Driving My Van To Northern Scotland

In this video I drive my van to northern Scotland! After weeks of preparations, I am excited to be setting off on my first Scotland vanlife adventure!
I just bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland. In 2011, I moved from Scotland to the Middle East and have lived and worked overseas pretty much ever since then. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in my home country Scotland and I’ve never even visited places like the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Skye or the NC500.
I am a huge fan of campervan travel and alternative living, having spent over 600 nights living in vans, it’s my favourite way to travel due to the incredible freedom, adventure and affordability.

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!

Hi Ruth, thanks for showing me the inside of the female toilets I've not been in one before. Something to bear in mind especially with an older vehicle, unless you really have to don't run the fuel tank down to almost empty, you could suck up any dirt lying at the bottom of the tank. As for services, I think you can stay overnight but there is a fee to pay, also GPS, I've been led up the garden path with them before, not literally of course. I usually follow a road map to give me the main roads I need and then turn on the GPS when I'm closer to my destination. Take care Ruth, looking forward to the next episode.

Just got a spare key for a Renault master. Over £200. And it didn't even come with a blade. The Renault dealer told me that's extra and then you have to get it cut. Beginning to wish that I had kept my Rickman Rancher campervan. The key for that was £6 from the local key cutting shop.

I tend to use Apple Maps rather than Google Maps as I’ve experienced GM taking me off the main routes and on to unsuitable small country roads. They don’t seem to realise in Scotland these are often single track and not suitable for larger vehicles. So Apple Maps are worth a try if you use an iPhone. Plus you can share your location with the person you are going to meet via the app. Which is really handy.

Hey Ruth, great first journey! We just returned from a 4 day trip to Indiana, for a family reunion, and 2 nights at a remote campsite in the Housier National forest. Got back to our Kentucky small town, fuel low light had just come on. 28 gallons of diesel @ 3.88.9 = 110. USD . Averaged 12.7 MPG .Our "Serenity" is a converted shuttle bus, fully fueled and with full water tank we weigh almost 12,000 pounds.

@@ruthaisling our fuel is cheap compared to the rest of the world, many of us don't understand that, and bitch whine and moan about it. 2 years ago we filled up on the Olympic peninsula, West of Seattle WA, @5.89/gallon, highest we've paid. Van life in the US, It's big ! (Texas is just shy of a thousand miles east to west.) I'm from Kentucky, almost 400 miles east to west. One of my favorite states to travel is Montana, you could spend 2 months and not cover all the beautiful places. (But don't go in winter, unless you really like cold temps !)

@@ruthaisling I didn't mention the people. I see lots of KZreadr vids about rude people, thefts and harassment. We have had a couple of stops where folks party late into the night, our dogs would growl about it, didn't help getting a good nights sleep. Overall, the folks we've met were good, kind people. I enjoy meeting fellow campers, and have found that if you treat folks the way you want to be treated, it's all good.

Hi, Ruth. I have just become aware of your channel, one of hundreds now on a similar and what seems to be a popular theme. I left the UK in 2007 upon retirement from the RAF (13 years of which in Scotland - Leuchars, Kinloss and Lossie) and have lived in the US (now as a Naturalized US citizen) since 2012. Where were you living and what were you doing? Not sure if I could afford to live in the UK today for the obvious reasons, housing primarily, but I do miss the UK and Scotland particularly which I view as a second home. I love Skye and the Inner and Outer Hebrides (great for wild camping) and spent a lot of time there. If I did come back when I retire, it would probably be doing what you are doing now for 6 months out of the year. I have my RAF pension to live on. How easy was it for you coming back, and were you still entitled to NHS treatment, and did you have to make up any NI shortfalls? Cheers Garry Harriman South Caroliana

Hi Garry, thanks for your comment. I left the UK in 2011 and was working in the Middle East for a multinational company. I moved with them to Australia in 2014. In 2017 decided I wanted to work for myself online as I wanted the freedom to live wherever I choose and not be tied to one place. I have ran online businesses since then and lived in different locations around the world including the last 3 years in Japan. I've been paying UK NI contributions monthly via direct debit, it's quite a good deal. Haven't used the NHS much in my lifetime luckily but if I am registered here in the UK again and paying tax and NI I believe I'm able to use it? Doing campervan travel for 6 months of the year would be nice, lots of more affordable places with better weather to spend the other 6 months, I'll probably do something similar in the future!

Hi Ruth - was wondering what prompted you to come back to the UK, to live (presumeably ?), given the state of the Country at present. Would have thought, as a bit of a globe trotting gal, that Mainland Europe would have been a better bet ? South of France, maybe ? The scenery in Scotland is amazing though, and I look forward to your adventures.

2:36「何ぃ!!」 But the sound effect doesn't work properly in the context because it means (or has the nuance that) something like "What are you heck talking about to me, huh?" rather than simply saying "What is this?"

There is no "somehow" the GPS took you on the back roads. All GPS receivers have settings for the user (you) to choose what types of routes you find acceptable. If you do not learn to use your device, and you do not compare the suggested route to a map (google maps for example) then, you're following the suggestions of a computer, blindly. You are smarter than that, so please set up your preferences in your GPS receiver or phone, so you're not surprised. Also, compare the selected route to an overall map of the area, so that you can compare, and recognize when suggested routes are not to your liking.
