Driver's View... Pelion Mountain Train Milies - Ano Lechonia (Greece) - [395]

Enjoy the little train of Pelion that crosses the mythical routes of the Centaurs and the Dodecatheon as, according to the Ancient Greek Mythology, Pelion was the summer habitat of the twelve gods of Olympus.
Pelion Heritage Railway is a 600 mm (1 ft 11+5⁄8 in) narrow gauge railway line of the old Thessaly Railways in Greece, connecting the city of Volos with the town of Mileai (Milies) on mountain Pelion. It is widely known as Pelion Little Train (or trainaki / τραινάκι) a fine example of a typical Decauville public railway.
The line extended from Volos station through Volos city centre (as a tramway) to Agria (1892), reaching Ano Lechonia in 1896 (12 km) and Mileai / Milies (16km) in 1903 totalling 28 km of route length. The locals used to called it "Smokey" (mountzouris / μουτζούρης) or "Jason" the Fearsome" of the Argonauts.

    Although it was a toy train, the location was full on X-Rated adult. There were at least a few points where little children would say "Mommy can we go home now". No wonder Gods lived there. Thank you for taking us to the majestic place.

    Εξαιρετικό το βίντεο. Όμως πρέπει να τονιστεί ότι στα εικοσιπέντε χρόνια επαναλειτουργίας του τρένου δεν σημειώθηκε καμία πρόοδος με εξαίρεση την προμήθεια δύο ντιζελομηχανών που διαθέτουν εμφάνιση ατμομηχανής και εξηγούμαι: α. παραμένει εκτός το μισό της διαδρομής από τον σιδ/κό σταθμό του Βόλου έως τον σιδ/κό σταθμό των Άνω Λεχωνίων και έτσι ο επιβάτης χάνει το αστικό, το παραθαλάσσιο και το πεδινό τμήμα της διαδρομής. Μάλιστα ενώ το κομμάτι από Άναυρο έως Αγριά ήταν λειτουργικό φρόντισαν διάφορα "αόρατα πνεύματα" να βγει εκτός λειτουργίας. β. το τροχαίο υλικό είναι αρχαίο και φυσικά δεν μπορεί να υποστηρίξει πολλαπλά δρομολόγια σε μία ημέρα. Πολλές υπήρξαν οι υποσχέσεις για προμήθεια νέου τροχαίου υλικού, θα ήταν δυνατόν να στηριχθούν στο μετρικό τροχαίο υλικό ΜΑΝ1 / ΜΑΝ4 και κατ' αναλογίαν να κατασκευάσουν τροχαίο υλικό και για το πλάτος των 60 εκ. αλλά δυστυχώς μέχρι σήμερα τίποτα δεν έχει συμβεί. γ. επιδομή / αύξηση της ταχύτητας: το δίκτυο μπορεί να είναι ιστορικό, αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι πρέπει ακόμα να υπάρχει η σιδηροδρομική υποδομή των αρχών του 1900. Δυστυχώς όμως αυτό συμβαίνει στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του δικτύου με στρωτήρες και ράγες να παραμένουν οι ίδιες από κατασκευής! Όλη η επιδομή πρέπει να αντικατασταθεί με σύγχρονους τσιμεντένιους στρωτήρες και μόνο δευτερεύουσες γραμμές και μόρτες πρέπει να απαρτίζονται από τα καλύτερα των υλικών που πρόκειται να αντικατασταθούν. Επίσης πρέπει να αυξηθεί η ασφάλεια με κατασκευή περισσότερων κιγκλιδωμάτων, και τοποθέτηση ταυλών σε μικρά γεφυρώματα ώστε η διαδρομή να μπορεί να γίνεται και από πεζούς με ασφάλεια. δ. εξοπλισμός του δικτύου με σύγχρονα "εργαλεία": ηλεκτροκίνηση, σηματοδότηση, εξοπλισμός των διαβάσεων με ΑΣΙΔ και παρακολούθηση, ειδικά της ορεινής διαδρομής, με κάμερες είναι στοιχεία που πρέπει να εισέλθουν στους σχεδιασμούς του δικτύου. Είναι πολύ μεγάλο κρίμα η συγκεκριμένη γραμμή να έλκει τουρίστες και επισκέπτες από όλα τα μέρη του κόσμου και οι σιδ/κές εταιρίες στην Ελλάδα να δείχνουν τόση πολλή αδιαφορία...

    Sir, I have two questions for you: At the end of the line the loco shunts to join the train at the other end for the journey back. The triangular shunting was so unique ... at least I have never seen it before. Normally they just hook it up backward (which looks so ugly, ugh). My question is why is the 'turntable' not used (where the loco is turned around on a rotating disk). Used to be quite common, but I haven't seen it in a while. Second question: Were the vibrations so pronounced because it was really a Marine Diesel hiding under the steam engine mock up ? Thank you.

    I am confused about your first question. Do you mean why there isn't any turntable at Ano Lechonia? Locomotive was produced by Schoema www.schoema.de/en/locomotives/products/narrow-gauge-locomotives/

    "Turning wyes", as they are usually called in english, are quite common in many parts of the world as a cheap and simple alternative to turntables. Also they are more easy to keep operating in places that get much snow in winter, where turntables can literally freeze up. Their only drawback is that they require more space compared to a turntable. Another use case is in tram networks, where turntables cannot be easily installed in the street (and loops might use more space). There a wye can simply run into an intersecting street. Sometimes, to save space, the wye is even "folded in" to form a pentagram/5-point turn (e.g. in Mals station in South Tyrol/Italy). As for the fake steam engine look: yes, it's a simple Diesel loco in disguise. And it's awful.
