DRIFTING Vintage RADIO SHACK 1985 AUDI

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I had a great evening "CRAWLING ON ALL FLOORS" with my 1985 Radio Shack Audi Quattro RC car! This restomod was a few years in the making, but I finally took the time to break it down and replace all of the electronics with modern gear; ESC, transmitter/receiver, servo, LED light kit, and LiPo battery.
This car has been with me since I was a wee lad! My brother gave it to me as a Christmas gift and I held on to it, because it was my first "close to hobby grade" RC car and it had working front lights! I mean, how cool was THAT in the '80s??? LOL Plus, I always liked the boxy German cars from that era. I'm sure many others would agree. Yes, there are a few scratches and scuffs, but what do you expect for a 35+ year old RC car?
I recently replaced my floors with LVP (luxury vinyl plank). They're synthetic and "luxury" is just a marketing term to make it sound fancy, but it's actually really cool and very durable. My main level included hardwoods in the foyer, travertine tile (dated) in the kitchen / breakfast / dining areas, and carpeting in the living and family rooms. We are blessed to have such a wonderful home, but it was well worth the effort after 15+ to years finally get it done. The contractors were amazing and it looks fantastic.
Before putting all of the furniture in its place I figured I'd give the floors a test run with the Audi. :) It was TONS o' fun!! Hope you enjoy the video!! Thanks for watching!!

This was a cool car. My cousin got it for Christmas from Radio Shack. It was a quick car back then.

Awesome! Yes, I'd like to do another video on this soon, probably on the actual upgrades I did to it.

Man your Quattro looks so fresh. I had this exact model as a kid and only wish I still had it. What a great caretaker and restorer. Nice work! Keep it up.

Right on! Yeah, I ran the car for maybe a year or two after I originally got it as a kid and I felt bad making my parents buy me 3-5 pounds (literally) worth of C and AA batteries (HEAVY!), bc they didn't last long at all. And rechargeable batteries in the '80s just weren't there yet. I kept the original motor intact, since nothing was wrong with it. I like to think the increased speed is partly bc it doesn't have all of those batteries!! LOL Unfortunately, I no longer have the box. :(

Glad you liked it, thanks for watching!! :) I had completely overhauled the electronics, so it operates like a modern RC car now. I originally received this as a Christmas present when I was a kid in 1985 and held on to it ever since!!

Can you please show 'under the hood' on your Radio Shack Audi, and maybe give a list of the type/brand of components that worked for your conversion? I have the same Audi, and I have been thinking about converting it to modern electronics, but I am new to the RC world, so I don't quite know how to figure out what size/model of parts to use for the conversion. Thanks.

YES! I plan to do a build video; orrrr more of an "after the build" video, since I didn't do a good job capturing the restromod process. It was fun, though. I went to my local hobby shop and they suggested everything but the motor, which I thought was odd. The rep's response was, "It's a motor, it just needs efficient power." It made sense, so I replaced the servo, ESC, radio, and light kit. The trick was mounting everything and making it work, which I will detail in the build video. :) Thanks for the comment/question!!

How and where did you get the lights installed?

The original car for the US market had incandescent lights on the front only, so the light buckets were already in place. The Japanese market car had lights on the front and back, so my car includes the rear light "mounts", but not actual light buckets. I am doing a "Bits & Bobs" video on this to show what I did to bring this up to a modern spec, including the light controller and new LED's. :)
