth AT ALL, Mercedes must be taking you for idiots if they expect you to buy this.

I’m confused as to who’s gonna buy this car. I’m a BMW person but there was always so much emotion in AMGs particularly the V8s. There were always better handling cars, lighter cars, faster cars, but they had so much feeling. But without that, what’s gonna keep people buying it? There’s used porches that perform better, Ms that are more nimble in the same category, etc

If the car flops , they'll go back to a v8 or atleast v6 just like porsche when they dropped the 4cylindet cayman gts , nobody bought it so they went back and put a 4l back in the car and the sales sky rocketed again

I spent all of lockdown obsessively looking into new cars. I started with a C63 estate but looked at every single other option. I watched every single KZread video on the C63 and potential alternative and I kept coming back to the C63. I felt certain I was making the right choice. When I picked up the car I was ecstatic. I still burst out laughing when I’m able to play about with it when the dog isn’t in the boot. Almost 2 years later and I’m still crazy about it. I feel so lucky to own one of the last cars out of the factory and I genuinely can’t see me selling it. I look at this new model and wonder who would discount so many other cars at the same price and decide to order this. Surely an M3? A taycan GTS? An E63 ffs. They should have gone all electric with this and made a model 3 performance killer. Certainly should be called a C55S IMO

How it should have been: - Mild hybrid like the C43 AMG - A45s engine reworked - electric assisted turbo - small electric motor (adding 20hp and 200nm of torque to help the combustion engine at low rpm) - 9 Speed DCT gearbox - Rear wheel drive only - no rear steering (because it feels awkward to drive) - Make it has light has possible (with carbon panels and so on) - focus on the driving experience (exhaust note, dynamics, feedback from the controls, etc...) Done!

🙏Please Raz, I don't know how nobody told you, but please, you should upgrade your microphone in pro of the overall video quality. I love your videos and you, but your voice in all the videos sounds so muted that I always need to raise the volume to 100% to hear you propperly. You are the best catching exhaust sounds, but not your voice. I wonder I'm not the only one with this opinion. Maybe you can ask for one on christmas 😉 Keep going and have a nice Christmas!
