DRIVEN: Volkswagen ID.7. Has VW finally built a Tesla-beater? | Electrifying.com

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

#vwid7 #id7 #electriccars
Volkswagen’s all-electric ID. brand has come a long way in a very short space of time. The latest addition to the family, the ID.7, is the fifth all-electric ID model to be launched in Europe and the sixth worldwide. And with the sub £23k ID.2 supermini in the pipeline, the future for electrified Volkswagens looks bright.
The ID.7 sits at the top of Volkswagen’s ever-expanding range (although in terms of price it sits alongside the ID.Buzz), and is available in saloon form initially, with a Tourer estate to follow later this year. Although Volkswagen officially refers to the ID.7 as a saloon, it’s actually a large hatchback. As part of Volkswagen’s plan to gently ease buyers from ICE models to electric, it loosely fills the void that will appear in the brand’s range when the Passat saloon disappears from the line-up later this year (the new model will be estate-only).
The ID.7 will eventually come with two battery size options: the familiar 77kWh pack that appears across the existing range, and a new 86kWh pack that so far has only been offered in the ID.Buzz long-wheelbase. The smaller pack is available from launch with the larger one joining the line-up later this year. In terms of charging, the 77kWh pack peaks at 170kW on a DC charger, while the 86kWh pack can accept a charge speed of up to 200kW. Expect 10-80% charge times of around 25-35 minutes on a suitable DC charger.
Join Ginny as she puts the new Volkswagen ID.7 under the microscope for the first time. Has VW finally built a car to rival the Tesla Model 3? Let us know in the comments below.

The most efficient way to drive any car is to use the brakes (/regen in an electric car) as little as possible by anticipating what's happening ahead of you as much as possible. That's because when your electric car engages regen it's not converting all the kinetic energy to electrical energy, there are losses. There are occasions, like going down a hill where you have to slow down, where regen is great and recaptures energy that would otherwise be lost as heat via the brakes. Otherwise doing gradual acceleration and coasting as much as possible is the way to go.

I like this, and I like that it's not another infernal SUV. As a company car driver, this would be on my list ahead of the BYD Seal (brand equity is playing its part here) and the Tesla 3 or Y. I would favour the i4 over it though but I think if VW price this keenly in the lease market they could mop up the company car orders.

Good review, it'll be interesting to know how close it can get to its WLTP range. One thing i don't understand is the 1 pedal driving and regen argument.. Don't all EV's use regen braking when you press the brake, which varies depending on brake pressure until you get to emergency braking and about to stop where it will use the friction brakes? I know this is the case on my Kia, So no energy is wasted. I adjust the regen on the paddles to save me having to move my foot to the brake pedal but generally prefer regen level 1 or 0 on the motorway

Just ordered one. Fantastic car and driving comfort can't be compared with a model Y. About the re-gen option. In D mode indeed limited but if you change into B mode you almost have 1 pedal drive experience. If I am not mistaken you can als change the car settings in order to have "auto predictive re-gen". An excellent review. While you are an experienced EV driver, in the UK anyway, most buyers will of EVs in the next few years will be 'first timers', in my case, the first time (in over 40 years) of driving with two pedals. I think VW have considered this, they think people will need easing into 'one-pedal' driving, I'm sure we will get used to it, but VW don't want to frighten anyone. I know from other reviews that the ID range defaults to 80% charge, you have to manually change that on the screen if you want 100%, so surely the mileage VW quote should be based on an 80% charge? After all, I suspect many drivers will never alter the default figure.

But a lot of journalist compare this ID7 from a size and quality with EQE and i5. So go and see the car, drive it and make you conclusion if you want to buy an "expensive ID7 model Y" or a cheap ID7 model Eqe or i5). Drive comfort and luxury way ahead of a model Y. I SO wanted this car to be better than the earlier ‘shorts’ that I’ve seen so far… but I don’t think it’s looking anywhere near as efficient as it’s supposed to be. Plus VW hiked the UK launch price by £6k - just a few reasons why my earlier interest is now beginning to soften! But, I’ll reserve final judgement until I’ve seen some ‘proper’ road tests, maybe with someone who’s got the car for at least a couple of days (it must be damn frustrating to only have an hour, and try to do any kind of review!).

@@bullshitbingo2259 There are many dumb fanboys and many dumb hateboys, both equally obsessed and equally misinformed. You're teetering on being the latter. The "manufacturer in Italy" is, as I said, IDRA. Tesla designed the process and metallurgy. IDRA made the press itself, which was highly customised by Tesla. Casting isn't new, but casting at this scale is. Comparing them is like saying a Ford F150 Lightning is the same as a golf buggy. You are right that damage to the casting would be more difficult/expensive to repair than in a regular car. There is significant crash structure in front of and behind the castings. A unibody car that has crash damage that far into the car is an immediate write-off. Whereas the significantly higher rigidity of castings makes them safer for humans in a crash and decreases the likelihood of write-off with medium level impacts. The Infiniti Q50 still has a backup mechanical link between the steering column and the wheels. The Cybertruck is the first production vehicle with *no* mechanical link between the steering column and the wheels. "The vehicles are utter medicore" is a perfectly fine opinion, I suppose it depends on whether you're stepping up from an economy car or stepping down from a full luxury car. "Tesla is all buzzwords" is just hateboy nonsense. You're clearly obsessed with anti-Tesla social media.

I used to like SUVs and owned a VW Touareg and Audi Q7, but I like EVs now and understand their efficiency is significantly lower if they are heavy and bulky with high air resistance. My EV will not be an SUV for sure. I'm deciding between VW ID.7 and Model 3 Highland and ID.7 is definitely bigger (my family would fit there easily), better equipped and more luxurious and also has stalks. M3H is significantly cheaper, more nimble, faster and more efficient and the stalks can be retrofitted soon (Enh. Auto is working on it). Its app and entertainment is still better, but VW's is finally also very usable. It's a hard choice :(

  • @timmurphy5541

It doesn't sound like a hard choice at all. They're quite different cars and you wouldn't have the M3 on your list if you really cared a lot about fitting your family in. I'd prefer an ID.7 because no M3 would suit me or my family. In your case I think the M3 is what you want and you'll end up going for what you want.

Hi Ginny, nicely done in what was a short time with the car. I'm over 70 and my next car will be an SUV style - much, much easier for me to get in and out of! I do intend it will be an EV - I have a grandson to start with. I don't need ludicrous acceleration, I do want 300 miles + real range. I like the idea of Tesla Superchargers. I want a hatchback as well - yup, my aching back. I want good handling, and this will really please you - INDICATOR STALKS! Why? Well, it's down to the way I was taught to signal on roundabouts all those decades ago. There are two get outs though. There's a firm probably going to add bolt on stalks for Teslas and when using SatNav signalling should be automatic. Some clever visual processing would be needed to detect roundabouts and cancel the SatNav indicators if the driver choose to continue past the planned exit - or leave early. That facility could also go some way to support non-SatNav driving. SpaceX can land reusable rockets, it has to be possible! Cheers, keep up this really useful reporting.

If you ask the question of you would choose a ID7 over Tesla modelY or BYD. 100%. Tesla is tesla. Best infotainmentsystem and best charging-capabilities. Have issues though. BYD is not in the same league - can’t trust the chinease infotainmentsystem and 10% might plummit down to 0% in an instant. Same with the MG. Also just feels cheap. ID7 is, by far, the best car I’v driven. Could be better? A bit to long(no notice while handling, VW topclass, but in tight spaces). Voice-command is failure. Could be a bit more effecient in kW per distance. But better than alot of cars out there.

NIO ET5 charges with 180kW with a 90kWh net capacity battery, by the way. And even the stupid Cybertruck only charges with 250kW peak but rapidly falls to 200kW and below. And the Cybertruck has a 124kWh net battery capacity. The range of the ID.7 with the 86kWh battery should be around 650km (400 miles) WLTP or 560km (350 miles) of real world range.

BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi and VW, are all way overpriced for the masses. This ID.7 wont be different. Stellantis will take that sub €25k market with the Citroën ë-C3 and the Renault R5 E-Tech. This is a missed open goal. It looks great on the outside, but the patchy interior quality that has plagued VW recently still exists and while the software on the infotainment screen is better, the "tappy, tappy, slidey, slidey" temperature and ventilation controls, along with the touch sensitive steering wheel controls remain awful to use. The two main problems though are: price (starting around £55k) and the efficiency - the claimed range is a complete work of fiction. 2.8 miles per kwh is about the most achievable, which puts real world range at sub 300 miles. Simply not good enough.

People are complaining about the very decent interior of the ID.7 but so many are hyping any Tesla, or EVs like the Volvo EX30 for no reason at the same time. Doesn't make sense. Everyone who sat inside an ID.7 knows that the interior is great. Price is high but still reasonable if you compare it to the competition. Range is very decent, there are even many test videos out there which praise the efficiency. Highway consumption is like 19kWh/100km at 120km/h (75mph) average speed. The 86kWh net battery should be good for 560km mix use range (350 miles) and 450km pure highway driving in the real world. The smaller 77kWh battery, the same size which you can get in an ID3, is still good for 400km (250 miles) of pure highway driving.
