In the winter, all kinds of frozen surprises await you on the roadway. Some of these include:
Black Ice - Water refreezing, usually at night, can coat roadways and sidewalks, surprising drivers and pedestrians alike. Be especially careful when driving at night, especially after rain or recent snowmelt.
Snow Squalls - A sudden burst of heavy snow could bring sudden whiteout conditions, making roads slippery or even unnavigable. Slow down, and if struck, stay in your car to avoid being hit by other cars.
Bridges - Remember, bridges freeze first! Use extra caution when driving over bridges and overpasses, as the entire structure could be below freezing.
Flooding - Roads can flood from a combination of heavy rain, snowmelt and ice dams. Never drive around road closure signs to avoid getting caught in flood waters.
Freezing Rain - Rain falling on frozen ground will produce extremely slick roads. When freezing rain is in the forecast, it’s best to avoid all travel.
Fog - Dense fog can quickly reduce visibility. When driving in the fog, slow down and turn on your low-beam headlights so other drivers can see you. If you must pull off the road, pull as far to the side as you can to avoid being struck by another driver.
Avalanche Dangers - Drivers, hikers and skiers should listen to any and all warnings and avoid areas where avalanches are expected. If you are caught in an avalanche while driving, stay in your car and turn off your engine to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
Holiday Traffic - The roads are going to be packed as people all over the country travel for the holidays. Consider leaving early to beat the rush, and be sure to check your WeatherBug to be aware of any weather concerns before you get on the road.
No matter where you are in the United States, you should always keep a winter kit in your car. This should include traction material like cat litter, sand and road salt, non-perishable food and bottled water, blankets, flashlight and batteries, ice scraper and brush, tow rope, jumper cables, paper maps, first aid kit, spare clothes and warmth accessories, road flares, cellphone charger and battery backup and water-proof matches.
Safe travels, and happy holidays!
