Can You Off Road a 2wd Truck?!

2WD OR 4WD - Get your build started at www.customoffsets.com
Fuller and his friends put two 2wd trucks up against a 4wd GX740 to see if you REALLY can off-road a 2wd. On one side, you've got a beat-up old work truck, and on the other - a fully built pre-runner. But does it even matter since they are both only 2wd?

You should do more functional tests like this, maybe do big wheels small tires vs big tire small wheel, or big lift vs stock etc.

My grandfather (never got the chance to meet him) used to bomb through mud bogs on the East Coast of Canada in his old 2WD Chevy. Also drove it in some pretty deep snow, with chains of course. I’ve also done it a couple times in my Ranger. 2WD can be lots of fun. Trucks are so much more than just the 4x4 system people think about.

@Sic Semper Tyrannis you're flat out wrong. I was able to take my 1st gen fwd lifted wide highlander with 265/70/16 bfg KM3s with traction control with 1 inch wheel spacers on 2nd gear on a rockyish gravel road going pretty steep uphill similar to that obstacle... If I lowered my tires down to 20psi. I'd go up the hill easily. I don't know how those guys cant make it up that rockyish obstacle uphill. 1. They didn't lower the tire pressure down trying that obstacle. 2 there too heavy body weight wise, 3. theres too much torque on the welded diff f150 prerunner, and the open diff 2500. Its open diff. The land cruiser Lexus version on the other has A trac which has traction control and its lighter than the 2 2wd trucks. Lighter vehicles make a big difference offroading... Traction control too.

Can vouch. 2017 f150 2WD with ko2s and a locking rear diff. Just got back from a winter in Montana and some off-roading to chicken corner via hurrah pass. It can be done for sure but you gotta be smart about it. And ALWAYS have a hand winch and some tow rope ready. For me 2wd cover 90 percent of trails I’d normally do. FWIW even in Montana a lot of guys wernt 4WD. Snow is snow and if you’re stuck deep it really doesn’t care how many wheels are spinning.

Only time I got it stuck was when the frame was in the mud in a pit that was basically quicksand. I was 3/4 of the way through too, but I slowed down like a dumbass. haha. 4wd toyota 4runner with locker had a really, really hard time pulling me out. I can't believe the places my truck will go.

I've owned 2 vehicles that had 4 wheel drive, but it didn't work for a period of time. First was my 92 s10 blazer. The 4x4 didn't seem to make that big of a difference because it had a limited slip rear diff and plenty of weight on the back. It was pretty good off-road and even when I fixed the 4 wheel drive, I seldom needed it because it would either do fine in 2wd, or 4wd wouldn't help. The second vehicle is a Toyota tundra, and it makes a lot more of a difference due to a lack of weight on the back, but honestly, decent tires make a bigger difference than 4x4 in my opinion, and if I load the tundra down with firewood or something, it's very good off-road without 4x4

Granny gear, the right axle ground clearance the right tires, a stout manual and a winch is all you need. Tires and the right axle matter more than anything. That's why old 2wd truck in Alaska backwoods got along fine with a good driver. Unless you're going where a Hummer can there isn't many places you can't go in a 2wd and the right tools. Now you may not be deep bogging or rock crawling but that's playing unless it's life or death.....

i came to this video with so much curiosity after visitng a mountainous village with technical uphill gravel roads, most of the vehicles are 2wd toyota kijang. i just question how were these vehicles able to make it up here for regular use? maybe it also depends on the skill i guess

What Radio do you have in your truck? I have the same truck without the radio mines an auto sadly, but big city better on auto my opinion. Looking on getting a bluetooh radio where I can just hook my phone and play it off that. what do you recommend?

My f150 is rear wheel drive and I put a locking diff in it and I've never had a problem off roading. Most 4x4 trucks are open diff and when youre in mud or snow only 2 wheels are spinning anyway.

That’s what I was thinking too the whole time that if I get a 2WD vehicle I could still take it off roading, just not too extreme like going on steep hills and deep waters! Thank you it means a lot! :)))

I did everything with my long travel tacoma in 2wd that I did in 4wd. Some places it took 13 tries though...shell reef doing a half hill climb and disappear and come back down the chutes .black mountain poway up the roads close to the glider path...devil's slide to the top numerous times up the spine . Almost made the drop off fish Creek when it was a drop off...before wannabe s stacked rocks. Competition hill..oldsmobile...I kept the transfer case..but yanked the front end ..before toyota offered a prerunner I built one with real shocks and locker and kept the transfer case .that's the secret ..low range. And you need. To air down unless your a race truck ..that is rolling resistance and grip .low range gears and air pressure. Long travel and a skilled driver.. I used to dune it with 31x10.5 on pizza cutters..the beige one back in the day at glamis .I used to glow stick my wheels so everyone could see my fronts weren't turning and the rear were..no one had that back then and I used to catch a lot of shit...cause I made stuff look hard ..then i would say I'm 2wd and people would argue with me till I walked them over and showed them i had no front differential..then it was DUDE this fucking guy climbed this hill or this fucking guy is out duning a 2wd.. Duning a 2wd on pizza cutters. Low range forward ..never low range reverse .... lol.. Pick your line before you come down the hill to go back up...you cannot get out of the throttle..so no traffic...made it hard at compe at night..so much traffic ..not any more ..not even allowed to be there. Assholes. I can remember people's faces when they were stuck and asked me for help and we yelled 2wd as we charged past them..2 liter of coke ..pour out 1 liter. .fill with Jack...no food needed for 8 hours or more ..lol...

There are TONS of legal options for trails across the state, but for the sake of keeping them open and in good shape, most people don't share the exact locations. Check out almost any forest service roads north of HWY 29 and there will be places for you to explore! Half the fun is finding these places!

It would be awesome if you have added a 2wd Ridgeline in the comparison. Would love to see how FWD vs RWD truck compare in the off-road. Also Ridgeline has more chances of conquering that first hill, if it will go backwards.

We have a 2D Desert Runner with lift and Mts , stock LSD rearend and wheel often. It does extremely well. We like to offer a challenge of if we get stuck I pay $ if you use 4WD you pay me. I'm ahead 😆. It really has a lot to do with the driver and set up. Most think that it's a floor it approach when its actually a balance between momentum and traction. Off course terrain is the big factor. If its dry and solid it will go if its wet and muddy or soft its a challenge. We have crossed 3ft water a few times on gravel riding the wave.

6:10 think you should off-road in Manuals more often. I’ve off-roader in both and found I have way more control with a manual. But i only own manuals and am used to it already .
