can you imagine if Ferrari did something oldschool and built a naturally aspirated V6 bolted to a 6-speed manual? edit : ok. so I actually find it really kind of odd how we all collectively lust over these old classics for their tangibility, tactility, that mechanical manual shift lever, the effort, the challenge, the sound, etc. We all love simplicity, lightweight fun, tossable sports cars. And yet, sports car manufacturers, ie Ferrari, are not at all delivering anything remotely close. Hell I used to have a big Lamborghini Countach poster in my bedroom as a kid, but I know 100% sure my son won't give a flying f*ck about anything Ferrari makes now; none of them are desirable. ...am I the only one feeling this way?

Enzo had a shrine to Dino in his office and couldn’t bear to leave the factory after Dino died. He was the first to see Dino’s shrine in the morning and the last to see it at night. The V6 was Dino’s project and Enzo immortalised his son with this beautiful car. It couldn’t get any closer to Enzo’s heart than this. It couldn’t be more Ferrari, as you say.

I think history shows that this is 100% a purebred Ferrari. Sure, it was taboo for them to not use the V12, but it still had the grunty engine and the racing prowess through the Lancia Stratos. Oh yeah, and it had trunk space. Truly a testament to Ferrari’s excellence.

The car that replaced the Dino was the 308 GT4. It wasn’t as beautiful, but the experience behind the wheel was almost exactly the same: excellent handling, tactile steering feel, excellent gated shifter, the engine sounded the same. It also had 4 seats and two good sized trunks. It’s considerably cheaper than a Dino 206 or 246, but if you want an incredible driving experience, it’s a fantastic car to drive. Some people thought the 308 GT4 was ugly, but when you see it in person it’s actually looks fantastic.

@@Mike-rk8px Fun fact - the Dino 308 GT4 is also 'not a Ferrari'. Its Bertone body is elegant as you say, just not what Ferraristi expect a Ferrari to look like. Those rear seats are pretty tiny. The wheelbase was shortened just a little (by 210mm) for the Farina bodied 308 GTB.

I think Dinos are real Ferraris. You should too. Here is the history behind the sub-brand from what I have read, most from a coffee-table sized book on Ferrari I bought back in the 90s. Classic street Ferraris were all front-engine V12. Enzo knew his customer well. His engineer son, Alfredo, was designing smaller V6 and V8 in the early- to mid-50s for Scuderia Ferrari. Enzo maintained that his customers would prefer the traditional GT format with a long hood and large V12 engine. Things continued until rival Lamborghini fascinated the world with its mid-engine Miura. Let us not forget Lamborghini was a Ferrari customer whose feedback was rebuffed by the old man, setting him on the path to switch from farm tractors to street cars, ushering in an era of rival Italian sports cars. Ferrari gave the green-light to launch a less expensive model, using the smaller, lightweight engine designed by his late son, who died from muscular dystrophy in 1956. Staying true to his idea that Ferrari should remain the pinnacle of Italian design, he chose Dino, his late son's nickname, as the brand. It would allow him to position the brand as its own, allowing it to compete with the Porsche 911 in price and as a target market. Thus Dino was designed not to compete with Lamborghini but rather Porsche as an entry-level Ferrari, perhaps how a quartz-based Tudor watch is considered a distinct sub-brand of Rolex. Neither Dino nor Tudor is inferior in quality, but rather of different design targeted toward a different, perhaps entry-level connoisseur.

If I had my choice I'd pick this over any other Ferrari. The looks, the sound, and it looks like a super fun car to drive.

What a beautiful car! Imagine this brand new in the 70s how incredibly exotic it would have been

I wish I could go back in time to the late 70's when these would pop up for sale in the Road & Track classifieds for 20 thousand. I'd buy em all.

I have a '72 corvette. Its nice to see what a higher end sportscar was like at the time. Crazy to imagine comparing this to a Vette in '72. But i do see why this would cost more. Beautiful. 😍

Oh Tedward, you're tugging at my heart. I looked at a used one in 1973. It was 20K which was a lot of money back then and I couldn't afford it. I bought a new '73 240Z for just under 5K. The sound was just intoxicating. (the Dino, not as much the 240Z)👍👍

@@spongeborgtheford4971 It was a 2.4L inline six. For what it was and what it cost, it held it's own. I put headers and a free flow exhaust on it. That did help.

I remember looking at a used 246 on a luxury car dealer's forecourt just before and just after they ceased production. The price doubled in the space of 24 hours..

In the early sevetnies I drove one. The 6 cylinder comes originally fro FIAT (2600). The car was not spectcular fast, but handy in town as well on the highway (according to Dutch conditions). I paid - converted to the Euro - little less than 5000,-

The Dino and the Daytona were the first two Ferraris I ever saw when I was young. I always wanted a Ferrari back in those days but I wound up with a Lotus Europa which was a mid engine contemporary of the 246. Then later on a few Porsches.
