Driving A OBS 2wd Truck In The SNOW - Tips To Stay Safe And Avoid Getting Stuck! 96 FORD F150
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I had some requests to revisit an old video I made and give some tips for driving a 2WD OBS Ford F150 in the winter / snow. I try to show some do's and don'ts of winter driving and how to avoid getting stuck, along with some helpful tips on winter driving in general. Plus of course I had to play around some too! Thanks for watching and I hope you consider subscribing to follow along with all my projects and adventures!

Thanks for making me feel not so bad for owning a 2WD truck. When everyone around always said BUY A 4X4

Glad I could help! I get crap all the time because that's all I have. It's really not that bad, and I'm not going mudding or anything crazy, so it's fine.
I have a 1997 OBS short box 4w drive. I live out west in the mountains . I got 10 bags 70 lbs each totals 700 lbs. Tires pressure lowered to 55 to 60 psi. Improves traction greatly. Life saving at times.

Totally agree! Weight in the right places and good tires / tire pressure can make all the difference (especially in the mountains)!
Tough to pass up some fun in the snow. LOL.

It actually doubled as a teaching moment for my oldest (she is 14) and has yet to drive on snow. That's why you can hear her in some of the clips. I was teaching her the right way to do the wrong things. Thanks for watching as always!!
Great advice! I just got my first truck, a 2W Ford Ranger and I'm gonna have to learn how to tame it this winter 😉

If you have trouble with going light enough on the throttle or find yourself going right from too little to spinning without getting anywhere you can use a higher gear. Everything will take longer but that's the whole point.
When i was stationed in Fort Carson. My dad let me use my grandpas old 1990 C1500 had some very respectable all season tires on it that actually worked very well in snow. Well everyone who lives or has lived in Colorado know that they dont start plowing the roads till no one can drive on them, they arrent allowed to use the blades when they plow, and wont re plow the roads after dropping dirt on the roads. So the roads will always suck and the State is forcing people to by AWD and 4x4 in order to drive in the winters. So in a very bad snow storm i went to Lowes and got a couple cinder blocks made its a lot easier on a heavy snowy day. If snow gets too bad you also got the chains you can use. Just a FYI i grew up in Mexico were everyone had RWD Trucks if you had a 4x4 its because you were rich and actually used it for off roading. Where we are from we had very muddy and flooded roads and my mud, its the kind of bud that takes off boots because the entire town was mostly thousand of acres of farm fields. If things got really bad then we used chains for the mud.

Thank you for your service! You are exactly right, 2wd CAN get around just fine with some common sense, and some careful driving. Thanks for watching!
Good tips. Narrower tires would provide even better traction, but it looks like you’re getting along just fine as is.

Thanks! Yeah narrower tires would help, but I liked the old school look of the rims and wanted to go overly aggressive for the tires. Thanks for checking out the video!

I thought that wider tires would be better especially if you air them down you would have better snow contact.
@EvanWells07

It depends on what you are driving through. If it's mostly snow, narrower tires work better. Ice and slick surfaces, a wider tire with more contact patch work well.

@notleksplayz2575 I either drive this or my Grand Marquis in the winter, you should be fine. A nice way to do it is to get a spare pair of wheels and mount up some snow tires or something with some traction, that way you can swap them on come winter (if you have all seasons on it now). I just leave my mud tires on year round.

They can be tricky at times, but you are right, it makes you a better driver.
I know it sounds dumb, but 4wd does help with braking because it mechanically links the front and rear axles. In a 2wd on snow and ice the front axle will always lock up before the front when braking because of brake biasing. In 4wd the wheels will lock up at the same time.
@EvanWells07

It doesn't sound dumb at all, an I'm sure does have some effect in certain 4x4s, but most modern stuff isn't locked like that just because it's in 4 wheel drive anymore. An older truck with full time 4wd or something with manual shifting 4wd sure.
@coltonwood9846
5 ай бұрын
Yep, in AWD systems with a center differential you don't get any braking advantage over 2wd. But most trucks and suvs with part time 4wd systems (with a transfer case) do mechanically "lock" the front and rear axles together, even if they are electronically controlled. To explain a little further, when you brake in 2wd and the fronts lock up first (because brake biasing, which is a whole different discussion), the rear wheels are still spinning so you're not getting maximum braking out of the rears. When in 4wd if the fronts lock up the rears have to as well because the transfer case makes the front and rear axles turn at the same speed. So you get maximum braking to both axles. If you had a braking system that could somehow distribute braking force based on each individual wheel's traction, 4wd wouldn't do anything for braking. ABS does this (sort of) but even the best ABS system is far from perfect.

At my old work all we had was Chevy trucks that were 2wd and we ran delivery routes with them. They got around fine with good tires alone. We would put 2-400 miles a day on them no matter the weather.
Does operating in lower gear & tow mode help to get going when stuck, or from a stop? The extra torque to the wheels. 2WD 2010 F150 here
@EvanWells07
6 ай бұрын
Not really. Shifting to low will just keep it from upshifting, which will cause a sudden increase in tire speed and can cause slip. The tow mode usually just shuts off overdrive or maybe crisps up the shifts some (I'm not 100% sure on the newer f150s). Usually being easy on the throttle will get you going, no sudden movement on or off. Those newer f150s don't seem to do quite as well from the ones I've driven at work, but with some weight in the bed and good tires it will do fine.
Will it do good with a hill that has snow and ice on it

Through out the video I am driving up and down snow and ice covered streets. Every vehicle has its limits though. I have got around great in this truck for years, be it in the ice and snow, or through the timber, and the occasional mud road. Finding the limits of your vehicle is good info to know so when things do come up you can make educated decisions on how or where to drive. Hope that helps!

Have good tires and extra weight in the bed. Manual trans can be good and bad depending on how used to it you are. You can really ease into it so you don't spin, and slip the clutch a little at times for better traction. You can also instantly break the tires loose if you aren't careful. Just take it easy and you should be fine!
Is that your favorite trick in the intro?

And yes four wheel drive does help with breaking any idiot will know that it keeps the tires from locking up and increases engine brake
@EvanWells07
Жыл бұрын
That doesn't make any sense. How does 4 wheel drive aid in either of those things in normal driving situations? ABS helps keep the wheels from locking up, not 4 wheel drive, and unless you are talking about a manual transmission or semi truck, engine braking is almost a non factor on vehicles.
