This video is a time capsule and brings back a lot of good memories. I lived in SoCal for years but in the '80s moved back east for family reasons. Little did I know I wouldn't set foot there again for 18 years, from 1988 until 2006. It was weird returning to a place I hadn't seen since the '80s. So many things changed in that time, but a lot didn't. For example, the mountains and foothills never change, but there was noticeably less smog in the' 00s than in the '70s and '80s. There was popular SoCal bumper sticker in the '70s that said "Never trust air you can't see".

One reason why Simple Minds works so perfectly for the soundtrack of LA freeways is because their heavy use of stadium reverb. The sound perfectly echoes off the mountains and tall buildings, giving you a feeling of being in the center of everything.

I went to Mexico City in Summer 85, Return of the Living Dead came out in Summer 85, New Wave Music was still going strong, Madonna's first tour was in Summer 1985....I totally missed the Punk Rock Era (American and British) I didn't even know it existed, because of the Disco Era which overlapped the Punk Rock Era at the time, and because I lived in a small town in Texas with only 2 radio stations (top 40 and country) in the mid to late 70's which I'm enjoying now, and loving it!!.....Good times back then.

I miss the feel of the 80's. I miss the old cars that were everywhere as everyday drivers. Yes I was a kid so I have a skewed view of the 80's...but it was still a great time. Thanks for uploading this. A program called cash for clunkers was what removed most "old" cars off the roads in the late 90's i think. The government offered around 2k-3k for them. Most people made the mistake of getting rid of them. I also think most people kept their cars longer back then and lots of people bought used.

  • @662wc5

Actually, the opposite is true. In 1985 a 15 - 20 year old car would have been a late '60s model, and that would have been almost unheard of as a daily driver back east and only slightly less rare here in SoCal. A daily driver from the late '60s wouldn't have been unheard of on the roads around LA back in the '80s, but they were exactly common either. Watch this video and see how many late '60s or older cars you can pick out. I saw a few in the video but not many. Most of the "old" cars in this video are early '70s models, which was less than 15 years old. On the other hand, here in 2018 a 15 - 20 year vehicle would be a 1998 - 2003 model, and there are tons of them still on the roads here in SoCal and even in Midwest and NE salt and snow country. I lived in SoCal in the '80s and now, have been driving since the '70s and owned used cars as old as '69 and new ones since '79, and trust me, cars since the '90s in general are much more reliable and long lasting than those from the '80s and before. Also, Cash for Clunkers program in 2009 did not even apply to "most old cars", it had very specific eligibility criteria that the majority of older vehicles (and their owners) could not meet. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_Allowance_Rebate_System

Thedude 404 over 360 to be precise, so that is close to 100% (double almost) it's terrifying.. the Chinese and Indians have a huge problem with overpopulation which is causing these resource issues, as well as spread of disease from India, due to very poor living conditions.. child birth should be prohibited there at this point, because mathematically the 50% has now almost doubled into a 100% in a shorter span of time which will than double to 200% within even a shorter period of time..

Was born and raised on L.A. freeways, and while it's been over 30 years since I lived there, watching this it's like I never left. Some of my worst commutes were in 1985 when I was stationed onboard the USS Norton Sound. I quite often commuted from the LB Naval Shipyard to Port Hueneme and back on a daily basis, and the traffic on the San Diego and Ventura Fwys was so bad I could get home faster taking PCH through Malibu and Zuma Beach. I do pine for the L.A. of the 60s/early 70s that I grew up in, because what they've done to my native state since then is nothing short of criminal. If not for the insanity taking place there now I'd move back in an L.A. minute.

I used to wonder if they were late to work , a meeting or coming home. I used to wonder if they were having a good or bad day, and what their goals were at the time. I also wondered if any of them were my family or friends or if I would meet them one day. Now that I watch these videos I often wonder all these things. Once in a while when I’m driving I think what if someone is recording me while driving and will someone wonder these things about me one day!

Wow. I just left LA because I hated the congestion.....what a cool video. If only LA were still like that now. It's crazy to see that drive through DTLA on the 110 and the ramp to the 101 with no traffic. These days, the ONLY TIME it's clear like that is at 3AM.
