Tip. When assembling the 1/2" or 1/4" tubing to fittings, take a thermos filled with boiling hot water and soak 1-2" of the end of the tubing in the hot water for 10 seconds. Fittings will slide right in. Now for my question. Based on the mfgrs flow rate of 0.5 gal/hour for the brown 1/4" tubing with emitters every 6", how long on average, do you run the water? Seems like it would take a long time to get enough water down to the deep roots.

So I was much like you Brian when it came to drip irrigation, costly and to difficult were my thoughts. Then I found Mr. Landscaper irrigation at Lowe's. Very affordable and exceptionally easy especially with their video tutorials. I now have one for my front landscaping, another on the side of my house and a 4 line timer for the back yard that waters 2 landscaping beds, all pots and the garden. The timer is very easy to set and has made my gardening less stressful and everything looks fantastic. I had a neighbor walking past my house this week and she asked me who did my landscaping as she wanted to hire them to do her yard. When I told her I did it all she said it looked wonderful and professionally done. What a compliment!

Great video Brian! The terrible part for me, is I’ve had all the drip materials sitting in my garage for the last month. Every... and I mean “every” time I water, I think about the drip. You are very correct that about it being such a time saver. It just takes some effort (well, time) to put it in. Sooo worth it tho! I gotta say too - your video is far more informative, understandable, and to the point, than any other drip “how-to” video that I’ve seen. Thanks again!

Cant tell you how much i enjoy your program and young Noah is a natural. Have only taken up gardening since retirement and our move away from London, we have divided the garden with a wooden bridge front end with flowers and plants and back end with vegetables and fruit trees. I now have my Courgettes and Marrow growing quite happily up stakes, i am also still growing new seeds for this year as i now know my first frost date. Each morning i am out early to hose our produce but worry that my friends and neighbors will be needed when we go on holiday to continue watering, so to me drip irrigation sounds a God send. Keep educating this novice with gardening tips. Thanks.

With this pandemic and threat of food shortages, I planted not only the garden I was originally planning on having this year, but also a second one at the rear of our property. My only issue with that is getting back there to water. At the moment, I'm hauling 5-gallon jugs of water by hand, since that's easier than dragging my hose through a fence, my wife's hostas, and across my yard every time. I could run a buried drip irrigation line back there and really ramp up the efficiency of the back garden. Not to mention save my back!

I planted two gardens this year; one at my house and one at my mom's. I thought it'd be nice for my mom to go out and watch her garden grow...sprinkle a little water on it, and get some food from it. However, having just had her 96 birthday on august 12th, she has reached a time in her life where she no longer walks as well as she'd like and doesn't trust herself outside anymore. So, I've been watering at both places..and begging my brother and sister to go over every now and then a fill in for me. I've been thinking about setting up drip for her...it'll be an adventure! A timer would be the perfect addition!

Hi Brian. I noticed you didn’t mention the lack of industry standards around the sizing of the “1/2” inch tubing. At 8:39 in this video, for example, I see you trying to ram a black no-stripe tube into a blue ringed 90. I’d just like to point out to your viewers that while there isn’t an industry standard for exact sizing of this tubing, manufacturers do try to be reasonable about it. You should try to match the fittings color rings to hose with a stripe of the same color. In this example, a blue striped hose will slip more easily into a fitting with blue end rings. Common colors include blue, green, and brown striped hose and ringed fittings, and all black hose with all black fittings. Thanks for the great series. Loving every episode.

With adding new raised beds, plus the increasing drought conditions we are getting here in summer I know I need drip irrigation in my garden. I've been putting it off as when I check out suppliers here, it all seems so complicated to install. And yet you actually make it seem simple, so I'm re inspired. Another reason for wanting drip irrigation is so I can actually go camping in the summer without worrying whether my plants are dying - and so I will need a timer. As always I appreciate your great gardening support and education. Enjoyed the hens bopping around in their garden home.

I absolutely NEED to put together drip irrigation for my Houston Texas container garden that I have been working on since this last Mother's Day for my 76 yr old mother whom has alzheimers. My mother has little left of her old self, she can not remember HOW to can or garden but she remembers that she DID and I am trying to bring her some contentment in her last bit of life before she is gone from us completely. My gardening failures this year are crushing me, that I am not able to provide her the lush type of garden that she enjoyed in central Illinois before she had to come live with me here. I have lost the battle against the blight issues I have been hit with, since I have been using a sprinkler system. I really need to install a drip system ASAP and try for a fall harvest. I had an acre in El.Cajon, CA. Filled with thousands of flowers and fruit trees. And my son in law put in these Drip systems, saved so much water, my water bill was reduced. And my plants were beautiful, because I had A timer on each section, one for my FRUIT TRRES, one for my Suclents etc. Because they went on at a certain time and for a certain amount of minutes or hours. The plants or trees were so totally happy and I never had to worry about them being too dry, I also had bird baths added on my drip system, so the bird baths were kept filed, that made for very happy birds ! Thank you for you very good informative video !

I’ve used three kinds of drip in my gardens. PVC and drip tape on closely spaced row crops and the kind you showed for things farther apart. I put my tomatoes 5’ apart, peppers 2 1/2’ apart. So I used 2 gallon per hour emitters on most things, but for smaller potted things I use 1/2 gallon per hour. For some things I use one gallon per hour.

  • @bruceloder1948

    @bruceloder1948

    2 жыл бұрын

@@lindajwilson9848 it depends on how dry it is. In the summer I might set the timer for two hours and be suing 2 gph emitters. That means I’m giving each tomato plant 4 gallons of water over a slow, two hour time. A smaller potted plant might only need a half gallon of water so if you put on a half gallon per hour emitter, set the timer for one hour. It’s really simple.

Great video. My husband actually put some drip irrigation to my container tomatoes and a soaker hose in my small raised bed. He also bought the Orbit advanced timer but it has been nothing but trouble. When it worked it was so nice because I didn’t have to stand out in this 100 degree Houston heat and try to keep everything watered. It watered deeper and more consistently. But then, it stopped working only after two months. He set it up just like they suggested. This sounds like a great timer. So glad you shared this information. Blessings to you.🥰👩‍🌾🌻

Now about my garden: After a few years of experimenting with gardening in pots, I finally committed to my first raised garden this year. Unfortunately with COVID, my plans were pushed back into the summer. I finished mid-July (I live in Central Texas) and started with a summer garden, knowing that next year I'm going to get everything planted way earlier in the year. The first week after completion, we had temperatures around 105 degrees. I ran a water line from the house out to the garden, and I'm kicking myself for not going all-in with the drip irrigation. However, that is on the agenda for next year and should be a relatively easy add. I'll definitely come back to this video when that time comes.

We have ten garden beds plus lots of individual plantings. Watering takes almost an entire day. A drip system would free up so much time that could be spent on other chores and make gardening enjoyable once again.

The drip irrigation system would be so helpful for me. With the 90 plus temperatures here in South Carolina this past July and August I ended up being more soaked than the garden is by the time I water everything. I am such a beginner but I've been learning tons on your videos. I have to write everything down. My husband is amazed at my progress in the garden. Your wealth of information is amazing. Your presentation is perfect. You don't waste our time with what you have to share in your videos. You get to the point of your subject and don't make videos longer than they need to be. Thank you for everything you do for us. Signed: Misplaced California Girl :)

We have a lot about 30miles away from our home that we planted some fruit bearers and some herbs. We visit them between a month or three(except this pandemic which we haven't went there since December of last year) and some plants just don't survive as we just rely on the rainfall and water holding capacity of the ground soil. Drip irrigation will definitely help raise the survival rate of our plants and it will be a great sight to see them grow and soon to harvest when we visit again.

Adding a drip system on a timer will solve my inconsistent watering issue and my neighbors won't have to see me out watering in my robe in the mornings. :) I love your podcasts and have learned so much. I had a drip irrigation system in Colorado, but when we moved to SoCal, the landscaper/backyard builder talked us out of it. It wasn’t the only mistake they made. Although I find watering my plants a very zen activity, having a drip irrigation system would be helpful on hot days like the ones we are experiencing now.

I did it! I did it yesterday! Had to use a 16-gallon container and a water pump since there's no access to an outside faucet. The only thing I didn't know about was a pressure reducer, so I'm off to Home Depot or Ace--or wherever they have one--so that I can finally get my little system up and running. I am so excited about it! 😄

I've been using the drip system for many years and it's been dependable and basically maintenance free. One other advantage that drip systems has vs conventional ones, is that it saves lots of money for "watering costs" since it allows the water to be applied directly to plants with the drip system, instead of one large sprinkler, that's hard to get the water where it's needed. I have an irrigation system for my garden that my brother and I put in that is affective, works well but I’ve been trying to come up with an inexpensive system for my sister in-law. This looks like a great way to do this for her that is less expensive. My brother suddenly passed away 6/29/20 at 57 years old after complication from surgery. Thanks for the idea. Much less expensive than the over head sprinkler system and looks very simple yet affective.

I started gardening in Arizona. If you missed a watering by an hour your garden was tumbleweeds. Drip was a game changer, and I dialed it in over the years. I appreciate the simplicity of your approach. Certainly makes an easy improvement for those unfamiliar with drip irrigation. Over years of fine tuning, though, I might be able to offer a headache saver. Water pressure diminishes at the end of the 1/4” lines you describe in your set up. Then you’re stuck with uneven watering. UNLESS both ends of the 1/4” are plugged into a half inch. I can send a photo if that’s confusing or if anyone want to learn more. It makes a huge difference.

It's also a good to open that crimp on the large line and let it run for a bit to clean out the line. We do that once at the beginning of the season and any time things seem slow or plugged up. Great demo. Thanks!

I set up drip for the first time earlier this summer, using your first video on the subject ,Brian. This one has lots more detail, and answered a couple of questions I'd had when I was setting up. Two tips for others that I'd offer, based on "learning the hard way" : 1. Make sure that your 1/2" hose is the same brand/size if you have to connect two lengths. I made the mistake of buying 1/2" hose from two different stores, and they didn't match exactly - I had leakage at the joints. 2. It's a teeny bit easier (but still, like you said, it's the hardest part of the whole set up...) to join the connectors to the tubes, and the hoses to the faucet or another section of hose, if you place the ends in some very hot water first. It softens up the rubber enough to make the connection a little easier. Something I'm still trying to figure out is how to program my 4 station timer (pretty sure it is the same one you had in your first video, an Orbit) to have different watering "schedules". I have the stations programmed for time fine, and the timer goes from one station to the next automatically, but I wanted one to water daily, and the other only every other day. Perhaps you could address that as a follow up in your FAQ Friday? All in all though, I am SO glad I finally did it, for the exact reasons you mentioned. Thanks!

Living in Misery......I mean.....uummmmm.....Missouri....we get such CRAZY weather, it's hard to know what to do when! We've had back-to-back weeks of 90+ degrees (THANKFULLY no triple-digit heat this year so far!), pop-up thunderstorms that sometimes only rain for 10 minutes (literally!), sometimes 30 minutes, sometimes a few hours and sometimes off and on for days at a time with wind gusts that will pluck a chicken bare and occasionally drop hail the size of softballs! (Although, even pea sized hail can decimate a garden!) Last year, the Missouri River was above flood stage from March all the way through until mid-December!! However, where we are, half of the farm (100 acres) was soupy wet and the other half was bone dry! It still just absolutely amazes me how much the landscape can create such vast micro-climates! I've had to write down when we've had rain this year just so that I don't water too much at the wrong times. But, it's been extremely challenging! I've had tomatoes cracking from too much rain from storms and blossom end rot from a "predicted storm" not happening so I end up missing a watering. :( I also have Multiple Sclerosis, so I really have to watch how long I spend outside in the heat! I'm definitely going to have to look into that timer! Regardless of what watering system I talk my boyfriend into getting (since I only just convinced him to build raised beds at the end of spring!), having a timer that I could remotely turn on and off would be a HUGE advantage! :) Then, I just have to figure out what system will work best with our hard well water. :\
