Sadly it driving like that I see all to often here in Wales....all the fuss leaden footed clowns like him make about our 20mph speed limit when it covers just 30% of roads....the other 70% are unchanged...and honestly some of the streets that come under the 20mph limit are so tight you can't even do 20 comfortably

I can't remember where it was, but there was a town somewhere along the A5 where it was still 30 or 40mph inside the town with tight roads, heavy traffic and close pedestrians and pass the school. The outside though, was reduced to 20mph on a wide, open, fast section. This is why people ignore the 20mph speed limit. Because it is absolutely stupid and makes zero sense. I can go 30mph near a school but only 20mph on a wide open lane wide enough to fit 2 cars on each side, with nothing near us? It's completely backwards. It has nothing to do with driver safety and everything to do with catching people out for speeding, and controlling people to force them to cycle instead of drive.

It's a TLP Self Drive van. If the company is supplied with the date, time and location (Even without the registration number), TLP could well tell who was driving the van, as most hire companies now have trackers on their vehicles.

At around 2:10, you were right Ashley. I did enjoy the "Reverse of Shame" from the Audi. Even better seeing all the other drivers work together to make the errant Audi reverse even further. Have to wonder what the Audi driver was thinking to even contemplate pulling off that manoeuvre.

Years ago before I owned a dash cam, I was in traffic along a road when the driver behind pulled out to pass everyone, assuming they were going to turn right at the lights 1/2 mile up the road Unfortunately for them they met a bus coming the other way and they did the reverse of shame to an audience of appreciative drivers. They turned into a different road to divert which meant all they needed to do in the first place was a turn in the road and on their way 🤷🏻‍♂️

At around 8:40 with the beeping BMW. This is exactly the situation I was commenting about in the corner cutting video the other day. Namely that when you are diligent enough to make a right turn properly by slowing down and not cutting the corner, it can generate an angry reaction from a following driver, just as we see (and hear) in this video.

Not exactly the fastest, but not too slow either. Plus they are a learner. Who knows, they could have only been riding for a few days/weeks. We're talking seconds of a delay. At around 5:40, a learning point from this is that if you have the sun behind you in your mirrors, although you yourself can see very well ahead of you, vehicles coming the other way are going to be dazzled by the sun. And regarding the main point of that clip, yes that was a lethal overtake.

@@kenbrown2808 Ah yes the repeater lights, including the set mounted high up over the roadway on the far side of the intersection as well as another set (or two) by the side of the road. This can be useful if you are approaching an intersection with a large vehicle in front of you. Though that's also a good reason to stay well back from such vehicles.

@@kenbrown2808 Ah yes, just before returning to the UK I did notice the Vancouver and Seattle TV weather reports showing their 5 day forecasts and warmer weather.

I'm a mobility scooter user and drivers very rarely stop at zebra crossings for me. If I'm using my Class 3 on the road it generates a lot of anger and close overtakes at stupidly inappropriate times. I get that it's frustrating that I max out at 8 mph but it's literally nothing on your journey to wait 20 seconds and overtake at a safe point.

I bet a lot of the time the reason you're riding your mobility scooter on the road is because of inconsiderate drivers parking their vehicles on the paths.

My rule of thumb for passing a bike is "am I able to get mostly into the other lane?" If not then don't pass. Had someone beep me the other day then they went for a pass only to bail after they saw the bike.

same, I try to leave a full car space between me and the cyclist and make sure theres plenty of room infront. And even then, i gauge if its even worth it. Traffic light or my turning up ahead etc. The amount of times I've refused to overtake one based on these parameters only to be overtook myself and break checked is sparse but amusing that its happened more than twice.

Hi Ashley, As a cyclist with a toddler on the back, I choose to cycle on the pavement where there are no cycle lanes (not many in my area and none of them join up. Thankfully the journey I do has a cycle path most of the way) Im beginning to think it would be safer to drive a car for the 20 minute journey instead (my child loves the bike) People are too eager to overtake the cyclist in slow traffic, and do so dangerously. I won’t sit behind the exhaust for obvious reasons so that clearly tells the driver behind to overtake me and try to fit in the gap 🤯 Also overtaking at 10-30mph is always too close and defiantly not 1.5m although I do get the rare care overtake by using 100% of the oncoming lane. We need more police it’s a fact, a dedicated team to actually catch and teach those drivers who couldn’t care enough to educate themselves or get them off the road for good! Some people have so really bad habits and would probably fight you if you told them they were even a fraction wrong.

I guess you would keep quite rarther than shout stop cliff. The beep is to say I'm coming get out of here. Move it. People do deal with danger differently. Some run and some freeze. They froze and I suspect they would still freeze with no beep

@@Cous1nJackIt sometimes can, I've been in situations in the past where another driver warranted a good beeping and they slammed their brakes on in a panic due to it. I now never use the horn unless absolutely necessary.

Very informative video as always. I learned so much by watching all of these clips through the years. Thanks a lot Ashley. The clip at 5:47 with the blind-summit overtake, I remember you had a clip that had a full collision in a similar situation. That clip stayed with me. Ever since I've seen that clip, I treat blind summits with great, great caution. The car pulling out in front of the lorry at 7:49 was heart-stopping. People don't realize how difficult it is to slow/stop such a massive heavy vehicle when it's travelling at high speeds (physics classes should rally be taken more seriously in schools). Kudos to the lorry driver for having managed to slow/stop the lorry safely in the short distance he had available to him.

There was an anecdote in the "Death on the Streets" book by Robert Davis (free on rdrf website) A motor cyclist wanted to see how to reduce the number of cars pulling out on him at junctions. The 1st week he used headlights, but there was no change. The 2nd week he added a hi-vis vest, but there was no change. The 3rd week he had nobody pull out on him at all! That week he wore his full police uniform. ;-)

At around 6:18 with the driver of the red car turning left without looking left. Very common and classic mistake. These are also the kinds of drivers that get impatient when behind you and you yourself take the time to look left and spot an obstruction to your left that the driver behind can't see...and then wonder why you aren't proceeding to emerge left.

"That the driver behind can't see" - perfect example this morning, but turning right out of a T. Guy behind feels I've been waiting too long, pulls alongside fully on wrong side of road, waits for me to move then cuts across diagonally to get in front. There was a huge blind area to my left due to parked vehicles and I'd seen a car enter that section. I held back to preserve as much visibility as possible and saw that no other vehicle had followed, but the 5 seconds or so to ensure a safe emerge were 5 seconds too long.

@@christopherl1864 I've actually had similar happen from a white van man. In my case I was waiting to come out of a one way street at a T junction and positioned correctly over on the right hand side of the one way side street in order to leave the left hand portion free for those turning left. White van man took this as an opportunity to use that left side to turn right and beat me to the right turn onto the new two way street. Personally, it would never even enter my mind to carry out such a manouvre unless the vehicle in front had very obviously broken down. It really boggles the mind.

@@ibs5080 Totally selfish behaviour and in your case very likely blocked your view preventing you from emerging until he'd gone. I'd bet good money that you hold back when turning at a wide T so you don't block the view of the driver already waiting to make their turn the other way :)

When on foot recently I've nearly been taken out twice on the same zebra crossing. It seems that many drivers simply do not, or cannot (or maybe simply don't want to), read the road ahead, and approach a pedestrian crossing (or indeed any type of junction) with due care. So the example shown in this compilation is, sadly, part of a growing inability to drive correctly for conditions and surroundings. Thanks for sharing these clips, Ashley, as your work helps to increase awareness of the issues on our roads and educate at least a few tens of thousands of motorists.

Since I've started taking my toddler to nursery I've noticed how bad people are at stopping at crossings, even pelican crossings. He's nearly been hit twice by bikes running a red light, and cars and buses regularly block the crossing making it more dangerous for us.

I musn't lie, that Audi clip was satifying to watch, so much for impatience. 6:22 this one really grinds my gears! Honking for what?! The cyclist not cutting off the oncoming car. I swear some road users don't seem to pay attention to anything other than what's in their lane! When I cycle these are usually the most dangerous points, some drivers see the arm come up and they HAVE to overtake.

Unless there is a turning bay, I seldom pause in the lane for a left turn as the person did here. Especially if I hear a vehicle behind me. I'll pull over to the right and wait till both lanes are clear. It is actually what you are meant to do driving a car on a two-way road with single lanes on either side here in NZ, but I seldom see people do so. I've had cars cross over the centre line and drive past me in the situation shown, which is quite scary when you are looking the other way and about to go! Mind you, I have also had people castigate me for 'sitting in the middle of the road' when I was waiting in the turning bay for a clear point to turn. Some drivers just don't like cyclists.

Here in Surrey, the police routinely use a bicycle (a Brompton) in rush-hour traffic. For them, it is like shooting fish in a barrel to catch phone-users, spotting bald tyres, lack of seatbelts and sniffing out cannabis. Drivers complain that cyclists are invisible (because they are not shaped like cars) and the police use the stealth capabilities of a bike to their advantage. Even when they are fully hi-vized, wearing a helmet and riding within the rules, people simply don't see a cyclist filming them while they are using their phone. And the best bit is they can repeat the process the next day and catch just as many people.

The sheer lack of patience with many drivers these days is baffling.

In the highway code you must stop at a zebra crossing as padestrians have priority. As a padestrian perspective. I have encountered this many times. Thanks Ashley for another video! 😊

People can somehow drive into trucks, trees, and houses. It's no surprise some don't see cyclists. I can pick out a sparrow while driving, but I am still very aware I have eyes with built-in blind spots, a brain that literally fakes continuous vision (saccadic masking) and a field of view that is quite limited, not to mention poor night vision, difficulty in remaining constantly alert and focused, especially on repetitive, well known routes, and that's just the start of the list of human fallibilities! It's a miracle more people aren't killed on the roads.

@@AJPemberton I know about the flaws of human vision. And indeed cyclist can in some circumstances be pretty much invisible due to it. And as a hoop to jump in, wearing a high-vis jacket is an easy one. And as you pointed out, if the observation of a driver is such as it can erase object from the vision, even a high-vis jacket is a flimsy protection. But the keyword here is "complain". People who complain consider cyclist at fault for their failing to observe. But even if the failing is biological in nature it is still their failure. The same thing happen for wearing helmets, people who complain about cyclist without helmet really consider that because they weren't wearing a helmet it is their fault for being injured by a car.

I actually agree that no one should be dressed all black, and ride black bicycle. I myself had a cyclist accident with another cyclist. It was like 10-15 km/h for him, and I was barely moving, coming in from of the car who stupidly stopped to let me turn right (this is in London, so left-side traffic). It felt like the cyclist came out of nowhere. He was wearing black and dar grey, his bike black, and he himself was black. It's hard to see that type of things against tarmac in far away. And next to it, he was blocked by car, and the whole situation was so stupid anyway, because I really didn't want to turn before the car, but it stopped so weirdly in order to let me pass in front that I felt like it was my only choice, thus not having a view, and myself hidden from view. My own bicycle is grey, but my t-shirt is not, and my helmet is white. I also recently ordered a motorcycle. One of my concerns was not to get a black or grey one. Yes, motorcycles do have lights, but colour matters too. I say the same thing about cars. Especially in UK where daylight running lights are not mandatory. Grey, black vehicles on a very quick scan of the road is noticed much later than other colours or cars with lights. P.S. situation like in the video gives plenty of time to notice. But in real life we just quickly scan crossings before going, and that's where the colours matter.

Absolute nightmare the 40 ton HGV having a mindless moron pull out on him. Reinforces my thoughts that for driving lessons and every so many years drivers/riders should attend half day course of issues every driver/rider encounters. I drive HGV/ car/ bus/ motorbike/ horse/ pushbikes and understand all views relating

If there is one thing my instructor told me was that if you ever pull into a fast road and slightly misjudge the gap, you put your foot down and build up your speed. Not slow down. I did this on my lessons one time as we were waiting ages and i saw a gap i thought was good, i took it but the van was rocketing up behind us from the distance. My instructor blocked my hand from changing into 3rd and was like "foot down, more revs, give it some umph.......now change to 3rd". It was the same time i learned about later gear changes for power.

4:58 Was another time to be in primary. I tend to observe my 6 whenever there is oncoming traffic that might cause an issue with traffic behind. If (at a given situation) you don't want someone overtaking with oncoming traffic because you judge it isn't safe then take positive control by making a safe move to primary.

This YT vid shows what can happen when you do this (Yd5qBwVkxro). It stops a close pass, but can result in illegal horn use and a dangerous driver trying to knock you off. Still better than the close pass though.

Oh wow. I do tend to cycle using 'defensive' cycling techniques, Yes some people get upset but it's much safer. Interesting video.

At around 1:15, I have to say, the back end of that Renault Mégane has to be one of the worst looking designs. Though I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

That last clip is exactly why my dog had a harness! I just had to lift using the harness holder and he would have to walk on his back legs instead of being stupid or defiant

I initially thought the dog might be a stray (I know from experience that some French cities have an issue with stray dogs) but yes, it appears it's the owner.

7:53, this a common thing with OAP drivers, as an older person one of the 1st things that you loose is your ability to assess the speed of oncoming traffic and judge the distances involved, You see a gap and think it’s safe to pull out to when it’s not. [it’s also a problem with timid and nervous inexperienced drivers as well]

Yeh I wonder about their emotional state after the horn. The fact they stopped instead of accelerating made me think they must be old.

One driver nearly crashed into the back of me complaining I was parked with my brake lights on at night on a side street, he said you should have your lights off if you're parked🙃

You know, the rule with overtaking cyclists, you might as well treat cyclists as if it is a car (just slower) and overtake it as if it is as big as a car. It is, after all, a road user. Also, are motorcyclists the whole width of the lane since it is a motor vehicle? It would be interesting to know when it is appropriate to lane split. I still prefer to over take motorbikes as if I'm overtaking cars. Easier on my mental psyche.

I like your comments about imagining if it was a police officer on the bike or motorbike. Often I find there is a culture (noticed in the UK a lot but I am sure not just here!) of "if nobody is watching, it isn't wrong". In other words, it doesn't seem to matter to certain folk what they do as long as they aren't caught. Speeding is a good example of this - I will often be doing 70mph on a motorway and be overtaken with ease by cars doing 80-90mph. I wonder if the world would be a better place if we considered others and actually stuck to the rules.

1:26 is Queens Retail Park in Stafford, and you’d be amazed at how many drivers just blast over that crossing, especially coming from the direction of the bike, as pedestrians are in a bit of a blind spot, so I always slow right down to a near stop to double check!!

In the 1970’s my dad drove around a bend in a country road and ran over a dog asleep in the road, he stopped and the dog limped to the only house in the area next to the bend, my dad knocked the door and the owner of the dog came out and said, “it is the dog’s own fault, it keeps lying and sleeping in the road because the tarmac gets warm in the sun” [The dog was ok, a bit battered and bruised but ok] 2 weeks later my dad drove down the same road and there was the dog again asleep on the road 🙄🤦‍♂️.

At around 4:53 with the queueing impatience and driving with nearside wheels up on the pavement to get past right turning traffic. I recall some time ago seeing a similar video with a double decker bus doing the same manoeuvre, which was quite shocking.

The van overtaking (In the first clip) is a TLP Self Drive van, they're based in Smethwick. It could have turned into a head-on smash.

The only reason carbrains "can't see cyclists" is speeding. Drive 30kmh, and they're visible. If it pedestrians and cyclists had legal immunity to d@m@ge cars that drove dangerously close (within arm's reach) the carbrains would change their attitudes. That's why concrete protected cycling lanes change driver attitudes, the carbrains d@m@ge their own cars, with no one to blame but themselves.

At around 6:25 I could tell right away that this was from "the other side of the Atlantic" before Ashley mentioned it. It was the double yellow lines down the middle of the road that immediately gave it away. Can't tell if it's my beloved Canada or the USA though. A speed limit sign would have given it away. Kph for Canada and mph for the USA.

Anything can blend into the background at any time buses coaches cement trucks its not just pedestrians cyclists and motorbikes it depends what the background is.

Interesting section regarding CarVertical and the seemingly pristine Mercedes that had been clocked. Or maybe the result of having to perform many so called "Reverse of Shame" like the white Audi! Seriously though, this was a good reminder that "clocking" is certainly something to watch out for and not always apparent from MOT history.

At around 7:35, not withstanding the fact that there wasn't enough room for the van driver to get past the cyclist, where did the van driver think they were going to go even if they did manage to get past? There was a queue of traffic right in front of the cyclist!

I think 7:50 is a good example of how the horn makes things worse. They've already pulled out by the time the horn is sounded and the use of the horn appears to confuse/scare the car driver, causing them to actually slow down and pull over rather than accelerate away, as I suspect they might otherwise have done if left unrepremanded. The only way I could see the horn being useful in this instance is if it was used the moment the car started to pull forward. I don't think anyone's reaction to a horn is to accelerate away, which was realistically the only solution left, let alone someone who clearly wasn't paying proper attention.

At 0:58 I'd have been lookiing to get into primary before going through that zebra crossing having helped the red car past. There's no way there's also room for the Megane to get through also without turning hard after the island. I think this would have prevented the close pass.

Had similar thought on seeing that. No way I'd have left it that late to move out. It's one of these things you learn on the the bike when it happens to you , it shouldn't happen a second time as you should be more aware of it next time.

@4:40 The oncoming car driver had not seen your viewer's car because he was looking through the windscreen. This highlights the most dangerous 'safety' improvement in all modern vehicles; the thickness of the 'A' Pillar on both sides of the windscreen causing massive 'Blind Spots'. This video demonstrates this. As the driver of the car on the curve approaches he cannot see the videoing car unless he sees it out the side window, and as his vision was constrained by the picture frame effect of the thick ''A' Pillars and will only see the videoing car until he can see it through the windscreen once he is far enough round the curve.

4:18 Taxis (inc. Private Hire) must have a VCT document (Vehicle Compliance Testing), which is like an MOT, but far stricter. In a VCT it says "Check to ensure all windows are etched with the vehicle registration, VIN or chassis number", and it's unlikely the windows will all be replaced or etchings removed when a car is being sold. I think some leasing/hire companies also do this for security reasons, but don't have to by law.

7:50 That lorry sounding the horn caused half the problem. If the car pulled out then pulled away, the lorry would have more room and it would have caused him to brake less. Sounding the horn only frazzled the other driver into staying slow and even stopping, making the situation much worse. The horn should only be an "I don't think you've seen me, I'm here" signal, not a road rage "You tw@t" signal. "D" or "E" for the lorry. "F" for the car.

8:35 some car drivers don’t understand how slow you have to go at right turns if you’re on two wheels to not fall off, absolutely atrocious behaviour and attitude from that car driver.

If you look at the start of the video I tried to stay center of the lane prior to turning right. This also infuriates people. I have a number of videos of me being abused by folk who were carrying straight on. The issue for me is that if it made me jump I might fall off and damage my bike. Although I had ear buds in and barely noticed the beepy bmw.

I mean if you're pushing a pram over a crossing it might be a good idea to make sure the car's actually going to stop first?

I don't know how you define a beep in Britain, but in Denmark it literally means stop, there's danger. So whenever someone beeps at you, just stop. Wait and see what they do next.

No, they definitely would *not* beep at a police motorcyclist. They also wouldn't use their phones while driving if there was a police car in close proximity, which proves that they aren't suffering from some mythical "addiction" but are in full, conscious control of their (poor) decisions.

If the cyclist is keeping up with the flow of traffic why are some people so desperate to get past? I don't get it. Where are you going to go? It was mind numbing enough to watch that driver pull out in front of the lorry but to then brake on top of that? Very lucky to have no collision there. I think in a case like that you should be obligated to take an eye test shortly after. If you're missing huge vehicles like that how many cyclists and pedestrians are you missing?

At around 5:10, beautiful video pause to show the phone number on the offending white van carrying out the close pass. You'd think anyone driving a livered vehicle with contact details would drive in an exemplary manner. Especially even more so now days, with dash cams and social media around. Including the ability to leave online reviews.

I've always wondered this too. I don't condone leaving online reviews in the way you are implying (and I'm not saying that you do either!) but I agree, it seems foolish to drive in that way when your company name and contact details are plastered all over the side and back of your vehicle.

@@MartinParnham You are correct, I have never left a negative company review based on someone's bad driving. Though I have seen it happen as a result of bad driving on other YT channels whereby a viewer says in the comments that this is what they will do. I then check that companies reviews and sure enough, it's there. I recall in particular from Cycling Mikey's channel several of his viewers leaving negative reviews for different videos. One was for a particular London plumbing company.

@@ibs5080 I think it happened via Ashley's channel once. There was a van featured on his channel driving badly (can't recall the exact nature of it now) and the van had the company details on the side. The company got a load of criticism on review sites etc based on that.

@@MartinParnham I think I may remember that now actually. The other thing that I've read in comments is where someone has phoned the company in question to complain to the boss. In some cases, submitted their own dash cam footage (when it was their own incident) or indeed directed the boss to someone else's YT footage. With varying degrees of action / non-action.

As a BMW driver, I object to a Mini being called a BMW. I am very upset and will write to my MP immediately.

6:55 I was once going down a quiet single track country lane (about 2 mins from my holiday cottage destination) and I came across two female pheasants in the road. I slowed even more right down to not run them over and they proceeded to run in front of me so that all I could see was their heads peeping over the end of the bonnet, wiggling about as they were legging it to get away. It probably went on for 100 yards or so before they found a gap in the hedge they could dive through...

@@ibs5080 The vast majority of incidents in his videos don't involve Audis yet he still says "Always an Audi".

The cyclist in the clip from the States was fortunate. Having ridden a bicycle to work from time to time while living in New Jersey, I learned that cyclists and pedestrians on the road are invisible to American drivers. Motor vehicles take priority to all else; pedestrians are likely to be fined for jaywalking or arrested for vagrancy.
