Driving over Volcanoes in Saudi Arabia // Overland Series Ep.28

We explore the region of Medina, Saudi Arabia including some of the many dormant volcanoes. What we didn't expect is that we would be able to drive up to the top.
We leave Taif and head towards Mecca. As non-muslims we are not allowed inside the holy city at all, so we go around and visit Jeddah instead. We are fascinated by the traditional buildings in Al Balad and see all the development that is taking place here to prepare for Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia.
But what we can visit as non-muslim is the city of Medina. We even can get close to the mosque and see the many pilgrims visiting and praying.
But after two days in cities, we were craving nature. We saw in the satellite maps the number of volcanoes in Saudi Arabia and decided we would like to get close to them. We drove over very sharp volcanic rocks in three colors, sand, and wadis. It is one of the most beautiful offroad tracks we have driven so far.
But the best part is being able to camp on top of a white volcano a be alone to explore the next morning. But even then were surprised about what we found inside.
Enjoy the ride!

It is stunning! We would like to come back one day and spend more time. The area is so beautiful! the track to get to the craters is one of the most epic off-road tracks we have driven. Absolutely recommended. But be prepared to destroy your tyres, the rocks are extremely sharp. Thank you again Steve for your comment and hope one day you come by this area! 🤩

The drone footage is superb. That was a great serendipitous decision. That’s the epitome of adventure travel. I reckon though, that the Defender would have driven the the crater rim. Perhaps you would have, had you been with another vehicle. Thanks for this episode. Keep it up! 👍🏻🙏🦘

Thank you so much Grahame! It was one of the best decisions of our trip. We were amazed by what we were seeing every 5 minutes. So gorgeous! With our 3ton Land Rover it was not possible to get up the vertical wall next to our campspot. Even trying was extremely dangerous: Very steep, loose gravel, deep holes and cliffs to both sides. But! later we realized that if you come from the other side, there is a better path that we could have done. Check the last shot of the crater, you can see the other access. Next time!

Saudi Arabia blew our mind! It was extraordinary! I hope the people keep it as raw as possible and it doesn't turn into a tourist entertainment place like the UAE. We loved the open spaces and the diversity we found there and would not doubt coming back again in the future. It also helps that we felt always very welcomed and respected in the country 🤗
