Having watched your review I bought the Drift Ghost S absolutely loved it UNTIL 1 month out of warranty it wouldn't switch on? tried everything but nothing worked, so as any normal person who has spent £250 I enquired about getting it repaired at my expense only to be told by Drift Innovation "SORRY WE DON'T REPAIR OUR CAMERA'S" In disbelief I asked everywhere and the answer was the same "WE DON'T REPAIR THE GHOST S YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY A NEW ONE" Never will I spend good money on the company again, shocking service, I now have a £250 BIN LINNER!! Keep the videos coming, they are great.

Have a hell of a time watching you drive on the left, get the willys sometimes when the road splits and crossings. Anyway, when using the remote to start and stop the video record ( I have the camera mounted on the wing of my plane) I notice that one clip is HD and very clear, and another clip looks grainy and out of focus, what's up?

Hi Russ, welcome to 2014, am looking forward to new content this year from you :-) Anyway, if I were to get a new helmet camera now I would only look at the Ghost as the replacement to my Contour ROAM. The problem is that it's just too expensive, as is the GoPro and many of the other leading helmet cameras. They have cornered the market and are cashing in as much as they can before someone overtakes their product and they loose the 'sweet spot'. This is what happened to Contour last year and they closed shop (they are now in the process of coming back following an investor buyout). This stuff is just too expensive.

I have a Gopro Hero 3 Black and a Drift 1080P. The Gopro is great attached to the bikes fairing, especially with the flexible mount system. But I prefer the Drift for attaching to my helmet, it does not stick out on the side so much. I have just moved my Drift from the right side to the top of my helmet. I think that the view is a lot better there - not loosing image width to the helmet. Good videos, nice to see you making more of them.

The Ghostess is a Great cam though and I really love the way Drift keep things working as regards mounts and stuff. Good job, British.. I think...Not 100% sure? My cam just carries on working though and does it's job brilliantly. Did drop it and broke the door at the rear. Fixed it :-)

Hi, Russ, based on my research and your very informative review of the Drift Ghost S, I have called the shop and bought one, as a means of recording my first trip to France on a bike. I came across your site after getting back into biking from the dark side (a Renault Senic) and am surprised how much I have remembered about bike-craft, but more worryingly how much I've forgotten or didn't know. Would be very interested in any intermediate/advanced training you might be offering, so I could tell you about some of the excellent biking roads in East Wales. Keep uploading Regards Strickers

Have been using the drift ghost s for my bike and also I recommended it to my workplace for use underwater (with additional housing) and quality of footage is very good in both applications. Small complaint with the ghost s is the back panel with the rubber inserts are easy to break off, replaced mine twice but that's me being clumsy/heavy handed I guess. Seen the new ghost 4K online, are you going to review this one? Looks like the ghost/ghost s model accessories are being phased out with the new 4K model which I think is a shame, personally I would go for a ghost s over the 4K based on what I've seen online.

I can get them at those prices 230, 350 in dollars, since they are not yet popular where I am. With the flatter lens it is less likely to get scratched when you take it off your bike and put it in your pocket but the video quality is pretty indistinguishable on youtube. One can tell in low light, but who really needs good quality in low light? The non-S seems to turn up the gain bleaching things out a little. I have also hear it said that 720p is enough for youtube, so the slow motion could be achieved by using the non-S at 720p 60fps. The mount is a standard 1/4 inch camera mount so tripods and other things (I have a bar mount with tripod screw) are all compatible. Nice video.

You are right about the comment that motorcyclists should use the DVR and not the tagging mode. However, does the tagging mode work while using the DVR mode? Ie. can you tag a video section during DVR so that that particular section will not be overwritten, when the camera loops through the memory card?

RoadcraftNottingham Actually I got this reply from the Drift support - any chance you could test this? DVR mode on, tagging on and then when recording and hitting the tag button, what will be saved to the card? "Tagging and DVR modes are both great functions, ideal for different purposes and can be used in conjunction with each other, although very similar in that they record in short intervals and so usually necessary to use one rather than both."

Hi RoadcraftNottingham- Just wanted to know, since you are a Drift dealer: what software is available for editing the videos that Drift cameras record (specifically, the Drift HD 1080p)? Can't use Sony Vegas with this video format and I'm losing sleep trying to figure out what I can use to edit ~30GB worth of helmet video.

  • @roadcraftnottingham7320

It should work with Vegas unless you have a copied Version. Cyberlink power director is also a good suite but again won't accept drift video unless it's an original version

Russ Stevenson So interesting. These softwares differentiate in what formats they accept, based on whether they are copied versions or not...? I was under the impression that the underlying reason for this issue is that the Drift camera encodes with Apple video codecs. But regardless, I'd like to know what software our professional here RoadcraftNottingham is using.

RoadcraftNottingham Well, this was unexpected. Anyways, working late last night, I managed to figure out a solution: by making file extensions visible in File Explorer, and changing the ".mov" extension to ".mpg" or ".m2t", Vegas will recognize and accept the file. Now, I have a new problem: how to keep the videos from becoming choppy, both in Vegas and after rendering. ಠᴗಠ

Quick question Russ, Can you supply a cable to go from a 1080 into an autocom logic kit to use the autocom mic as the mic for the camera. To quote Autocom "For this you will need a cable to take the microphone and Ground from Aux 1 that will then transfer that to an input for the Drift". I think its a normal double ended mic cable (like an extension), the drift end is a 2.5mm jack but the autocom end is a 3.5mm Thats a new one for ya lol. Hope all is well

Finally, after promising myself for too long I purchased the "last" Ghost S at the NEC bike show late last year. Discounted and a free battery and my credit card in hand, I didn't stand a chance. Couldn't mount it to my Multitec as flip up would conflict, although it fits nicely on the side of my Laser Monico. I have mount on the RT12 as well and looking forward to testing it out when I fins a nice day to sort it out. One thing, I find the camera is a little loose in the mount (anyone else have this issue), I slip a thin bit of plastic in as well which tightens it up, might stick that in with double sided when I'm happy with it all. I have bought some go pro safety lines as I like to keep the camera attached in case it gets knocked off of does drop out a mount. I have the mic as well so might give this V logging idea a go when I'm out. Not sure I have the voice for it mind! I particuarly wanted the tagging mode having spent way to much time trawling through hrs of boring stuff to find some interesting footage, mind you I have a cheaper smaller camera setup on the bike with the auto start for rolling recording, lower quality but it would do the job. I must get that set up again. So, hopefully I'll get some footage up soon. \v/

I bought a Ghost HD rather than an S the other week to use for Vlogging, (replacing my Sony AS15 as a primary cam), after a little research i didn't feel the benefits of the S justify the cost increase... But i guess it comes down to personal requirement! Pretty much all the different cameras on the market now offer something that another doesn't, makes the decision difficult if you want a good 'all-rounder', but Drift have definitely got the right idea for anything that requires a helmet n mindless ramblings ;) Unfortunately though i now can't use it... Bloody crashed didn't i. Nice review though, very informative!

I have the Drift Ghost. None of these cameras are perfect, but the Drift line are far more user-friendly for MotoVloggers. But here is one suggestion for Drift: When mounted to the side of the helmet, the cameras have great vertical adjustment through the universal clip and good horizon adjustment through the rotatable lens. The only thing missing for helmet placement is lateral adjustment. For side mounting, you want it as far forward as possible so the camera doesn't capture your helmet or the side of your face, but helmets often curve in at the front which worsens the problem. If the universal clip attached to the camera with a lockable ball joint instead of a straight screw, a person could adjust the lateral angle, moving the view straight ahead to avoid capturing the face or helmet. This change is simple to engineer and cost effective, since it would also eliminate the need for the rotatable lens, as the ball joint would allow for any and all adjustment; lateral, vertical, horizon, etc. I have modified my universal clip to allow for some lateral change, and also to allow for subtle vertical adjustments, rather than the click stops provided by the universal clip teeth. What do you think?

That's a great idea, especially for those who mount on top of the helmet as that'd be the hardest to get right. Keep these suggestions coming as I can feed it back to them. Thanks

RoadcraftNottingham I really should do a video on my channel showing the modifications to the universal clip that I have done. The main one is to install a thick rubber washer on the universal clip teeth. The effect is: you are no longer limited to the click stops between teeth for vertical adjustment if mounting on the side of the helmet, or for lateral adjustment if mounting on the helmet top. That simple mod allows you to make micro adjustments. Big difference!

Hey Russ, In Australia State Police have started fining motorcyclists for mounting camera's on their helmets. Apparently the adhesive stickers can compromise the structural integrity of the helmets according to lawmakers. Could you possibly do a video in response? And perhaps a video where to best mount your go-pro of camera for comfort/wind-drag reduction/safety. It would be greatly appreciated if you could!

Aussie cops come up with any bullshit excuse to "claim" cameras on helmets are illegal. Their "claim" is, that it's a "modification" just so they can issue fines. The fact is, ..it is "not" a modification, ..it is deemed "an accessory" ..or "an attachment" no different to a visor and, the sticky pad doesn't do shit, or change the construction of the helmet in any way. If you get a fine for it, fight it ...by writing letters, ..or if absolutely necessary, by going to court.

The problem I have with my Ghost S is that on the high bitrate setting the camera doesn't continue recording after the first 4gb file size limit is reached. If I switch back to normal bitrate capture then I can record until the battery runs dry and I have continuous capture over multi 4gb files. I can't say I notice any drop-off in image quality but I know that the higher bitrate is required for TV broadcast-quality output and for colour grading. I can't find any help at Drift. Any ideas?

I think Drift have taken a huge chunk of the market from GoPro recently, maybe all us vloggers have helped a bit :P The Drift is a complete package and you don't have to buy 'extra' bits that you expect to be on a camera, like the screen. Plus the rotating lens is fantastic as well as having a mounting system based on a standard screw fit. Just need to wait for the Ghost S price to drop so I can justify an upgrade from the Ghost.

I agree, the Gopro took a step backwards with the 3. I was gonna buy one till I saw they took the separate mic and usb jack away. As you say, the rotating lens, screen and may I add, waterproof out the box makes it a no brainer for a helmet cam.

I like drift, but use go pros .. The S has some nice features, but I know me .. I'll turn it on n leave it on n edit it later.. I had the gp3, but have 3+ now . I was never satisfied with the hero 3.. The increase in battery life is plus on the 3+ & also love superview .. I can't find much need to have it plugged in as battery life is above average on 3+ ... It's not bulky but can be awkward on the side of the helmet .. The drift is a winner with sleekness in that area. I give both great scores on picture quality until you upload to KZread. ;P .. I'd say go with the one you prefer .. Me.. I prefer the go pro .. But would use a drift any day of the week also ..

I have the Drift HD Ghost and reject getting it for my simple needs. If I had to do it over again, I'd get the ContourRoam2, the Ion Air Pro 2 or the Sony HDR-AS15. That's what I recommend now to people who ask me. If they really get into it and want a "better" camera (eg, GoPro, Drift, etc), they can use their first as a 2nd camera or sell it. It's not that I hate the Drift. But for $400 USD, I feel shortchanged. If they had a 720p camera with the rotating lens, external mic, real buttons that stick out in a rain/splash proof (not waterproof) package for $200-250 USD, then I would be a very happy camper. Here are my major gripes with the Drift (in order of importance to me). Though my DVR issue and how Drift handled it (with me at least) is why I'll never buy from them again (and why I refuse to get any more of their products, including accessories). The controls on the device are the absolutely worst of the major action cameras I've seen. Since I lost my remote control (and I refuse to pay $50 USD to replace it), I've had to deal with using the buttons. It made me realize that cameras with a dedicated on/off switch and a big button or control to start/stop recording have it absolutely right. Especially with gloves on. The universal clip's sides broke off from using them in 0 fahrenheit (-17 celsius) degree weather. It costs $20 USD to get a new one. It should be more like $10 USD. More importantly, I've lost confidence in it and I'm looking at alternatives. For $20, I would expect an internal metal bar to provide more strength on that extremely fragile part of the clip. The battery life is incredibly inconsistent (or maybe I'm doing something wrong). Sometimes I'll get 3 hours and other times it seems to die after only 20 minutes. I do appreciate though being able to plug in my Garmin cigarette-style charger to the Drift and have it externally powered. I don't understand why 720p has only 1 field of view (FOV) while 1080p has 3. Why can't all video size settings have all 3?. I never record on 1080p since 720p suits me fine and saves a ton on storage requirements. The DVR feature erases ALL files, not just the DVR specific files. I wrote to Drift about this issue and I got back an extremely lame and non-apologetic response that it was by design. What REALLY pissed me off me is that they provide no warning that this feature will erase ALL files. And there was another support person on their website that wrote to a user that the DVR feature would not erase non-DVR files. And as of today, I still do not see that they've fixed this issue. Connecting the camera to my iPhone via WiFi is a pain in the ass. This should use Bluetooth. Here are some suggestions. (1) Have lower cost options (eg, a White and Silver Edition). (2) Use real buttons and a dedicated on/off and record buttons that are NOT flat. (3) Have a fuel gauge type of readout on the camera showing how much battery is left. Having to get that information from the screen is a pain. (4) Change the settings screens from only large icons to small icons/labels. The icons are too similar and confusing to know which setting I'm looking to go to.

Motortriker It's pointing a little too far off centre for my liking which is what i'm trying to overcome. Did you fit yours with the flat mount? Steve Morgan Thanks for the sub Steve. Subbed back. I use the helmet (curved) mount. I stuck it as far forward as possible, just where the flip-front contacts the main shell. You are correct about the view: it does centre towards the oncoming lane rather than the straight-ahead position. I guess it isn't ideal. Have you thought about the Drift shoulder harness? You'd lose you head-turns though, so no longer point-of-view.

  • @SteveCardiff

    @SteveCardiff

Motortriker Yeah, don't fancy the shoulder harness. I might visit a mate and maybe knock up a thin aluminium wedge of sorts, shape it to fit the helmet nicely, and then have a flat outer part for the drift flat mount. If shaped correctly the camera should look straight ahead. I'll use VHB tape to stick the mount on :)

it's a shame Drift abandon their older model cameras almost immediately they bring out a new one, no more firmware updates :/ I have an HD720 and HD170 Stealth and my one major gripe is with the fit of the universal clip into the flat/curved shoe, it's very poor, I've had them replaced and still the same poor fit. other than that they're pretty sturdy piece of kit.

The only reason to buy it is it's the most up to date and possibly the higher bit rate option which I'll be trying out soon when they fix the firmware problem with it (it records 22m 17s (3.90GB) then stops recording) I've told them this issue and they're looking into it.

RoadcraftNottingham Hping for you that you get an answer. I am having great hopes in the Garmin Virb Elite. This is the month that the latest and greatest software update is due. I am expecting a major Firmware update also. Do not take me wrong, I think Drift is continueing to get better and better, But these half ass releases that both GP and drift put out, Really do or did not excite me. Oh keep in mind Sony has the AS-100 coming out. I've checked out the specs, and they are still at least two years behind GP, personally I think Drift is about 1 &1/2 years behind GP. Garmin is hmmmmm, about right even with sony now. Just MO. I think you will do fine running this line over there, I'm not about to get into the who's better game. As we all know GP is setting the standard that all are trying to get to. I think when GP comes out with the GPH4 They will leap ahead another five years. But once again that is just my Opinion.

  • @RoadcraftNottingham

I think the only place the GP3 wins over the Drift is about 10% pic quality, Drift has a screen as standard, rotatable lens, thinner profile for helmets, Car DV mode (loop), can run a mic AND off external power at the same time without buying extras and is waterproof without needing an extra case. I honestly think GP are worried. :-)
