In October of 2016 a series of life events led me to the decision to abandon the modern-day paradigm and live my life to the fullest through travel and adventures. I quickly set off for the Grand Canyon from my home state of Kansas. Since that time, I've traveled to 48 states to National Parks, scenic byways, abandoned places, flea markets, thrift stores, garage sales, antique stores & roadside attractions. I have lots of video of places I've been & have decided to share them on my channel. Most of the videos are unedited, but I'm learning to edit as I go along.
As I grow older, my desire to see more of the world grows. This includes people, places, things, the forgotten and the soon-to-be forgotten. Life is a journey that we are all on. This vlog highlights some things "Along the Way" of my personal journey, adventures & experiences.
Join me as I explore interesting places & things around the United States....and whatever else I may encounter...Along the Way.

Very nice, informative video. Others have Cairo videos but each person brings their own perspectives to a place. I liked yours. Too bad about "D's Chicken" being closed. I was going to treat you to lunch there, then drop you off at Dollar General to shop while I waited across the road at the Carnegie Library to read about Alexander County history...(just joking....). So you got "bad vibrations" in Cairo? Yes, history is all gray, a mixture of progress and regression when it comes to human interactions. I too have received bad vibrations from places. The important thing is you were willing to explore even places where you felt uncomfortable. Strange the psychohistorical perspectives of a place like Cairo. Millionaires Row and (once) low income housing projects just down the road. Cairo, Ill. is like a mirror of the U.S. in many ways: black, white, and mainly gray...
Where I was born & raised. Sure do miss the Parkersburg area.
I grew up in Uniontown and drove down that road countless times. Very fun to see it in a video
That's awesome! Im so glad you enjoyed the video! That's quite the busy road. I almost felt like I was on a roller coaster! I can see why they need the runaway! lol Thank you so much for sharing and watching my video!
Did you drive through shinnston when you were out that way I can tell from my point of view back in the sixtys and sevenths it was as close to Mayberry as you could get
@rickhissen1904 I like Mayberry! 😊 I drove 19 South from Monogah to Jane Lew. I have a few videos left to post of Monogah, Worthington, Shinnston, Clarksburg, West Milford, and Jane Lew. I will try to get Shinnston posted in the next few days. I really enjoyed driving that scenic road and seeing all the small towns. I didn't get to spend as much time as I would have liked, though! I've noticed there's a lot of forgotten history along that route. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information online about these small towns. Thank you, Rick, for commenting and helping us all remember these beautiful West Virginia small towns! 😊
Your very welcome at first I thought your video was made buy someone who lived there but then I saw all the places you been I hoping someone from out there will see video and comment also we moved out to VA in1969 and when I started driving in early70s i would drive out via rt 50 and visit on weekends
I've never been over that bridge but I have traveled from VA where I live to go to shinnston over rt 64 I have an uncle and aunt who still live in shinnston in the sixtys I also had grandparents who lived on Monroe St in shinnston
Great Video 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoy the videos! 😊
The guess who had quite a few hits back in the day. Still good vibes today
They do have so many good songs! Thank you for sharing and watching my video!
We own all of the old houses in the downtown Salt lick area. We are renovating them and bringing them back to life! Thanks for sharing this video! Glad to see other find joy in these old homes like we do!
Salt Lick is such a neat historic town! Those old houses you own are beautiful! I noticed work being done on the old brick one on the corner that day. I'm so glad to hear that you're restoring them all! That is so awesome!! 😊 It's an honor to have you comment on my video! Thank you so much for watching and sharing!
Nice Homes. 👍🏻👍🏻
the streets are brick!! old, love it! In Pampa, Texas, Texas Panhandle, the main streets downtown are brick, and there was a story that gave the name of the man who laid the brick. He was a Native American i believe it said. My daughter and granddaughter lived in Parkersburg with her husband and his parents. Then they moved to another town close to it, can't remember the name, seems like Mineral something. You drove by the big Episcopal church, ithey were Episcopal. I wonder if they went to it.
@vernareed2692 I love the old brick roads! They look so much nicer. Parkersburg is such a beautiful historic town! It must of been nice to live there. Thank you for sharing and watching my video!
Nice Bridge!!👍🏻👍🏻
@SoniaIbarra-n1e I really like this bridge too! 😊 The Walmart at the West Virginia side is convenient, too
Wow very Beautiful and Huge Mansions.👍🏻 Is there Still People Living in there?🤔🤔
@SoniaIbarra-n1e I think most of the houses are private residences. I believe the Standard Oil Company house is empty, but it needs a lot of costly customized work. There are so many spectacular homes to gawk at! 😊
Wow very Beautiful.
@SoniaIbarra-n1e It is definitely a head turner! 😊
That house is AMAZING ❤❤❤
Isn't it!! It's a dream house! 💜😊
It’s such a beautiful house, it was kept in amazing condition:)
I think so too! The entire historic district is so grand. This is definitely one of my favorites. I'm quite fond of the Standard Oil Company house too.
Yeah it really does suck to see so much of the beauty of cairo gone to waste I've only heard of its heyday from my grandma and it's downfall from my mom who lived there in the 80's or 90's
I would have loved to see it during its good old days! The Queen Anne Victorian library, grand post office, and historic custom house alone tell us times weren't always so hard. It would be nice to hear the good stories from your grandma. Thank you so much for sharing and watching my video!
I thought it was a casino for a split second
I can see that! Those neat old neon lights give it a casino feel. Thanks for commenting and watching!
Farewell to Family video 😢
We are definitely in a new era! Goodbye Family Video!
Yup it’s Cairo you wanna move there.
I wouldn't mind living in Riverlore or Magnolia Manor
Who see the ford bronco
What a magnificent little town! The shots of the river and the old bridges! It looks like a movie set from the late 1800s! You have found some magnificent architectural treasures --- especially the Chancellor-Burwell-Lowes House! I noticed the Dogwoods, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, and Crape Myrtle planted around it. It must be a photographer's dream in spring when they are all in full bloom! I really enjoyed the tour IMMENSELY! Thanks for a really GREAT upload!
It really is such a beautiful historic town! I didn't have much time, so I kind of ran through there. I'm definitely going back to Parkersburg. There were so many architectural beauties that I couldn't decide on my favorite. But the Chancellor-Burwell-Lowe House stole my cake! 😊 I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate the grand historic houses like I do! Thank you for sharing and watching!
@@along-the-way Stole my heart too! It is the WOW! house! Really wonderful video --- thank you for sharing!
The iga building is actually pretty old
Afterwards, I read that the grocery store opened in 1959 and closed in 2020. It's sad to me when I see old stores close because of competition with stores like Dollar General. Thank you for sharing and watching my video!
Im sick of foreign wars bring Trump back
Yeah i was just there a couple days ago with my great grandparents who live in kansas and i live in missouri but i was trying to show my grandma the ugliest tractor and the one i was looking for is in fact in this video it is the huge wheel one at 1:16
🤣 Hey! I like those big tractor wheels! There is no such thing as an ugly tractor at Harold Warps Pioneer Village! lol 😊 I hope you all had a fantastic visit at one of the greatest museums in the United States! Thanks for sharing and watching my video! 😊
Love how hes standing there in his stately bearing. Such a dignified gentlemen
@justhereforagoodtime88 he sure is! He's such a good Rooster! 😊
It used to be a beautiful town.... until gambling joint took over and destroyed the family and friends financially. Also the place has a real bad flood zone every time a bad storm fills up the nearby rivers.
It seems like a lot of hard times have hit the once beautiful town! There are still a few beautiful structures left, and there are several buildings listed as landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places I enjoyed seeing. I didn't know about the gambling problems. Thank you for sharing and watching my video!
That's a little scary👕💨🥺
I think so too! 😨 Thanks for commenting and checking out the video!
Love a neighborhood with brick roads! Great classic song --- one of my favorites!
I like the look of the old brick roads too! I like the Elvis version of the song too. It's a good one! 😊
That's a house I would love to live in! Thanks for the upload
I would love to look inside! I read that they were thinking about making it a Bed and Breakfast, but I'm not sure what business would be like in Cairo. It's a beautiful house for sure! 😊
Hello and first time Watching your videos.🙂 Beautiful Church and Homes, especially the $245,000 home. 👍🏻
Thank you for stopping by! It is a beautiful old town! The older buildings seem to be built to withstand time and turn heads at the same time! 😊 I thought that price was reasonable for a spot on "Millionaire's Row". There are so many nice houses in Cairo! Thanks again for sharing and watching!
The guy standing outside the house in the video at 2:22 is also my uncle (mom’s brother) i called him after watching this😂
That's so awesome!! I actually remember your uncle! I was thinking they must be wondering what I was doing driving around in circles in their town! Lol...the second time I passed, I think we waved at each other when he was leaning on the truck! That is a really neat old historic church that was there too! I hope it's still standing. Do you know if the building at 7:46 is a church or house? I think it looks like it's Victorian Era architecture, and I really liked it. I haven't seen another one like it. Thank you so much for sharing and watching! 😊
I was actually raised here from ages 1-13 & previously moved in 2019 back to my birthplace of Fredericksburg Va
My dad’s favorite song you people made me cry, because my father has passed!!!😢😢😢😢😢
@@DeborahWallace-fb9yf I'm so sorry for your loss!
T rex scrote face mcnugger Thats the bad name I gave him.
I went to that school we were going to the gypsy school but something happened to it so they sent us to the hepzibah school there was also a place called sislers down to the left of the school buy the road that had real good hotdogs this was in the sixtys
Oh wow! That's neat to know! The school really stands out when you're coming around the corner! It's a nice old building! Thank you so much for sharing and watching!
I think they were selling that old school for something like 85 thousand earlier this year
@rickhissen1904 that doesn't sound too bad! The upkeep might be expensive though? Maybe it would be a good place for a flea market?
My dad was in the army overseas my mom and us kids lived in one of those duplexes buy the big open space also my grandparents lived on what is called third st now walter and edith hissen this was back in the early sixtys it looked a lot nicer then
It seems like it must have been a nice, tight-knit community. When I was looking online, I didn't find a lot of information about the mines in the area. I did find one article where a gentleman said he remembered there being a WWII camp there in Gypsy. I was just wondering if you might have heard that, too? I noticed that specific information on several of the mining towns in that area is not so easy to find online. Thank you so much for commenting and watching my video!
When you took that left at red car to the right down that road was a company store the old mine was north of that they turned that store into a nightclub in the 70s
Not even roosters escape the gaslighting!😂😂😂
Mean roosters become fried chicken at a young age, gentle roosters become ground chicken at an old age.
I especially dig your stream of consciousness narrations as in Beauty Ky (the land is beautiful not sure about the people 😁) mentioning stray road dogs, garage sales back in the hollers, your elation at seeing a (groan, not another one) Dollar General and long extinct “hamburger joints.” I too have streams of consciousness when I travel…
I do get all over the place sometimes! LOL..I travel alone a lot so I talk to the camera as my friend. It somehow keeps the fear away. Focusing on saving stray dogs and the world from the sneaky Dollar General takeover makes me feel purposeful. 🤣 Now I'm shining the flashlight on American food favorites. It thrills me that you notice! Speaking of stray dogs, I have never seen so many running wild and free as I did in Eastern Kentucky! I made it home without bringing one home, though! It's a steady stream of consciousness! 😊
I love SE Kansas and I've never even been there. It"s because I love "off the beaten path" history. You're the only person on YT I've seen to have visited the (once) site of Esperanza (Urbana). And Galesburg is just a few miles north of the notorious Bender Hills of Labette County. The book "Hells Half- Acre" (Susan Jonusas) is a great read. And your mining towns of (Tri-State Mining Dist.) Armas and Arcadia KS videos are really nice as well.
That's the best comment ever! Thank you so much!! I've been doing this for a while because I noticed there is so much not recorded. Why not turn the camera on while I'm curiously exploring. So much American history has just been thrown to the wind. I wanted to make some kind of dent in keeping something, and reading your comment makes me realize that's happening. Thank you for that! I'm getting a little better at the videos too! LOL...I have Cherryvale, KS on my list. I've been holding off because I wanted to hit the museum there at the same time, and they are rarely open. I have been to Parsons, which is close, and I have a short video of that town. I'm still hoping to get to Girard again for the Little Blue Books house. So much ground to cover! Southeast Kansas is quite historic and much of it is on the verge of the forgotten. Picher, OK and Treece, KS was part of the Tri-state mining company too, and I have a video of them. They are extinct mining towns that happened to be the number one producer of lead and zinc in World War I and World War II. Southwest Missouri was a part of it too. I have videos of Oronogo, MO, Purcell, MO, Alba, MO and Webb City, MO. They were all mining towns close or part of the Tri-state Mining Company. I have more to do, and hopefully my videos will get better "Along The Way" 😊. Thank you again for the kind words, I find them encouraging!
I wish the entire country was like this.
West Virginia is such a beautiful state! I for sure wouldn't mind if the whole country looked like this, too! 😊
Mean roosters are for eating
CHAPPELL ROAN TOWN
They are also alarm clocks
They sure are! Even when you don't want them to be! lol
