    Always try to pull out from under it before picking up the landing gear. While the trailer breaks are locked.

  • @daveshack298
    @daveshack29810 ай бұрын

    Pro Tip - Actually TWO tips! 1) When dropping a trailer: run the landing gear down until the pads are about 1" from the ground, pull the pin, remove air and electric lines, dump the air bags, and ease out from under the trailer. If you DON'T have a suspension dump, run the landing gear down until the pads just touch the ground and ease out from under the trailer. It's MUCH easier on you, ESPECIALLY if the trailer is loaded, to have the tractor take the weight off of the gear before you crank the landing gear up! It will also provide a 'feel' when you back back under the trailer and reduces the chances of a 'high-hook.' 2) After you slide under a trailer and hear that 'click,' put your transmission back into a low forward gear and tug against the trailer. If it is a bad hook (when you hooked up to your trailer, there was a visible gap between the 5th wheel and the trailer floor. If that gap is big enough, it may result in a false-hook, or even a high-hook) when you tug against the trailer you WILL know if you have a good hook! After you connect the air lines and electrical cord, grab a flash light and aim it into the jaws on the 5th wheel. You should see a 'drawbar,' running from left to right that captures the trailer king-pin. ALSO, when you're sure you have a good hook, notice where the release handle is in relation to the the 5th wheel. For example: on the truck I drive now, if I have a good hook, the release handle is tight to the 5th wheel. On the previous generation of trucks that I drove (different 5th wheel manufacturer) the handle was roughly one inch away from the 5th wheel. The LAST thing you do, before you take off, is another tug test! Release the tractor brakes, select a low forward gear, and tug against the trailer. If the rig doesn't come apart there's a fair chance that you have a good hook. Then release the trailer brakes and (again in a low forward gear) roll ahead smartly and apply JUST the trailer brakes. At this point, if the wagon is still attached to your tractor, you're probably good to go!. When I started out in this industry (in 1990), it was drilled into our heads to follow this procedure, and to this day, I STILL (mostly) follow it! I have never lost a trailer on the highway. I HAVE dropped trailers, in our yard, doing trailer movement in and out of our docks. The reason I dropped the trailers? Because I didn't visually inspect the kingpin jaws (that were full of snow) and I didn't do the follow-on tug test! Let me tell you, it REALLY sucks to crank dollies high enough (on 30k loaded trailer) to slide the tractor back under! I recently switched from pulling a 53' box to a 48' pneumatic tank. The picture in the mirrors, between tank and the van, are COMPLETELY different. I recently high-hooked the tank, because I felt the trailer riding up (and over) the 5th wheel, and THOUGHT I heard the 'click.' Once I got out and LOOKED at my connection, I realized that I'd high-hooked...the kingpin was in FRONT of the 5th wheel! Fortunately, my tank empty weighs about 10,000lbs and it was easy enough to crank the landing gear high enough to clear the 5th wheel! Y'all may not have the same licensing requirements as I do, but I guarantee you: if you drop a loaded trailer on the road; and you kill a bus full of nuns that were 'on the way to feed the poor,' SOMEBODY is going to take you to court!!!

    Just a tip. When you pin to a trailer with a semi, you want the fifth wheel touching the plate before locking onto the pin. If you want to avoid losing the grease you just applied to the fifth wheel have the trailer at a proper height and dump the tractors bags, get under the plate of the trailer then re-air the tractor bags. As a Truck driver myself, I would never pin to a trailer that has a gap between the fifth wheel and apron, I would be paranoid to drop the trailer unexpectedly.

    Hey guys, I drove semi for almost 30 years. You need to pick up the trailer with the fifth wheel when you hook up. If the weight of the trailer isn't fully on the fifth wheel when you back into the hitch, it may not latch correctly, which you have already experienced apparently. This is very important so you don't loose your trailer while going down the road. Safety first my friends.

    Love watching your videos, so relaxing for me (I know you deal with a lot of stress)... look forward to every one, as does half the world! How about a video featuring Gage (sp?) a bit... I always like to see the folks behind the scenes, the support crew... just a thought.

    Laura, this is a Compliment to you and your Husband your both obviously generations of knowledge of Farming knowledge and I just Love the Passion and emotion you have for Farming. I think is slowly going to be Taken away by Government and Elites for alot of Different reasons I don’t want to get into. I work for a Brown Company that has Sleeper Teams and I did Sleeper Runs all over most the Country & got to see different Crops but Mainly a lot of Corn and soybean. Where I grew up we Grew Grass seed, Wheat, Hops, Xmas trees, Sugar Beet seed that was in Oregon and Weed my dad told me that my cousins were trying I don’t think it did so well? But I moved to California and they grow so Much. It would be Kool to maybe go to Tulare international Farm Ag Show and Possibly meet you guys there. Cuz your Farming Celebs. Good work.😊🤙✌️

    If you guys need to jump a big truck like that with your jump pack open the hood or crawl under and hook it strait to the positive and negative terminals on the starter. It works great.

    Laura. Just a bit of advice, even though you hear the Click when you hook up i would do what i used to do and give it a Tug Test with the truck then get out and crawl under the trailer and look at the jaws of the Fifth Wheel to make absolutely sure it is connected 😊

    Hey, low voltage start is very destructive to the STARTER.... Always maintain your batteries... corrosion and keeping them clean. Hey, install maintain disconnect on your battery box.... isolate the batteries.

    Getting 'er ready for the harvest. It coming and coming fast. Those Canada fires are throwing a lot of carbon gases into the atmosphere judging from how orange the sun is, but boy do the vegetation love it. Next thing maybe a tropical environment like in the distant past.

    Once you hook up you should always attempt to move forward in gear to verify your attached. Too many bad things can happen if not properly connected.

    Tech tip of the day. To grease the 5th wheel, squeeze out a full tube of grease on the 5th wheel plate, then flatten the cartridge to spread the grease around. Safety tip. If the handle on that pitchfork came off, we would have had a Laura ka-bob.
