The brake test button verifies the bulb in that switch works, if that bulb comes on during driving (without being pressed) it means the brake fluid reservoir is low. The test button just exists so the bulb can be checked instead of finding out your brake system is leaking AND the warning bulb has burnt out.

My first car was a 95 1.3L rover mini and it was the most fun car ever having a wheel at each corner makes for the best handling I wish I'd never sold it 😅 one day I'll get another one , if you want to see how competitive these are check out some videos of 65 minis battling with 65 mustangs around the goodwood circuit it's unbelievable what great corning and super late braking can achieve even with 50hp 😂

The 'I don't know what this does' button is indeed a brake test button (lord knows what it actual tests). The bottom left of the dashboard (with the clip thing) seems to be an aftermarket addition. Usually the radio/CD is mounted down there.

The very first car I drove after passing my test back in 2004 was a late model (probably 99 or 00) Mini Cooper 1.3 MPI Sports pack which was owned by my sister's friend. I had passed my test in the afternoon and a couple of hours later he turned up at our house and let me drive it. It was such a blast. You only need 60hp when you only weigh 600kgs. What an absolute riot of a car. So characterful, rorty, and ready to take whatever you had to throw at it. I still wish I had one.

Watching this car makes me miss my 1980 Ford Fiesta Ghia. The 1.6 Kent engine, 4 speed transmission, and 12" rims made it a comfortable go-cart. That was as close as I ever got to driving a Mini. A coworker had a Mini back in the mid-70's. He was a little over 6 feet tall. He loved that car

If you are really going to get a Cooper, send it to Steveson Motor Co, I think they are located in Canada, but they do some amazing restorations and parts for them. And get some Swifttune parts for the engine! It is my dream to own one of these too!!

I think it’s time for you to test drive several different little British sports cars. Try a Triumph GT6, or an MGB. The Mini may still be the one you want, but you’ll never know until you try it. All the same quirks, but different and unique in their own way. You can always fuel inject the carbs later.

@@Francisd-gk6bw I mentioned the Gt6 because it’s a 2 liter inline 6 that gets 95-104hp stock. It’s about 1900 lbs, so it’s definitely plenty. I mean, I don’t ever want to drive on the highway, but the power is there if I need it.

The thing at 5:56 means nothing to me. Even the trim piece its mounted to looks unfamiliar from UK minis. It's the kind of naff trim that's probably added to cover up Air Con Gubbins. All JDM spec stuff I suspect.

My first car was a 1998 Rover Mini 1275i, just a base model :) This gives me so much nostalgia Mine was the MK7 so I got the luxuries of an Airbag and a TWO speed heater fan! Had it 2015 to 2019, it was the most reliable car I ever owned... until it rusted out :( This JDM Mini may well be on only 6000 miles!! Almost every MK6/MK7 Mini I've seen has had the 3rd gear synchromesh wear out and crunch whenever you change to it, but yours is completely silent! 4:32 Yeah the fuel gauges in these weren't the best, and seemed to go out of adjustment. The one in mine never worked, it just sat at 75% full all the time 4:49 I'd always have to hold off turning on the heater on mine even on frosty mornings so that it could properly heat up quicker heh Turning on the heater was also instrumental in keeping the car going when stopped in traffic, having the front mounted radiator, being stopped the temp would just creep up to worryingly high levels, but turning on the cabin heater to max to keep the engine cool. (And then the windscreen would fog up since there was a leak in the heater core) 5:04 Yeah it just closes the vents so no air comes in at all. This included the two eyeball vents at the side too on mine. UK minis didn't have those central air vents. 5:18 Not fancy, this is a necessity in the UK, or you aren't seeing out the back 99.9% of days 5:20 It's the brake system failure/low fluid warning light... only it's also on a switch to save costs by using the same moulding, and under the guise that it's a switch so you can test that the bulb still works, which is all that pressing that does. To the left of that is where the cigarette lighter normally would be, but this japanese model oddly has it moved over to that big trim thing below 5:33 British people can't help you here, we didn't have this big lower panel on our models at all, our dashboard were much slimmer, I guess this is where the secondary HVAC system lives on this JDM air conditioning model. - So you're probably right about it being for a japanese toll reader! 6:10 That's so cool to see, this little AC panel and those two square vents above it aren't on UK minis, instead we have a clock (which is radio controlled and automatically adjusts for daylight savings!) and on higher end models like the Mayfair or Cooper, you could get a oil pressure gauge and volt meter. Funny to see how it's a completely independent system, this whole AC was very shoehorned in it seems, I like it. 7:31 Can't be a european car without an ash tray :)

Curious why shifting at 5000? Been shifting my Cooper at 6000-6500, for over 25 years, and I have a heavier crank installed similar to the one in that ‘94. Might lose power at about 5300rpm, but then the next gear’s already in the power band.

50klicks is 30mph, 60 is 40 (sorta), 80 is 50, 100 is 60 and change, 120 is 75 or so. The funny thing is I grew up with mph, and limits changed to kmh but my brain is still wired for the former, and for other reasons I'm driving a UK import of a Japanese car, which has both measures, but the metric is much less prominent than the imperial so I just convert on the fly.

3:58 The STOP sign didn't even see it coming. 7:12 Ahhhh.. The nostalgia of an aftermarket deck. I fondly remember the one I had that was almost all screen, and had this gorgeous (at the time) video sequence loop. I was a Pioneer guy in spite of the fact that the removable faceplate tech in their heads would start to act sketchy after a year and a half. I also remember the day my brain said, "Hey.... USB. Do newer decks come with a USB interface?" (this was 2007 I think). Sure enough, I walked in to a Visions Electronics (which I do not do anymore - assholes) and they had them. That would be my last aftermarket deck. In 2013 I would buy a 2013 Accord Coupe V6 6MT. No need for an aftermarket deck at that point.
