Driverless cars creating traffic jams in San Francisco
In San Francisco, where two major companies are testing driverless taxis, some local officials are reporting that the vehicles have caused a number of issues, including rolling into fire scenes and running over hoses. NBC News’ Jake Ward reports.

It would be nice to see these test phases in rural parts of the US or even in other countries like Mexico or Vietnam where the traffic is so bad! Automobiles spend most of their time parked, taking up space, and costing working middle classes thousands of dollars for maintenance, fuel, DMV Fees, insurance, and collision repairs. As a truck driver i cant say i want to be on the road anywhere near those things. And sooner or later, with self driving trucks coming in the future i will definately not want to be on the roads. Tesla released the autopilot feature (level 2 autonomy) in 2015. Full self driving (level 3-4) in 2020 for early testing. Waymo is a level 5 system but only works in heavily controlled situations. These issues with stopped cars are because they are not flexible, unlike Tesla's system which works on any US road.
I’m on the fence because this technology has the potential to be really great. Unfortunately, along with any other invention that we now have, had to go through bumps in the roads and hiccups before it gets better.
The car just stops at blinking lights? So, it will stop in the middle of the train tracks when the gate lights start flashing? Omg...
the numbers on accidents are bias. Since the self driving cars only go at it's fastest maybe 45mph on local streets. They aren't allowed on freeways and higher speeds. So the fatality rate would be lower.

More dangerous than the 43,000 killed annually by humans?
I still think it's a dumb idea ! You pick out a sharp vehicle, and then you can't drive it yourself ...what fun is that ? ( Of course, it would be fun to see two driverless cars cussin' each other out for a parking space ! )
Pretty sure a firetruck could push any car out of the way.Stop the hand wringing, sounds wimpy.
They we’re supposed to be able to drive themselves in 2017 though 😂

Another thing trump ruined
The federal, state and/or city government need to take action to ensure that companies which own these cars are held responsible when they cause problems.
I'm currently in SF and I've seen numerous issues with these. I witnessed one Cruise vehicle pause at a red light and then run through the red very slowly, blocking out all cross traffic with the right of way. I saw another (also Cruise) sitting at a construction detour, clearly with "brain" in neutral mode. Waymos seem better, but they still make weird traffic decisions and are awful to get stuck behind. Say, for example, a MUNI bus signals and starts away from the curb and then thinks better of it. The Waymo will signal left, but stay behind the bus until it finally moves into the traffic lane. Annoying, because SF driving takes split second decision making. These 2 brands clearly don't seem up to the task. Hoping they don't come to my city.

Just because we can do something, does not mean we should

Lol if only you guys knew how far we really are from driverless cars 😂
These networked cars will exponentially learn about these situations faster than your teenager or aging grandparents. The City should concentrate on the out of control car break ins, robberies, homelessness and street racing.

For seniors would be better to have a non emergency Uber or Lift service with discounts . Not enough non emergency senior small buss transportation .
Simple just crash into the robot car and or manually remove them if you have to to give a point.

So when fire department is driving to a fire they now need a bulldozer to drive in front to push any blocking driverless car off the road?
Autonomous vehicles should not be used until all bugs are detected and fixed

I agree. And fire should not be used until we can guarantee control 100% of the time. And dogs shouldn’t live with humans until we can guarantee perfect training and control over all puppies. And airplanes should be banned until we are sure that there is no possibility of a crash. Oh and don’t even get me started on electricity!
Looks like cruise is experiencing the same issues as Waymo did few years back
1:48 No, robot driverless cars are NOT safer than an alert human. Comparing their safety record to overall annual US auto fatalities is misleading.

The Department of Transportation needs to ban autonomous vehicles on the streets. A.I. will never be able to drive better than an average human who have a fairly good driving skills. There are so many variables that's involved when driving.

San Francisco needs to penalize and charge Google Waymo every time the city(fire, police) needs to respond to these incidents.

This is a sensationalist story. The hiccups are not that prevalent. Every time I see one (which is generally 10-30x a day), I know that the technology that everyone will soon take for granted is still being developed here in the Bay Area. Not Florida or Texas.

Exactly, it really sounds like there's an agenda involved. I like that "911 calls have tripled" statistic but never mentioned if there's been a 3x increase in the vehicle fleet rolled out. And then there's the 10x vehicle fleet increase "increasing traffic," but once again, they don't give actual stats of how many vehicles that is, so it may just be sensationalist scaremongering
One of these cars almost hit me on Hayes street San Francisco
Yeah there is no other way to train these cars. There should be a person always on standby to control these cars remotely and authorities should be able to call a number in case of any troubles.
Cruise sucks , I’m an Uber driver and those cars constantly stop and will just freeze , I definitely see many issues with them in Austin TX
If anyone actually listened to criticism from rideshare drivers about the navigation systems they probably wouldn't have gone live with driverless vehicles yet.
These cars must be on Maryland mode
This really makes me feel uneasy and I don't know why.
