Driving in the Mississippi Delta Rosedale, MS Abandoned Building, Old Churches, Robert Johnson Blues

March 25, 2023
Driving through small town Rosedale, MS on the Great River Road, Highway 1, alongside the Mississippi River. There are quite a few beautiful old churches and houses in the town. There are several old, abandoned buildings from yesteryear. Rosedale is one of two county seats for Bolivar County. Cleveland, Mississippi is also a county seat.
This is the town where many claim that Mississippi Delta Blues singer, Robert Johnson, "sold his soul to the devil" at the Crossroads of highway 1 and 8. This is located south of town. Rosedale is also featured in an episode of the TV series, Supernatural. The show mentions Robert Johnson and the legend taking place in 1930.
From Wikipedia:
......" In 2007, the Mississippi Blues Commission placed a historic marker at Rosedale's former Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad depot site, designating it as a site on the Mississippi Blues Trail. The marker commemorates the sites in the original lyrics of legendary blues artist Robert Johnson's song "Travelling Riverside Blues". He traced the railway route which ran south from Friars Point to Rosedale among other stops, including Vicksburg and north to Memphis."......

Nice, pleasant video. Lucinda Williams mentions Rosedale, Mississippi on her song 2 Cool 2 be 4-Gotten from her Car Wheels on a Gravel Road album from 1998. It's a good song on a great country-blues album and definitely worth checking out. "You can't depend on anything really, there's no promises, there's no point...there's no good, there's no bad in this dirty little joint...No dope smoking, no beer sold after 12 o'clock, Rosedale, Mississippi, Magic City Juke Joint...Mr Johnson sings in a corner by the bar, sold his soul to the devil so he could play guitar. I always like seeing places I've never seen if I've heard mentioned in a song that I like.

(2nd posting of this comment) Wow! You drove right by where I used to live in Gunnison, right by what's left of one of the 2 schools that used to be there that I went to. In Rosedale you were there at the high school I went to, by the small old church. You also passed the junior high I went to there on the other end of town. I used to work in Tunic on Tuesdays. I lived in Helena-West Helena for about 11 years. AND you drove very near where Conway Twitty's mother used to live in Helena-West Helena. BTW it seems you missed the West Helena side, the now best side of HWH. They used to be 2 separate towns. You were right to be careful there. It is reported that even the Sherriff got robbed there years ago. If you go back you can visit Friar's Point, MS one of Conway's other home towns. There is or was a Conway museum there. I think he still has kin folk there too.

Thank you so much for sharing!! I'm definitely going to have to go back to see some Conway Twitty history for my mom!! I'm glad there were so many areas that you could relate to! I've read about the crime rate in that area and am glad I was in and out in the morning! lol...thanks again for checking out my videos!

@@along-the-way Conway's mom's house doesn't have a marker or anything. The way I remember you go down the street that runs between Walmart and Exxon off 49 going east?, not exactly sure. I get turned around. Go down about 3/4 of a mile or more and they'll be a church on your right and her yard/house will be in front of, sort of to the right of you at a stop sign. It's the one with the magnolia tree that was bent over or something and grew like 3 tress out of 1. I don't remember the street names. All of this may be gone by now. Thanks for your reply and videos. God bless!

That's a nice-looking town! It's very clean! Doesn't look like any tornadoes have hit it. I'd gladly live there if they'd have me and there was a way of making a living. What I looked up says that more than 40% of the population is under the so-called poverty level, wouldn't know it to look at the place. I think we're being lied to about a lot of things!
