When I were a lad (many years ago!), the local council turned a much-abused rat run into a one-way street for the safety of its residents, and for parents heading to the nearby infants school (Yes, they used to walk to school back then!!). It didn't solve anything as, for about a month afterwards, rat runners just started reversed down the road. So there were just as many vehicles as ever, they were just going backlwards. The road was, if anything, even more dangerous than before. Then, over a month or two, the Police started turning up mob-handed at random and proceeded to nab every driver they could, one after another - fish in a barrel springs to mind. They explained to every driver that it didn't matter what direction the car was _facing,_ it was the direction that the vehicle was _travelling_ that counted. I've no idea how many were actually prosecuted (this was before fixed penalty tickets were introduced). But reversing cars rarely happened again from then on.
At around 5:50 with the SUV overtaking you: All that risk by overtaking at such close quarters (close to you as well as the oncoming traffic) just to get to the next set of red lights a few seconds sooner...and not even in the same lane as you! @7.33 is the junction that my missus got potted by a Merc' private hire Taxi. She was travelling in the same direction as yourself, but in the nearside lane. A high sided vehicle was in the outside lane and wanted to turn right into the small junction where the Taxi was waiting to cross the dual carriageway. Whether he 'flashed' the taxi to come out to make the manoeuvre easier, or the Taxi just went for it we'll never know. Her car was a total right off and she still suffers from injuries caused. And all this to save a few seconds .....
That last clip with the cyclist and the white Audi. Looks like the Audi driver made a few more errors too: 1. Cut the roundabout arc by veering into the right hand "lane". Yes, I know it's not actually marked as two lanes but clearly wide enough for two cars side by side if everyone is keeping a correct line 2. Audi didn't indicate left to leave the roundabout 3. I sense the Audi was caught by surprise at the fact you were (correctly) stopping at the crossing to let the pedestrian cross just as you came off the roundabout. I feel this is a common issue here in the UK: Drivers just not expecting to have to give way to pedestrians either as they exit a roundabout or making a right or left turn off a main road into a minor road. 4. As you mentioned, Audi driver was a "bit of a pusher" when it was time to set off again.

People in the comments here are discussing having conversations on a mobile 'phone in comparison to talking to a passenger. The regular passengers in my car know to stop talking to me when I'm at a junction, doing a manoeuvre, joining a motorway, and suchlike. How many of your passengers are considerate of their drivers, and hold off from distracting them? If it's a good idea not to talk to a bus driver when xe is driving, surely it is a good idea not to distract a car driver too? Maybe you have some thoughts on educating passengers.

As usual, I had to inch forward, checking left and right. A BMW EV approached from my left, indicating right. Despite having priority, he stopped to allow me out, thus making his right turn much easier. Pity I forgot to save it on my dashcam. It would have been a good addition for your next "nice driving" video. Hazards are completely not an intelligible signal nowadays. I saw a video of someone crashing into the back of a motorway queue because they thought a van putting on hazards in front of them was saying "thank you" after being let in. He was actually about to break sharply because of stationary traffic. Parking with hazards, cars sometimes only see one side of the vehicle and it looks like they are signalling to pull out. If you are parking on the left, using a left signal is more helpful IMO. Hazards should be for hazards, for example when broken down in an awkward place. Nowadays, you cannot be sure what they mean, if you see hazards on you just have to be prepared for a worst case scenario...

My prescription for that island would be a segregated cycleway all the way round it, continuing from segregated cycleways along the roads. The most important place is around the island as that is where the conflict is. The space to come from making the island itself smaller, make the zebras into Toucan Crossings, and perhaps trimming the width of the carriageway around the island. Indicating before looking was surely the error. Incidentally, I don't think that Ford Focus was so much pushing in as found itself in the wrong lane. It was noticeable that it hung back a little signalling and fell in behind the vehicle to it's left on both occasions. I bet if it was an Audi driver, then it wouldn't have done that. To me then, the creature of habit observation still applies. Maybe he's not bullying but it's worth noting that he'd had to push in to correct his lane once and that it's likely he'll do it again. You're right, maybe they didn't know where they were going instead of being malicious. But that still says to me that they 1) don't know where they're going and aren't reading road signs effectively, and 2) that they're likely to push in when they realise they're in the wrong lane. I'm not above sneakily changing lanes if there is a giant gap in traffic, but in traffic like this I'd be going around the roundabout again or taking a different exit to turn around rather than pushing in like this, so it's still fair to say that people who do that are likely to keep doing that.

Later on, I also can't see an issue...looked like a simple lane mistake. Perhaps he has some previous behaviour we can't see that is giving off a cutting in vibe? Just looked like the guy was lost to me, and the lane markings weren't helping lol. "Taxi driver as well" - OF course it is, made me chuckle.
I’ve been sat at a bus stop with my left indicator on a van driver pulled up within inches of my back bumper. Unfortunately it was a timing point so i had a few minutes to wait after about 30 seconds I could hear him beeping! He reversed then stopped next to me shouting at me I should be using my hazards? I said I’m not broken down all I needed was a left indicator to be told I needed to learn how to drive! I said I wasn’t the one reversing because they failed to plan ahead and there’s no need to use my park where i like lights! He was absolutely furious 😂
I usually warn my pupils that if a van or lorry is putting their hazard lights on, they're probably going to block the road at a 45 degree angle before reversing (or trying to reverse*) into somewhere, but don't expect them to make it in one go. One my pupils said that they were driving with a parent when a lorry was blocking a road, and nearly took out an impatient Audi. * The other month we had a lorry trying to get into a building site, but there was a huge pile of coiled hose and various other items blocking the poor driver's manouevre. In the end we turned round and went a different way, as did several other vehicles, both before and after us.
It amazes how many drivers don't seem to realise that using their phone whilst driving is prohibited. Surprisingly taxi drivers seem to be regular culprits, of the 4 taxis I've used the past week, only one did not use his phone.

If it's really legal to turn from that lane (which the video sadly doesn't show [edit:] @JdeBP Ah, it's in the rear view.) then the dashed lane markings on the ramp that only appear at 4:29 do not make it clear enough that it's a 2-lane stretch of road. I can just see someone taking the middle (or even right) of the "single lane" there and being sideswiped by someone to their right.

I was driving back from London during the week and seen a Tesla driver, on his phone not touching the wheel and not looking at the road I was so shocked 😮 absolutely mental. It’s crazy I’m always on my phone it’s barely out of my hands, but as soon as I get in a car I don’t touch it until I arrive where ever I’m going.
1:50 I've just seen a taxi driver parked in with the back of their car barely past the pedestrian crossing on Old Hall Street between the tesco and sainsburys. Completely blocking a lane of the road and not far from a tight junction. All so he could text someone (whilst his engine was running) I wish I'd had my phone to take a photo it was that bad

I remember before they made it clear that it was only legal to use your mobile phone in an actual valid parking place, people used to slam the brakes on, hit the left indicator or hazards and when you finally got a break in traffic to get round them, they were nattering away on the phone. Last time I had to use the phone to send a text, I waited 2 minutes until I was on a residential street, pulled over, handbrake and engine off, then sent the text. I used the phone, but while stationary I could have used the touch screen in the car.

I'm no angel though. I recall several times taking my phone out of my back pocket, checking if there ARE messages (ie, just by looking at the lockscreen) and then tossing it on the passenger seat. That is more as an effect that my car handsfree software for checking messages downloads the whole mailbox each time. I have over 1000 messages in there, so it takes about 3 minutes to open. That and my phone has a profile enabled when I turn the car on which mutes all notifications, except those delivered via handsfree.

If you want a similar profile, on Android I use "Tasker", you can set configuration in response to states or events. States like "Bluetooth connected" and "Wifi near" are great for setting profiles based on where you are. The "In car" profile, detects the handsfree bluetooth connection, mutes all notifications (including vibrate) and runs Spotify so it's ready should I use BT audio and doesn't mess up. Those changes are undone when the car connection ends. Similar changes happen when it sees the guest Wifi in work, muting for example. In reverse I use the detection of my mobile phone on the home Wifi to set the heating thermostats.

One thing's for certain: doesn't matter where you live in the UK, there are some absolute liabilities driving on our roads. How they passed their tests/haven't killed someone makes you wonder.
Lots of Paddington Bear stares in this one, Ash ;)
Narrow roads in UK seem to be very frustrating. People randomly pulling over with half the lane still occupied! And then a two lane road suddenly comes into single lane without any warnings and bus stop in the middle of that only lane 5:40 !! It would be just too much for me
5:00 to be honest we all drive a bit like this when we don't know where we are going... use of indicators would have been nice, though!
Any views on timed bus lanes Ashley? I've upset a few people because I can read the sign and nip up the inside of a long queue of traffic. What speed should I be doing? Well I do more or less the same speed as a bus using the bus lane. It can't be illegal for me if it's not illegal for a bus (or taxi). Always observant of course especially when it comes to the end of the bus lane. Ex bus driver too but we didn't have them back in my day.

No, Swindon is not quite as bad a Liverpool for red light jumpers! We have our fair share though and where there are 4 lanes to your right at lights I always watch like Hawkeye for the red light jumper... Some cyclists are really bad as well, as demonstrated by the larger than life chap in this clip. Great video as usual.
I’ve spent a week driving round Suffolk and a week around Worcester and Great Malvern. The difference between them has been quite striking. Suffolk is much more sane and considerate. So not everywhere is bad. I suspect the police in Suffolk have more road traffic units than West Mercia. The key factor in making everyone drive better is being the person who drives well, plans well and forgives. It does spread and influence others.
Just a comment on the final clip, I have had more issues with delivery drivers on bikes than anything since I've been on the road. The amount that jump lights, turn into traffic on junctions and just overall have terrible awareness of their surrounding. It's just terrifying.

50 years in the future, most major city centres will be closed to private cars. Self-driving shared public cars will deliver people around the city centre from public transport to public transport, to the shops, office whatever. When you get to your destination, the car drives off to serve someone else. Your access to the vehicles and the services it will provide would be subscription based. Any vandalism or mal-play in the vehicle is obviously linked to your subscription and CCTV. I'd imagine as you came out of the main Liverpool town centre station you'd have a line of these as "instant available", in a similar way to taxi ranks today. For other pickups, it would, of course, just be an app and the closet free one comes to you. This way, the only people who need to be trained to mix with self driving cars are professional drivers... and probably cyclists. Not sure who I feel more sorry for, the cyclists or the self driving car programmers.
The cyclist at the end…or more specifically, the white Audi that pulled up quick behind. Any driver would predict that to be a problem. Why aren’t you moving!? They are saying. I can definitely see that happening down here too.

Sad to say, I did know that was a one-way street...and I've never driven in the area; but it's featured in a few of your videos LOL. I guess the van driver felt [incorrectly] that it was OK to reverse all the way down as his vehicle *was* facing the right direction. At 5:30 I do feel that some of the fault is IMHO poor road design. I fail to see the point of having two lanes entering the junction but only one lane exiting.
@The_Tactical_Taco
Жыл бұрын
Where I live there are a lot of these kinds of things. Usually the street actually goes from 1 lane to 2 lanes right before the junction and you have to merge back into 1 lane almost immediately after. I have never understood this design. Maybe you can get more cars through in the same amount of time, but either the number of cars is so low that the extra lane does not matter, or there are going to be so many cars that the merging will create a jam that will block the other traffic.
@ditch3827
Жыл бұрын
@@The_Tactical_Taco(and Frank) Yes you are right; the design increases the capacity of the junction as two cars can enter the junction at the same time. The gap between cars increases with speed so by the time they get to the other side there should be sufficient gap to merge, provided both drivers understand the concept of 'merge in turn'. So with this design the capacity of the junction is increased by 100% while the road width only had to increase by 50%.
Why did that Ford focus estate not just go round the roundabout again? It's so much easier and safer than pushing in

I wouldn’t recommend chastising drivers for using mobile phones while driving. You’re lucky they took it well, there’s a lot of people who wouldn’t and you are putting yourself in danger and also many of your viewers if they decide to copy your policing of the roads! Remember you’re not everyone’s teacher, just those in your car. Concern yourself with your own business and the police will deal with the law breakers.
2:54 It's manoeuvre with simultaneous signal, if you can be bothered to signal, then check your mirrors after someone honks. Everyone knows that.
I hate it when people pull out to the right when they turn left. There's no need, the road is built wide enough so you can turn left without hitting anything, don't swing out suddenly 🤦🏻♂️
7:63 Nearly got a bonnet ornament. 😁
Why do people have to take more room when turning into a side road? I just don’t get it. This driver took part of the road for on coming traffic, causing a motorist to have to use the horn. What a stupid person. Same sort of thing when drivers cut the corner at a junction. Why? I cant believe just how much of the oncoming lane on a junction is taken by these people, and when you use the horn they look at you, and jester towards you like it was your fault. Im surprised there are not more accidents on our roads today.

@@brianfunt2619 I know they're not warning lights, don't be so literal, perhaps wrong choice of words. But the principle stands that you use indicator to show your intentions, since you simply cannot see who's coming from beyond your field of vision, meaning you do not have 360 view all at once, and beyond barriers from which anyone could turn up at any moment, just as you're performing your maneuver, it's better to caution on the safe side and indicate. Indicating isn't going to kill anyone, not doing it is very likely to kill someone.

I get your point, but if no one’s coming, why indicate in first place? Also, indicating should not cause any confusion or panic, it should cause panic if I pull out blindly. Ok, I after thinking about this for a while, I think I got the general idea. It’s very important to do your observations first to position your car on the road and your surroundings. Check for potential dangers around you, like people crossing the street, other cars near you and what other drivers are doing, etc. If that’s the case, then yes, observations before indicating are required and should be done at all times. But, after that, indicating should come before a second mirror check to pull out. Once again, the sooner you communicate your intentions, the better.
