No idea if Zim was ever intended to be a sympathetic villain but that's how I see him.

@Sofia Bresett He is 50 😅. But for an Irken he is young yet ( I believe so). GIR is the baby 😁, and Zim is the big brother xD.

Honestly this sort of plotline would actually be a good way to end the series for good. Like, it kinda happened in the movie, where he felt the Tallest didn't care. But a plot where he finds out there's nothing he could do to get their attention could work. And I don't remember where but I'm pretty sure one of the writers stated that Zim actually started to care for the Earth after a certain point. Zim is a cynical show, and it probably wouldn't end this way, but having Zim find himself complacent with his life on Earth and letting it coexist alongside him would be a sweet way of giving it a sendoff. But knowing Invader Zim it would probably end with the Tallest blowing up or something

Zim is definitely the most tragic cartoon alien, he was literally abandoned by his own kind just because he was too dangerous, too different. All he wanted was to prove he was worth something, that he could be great, but they were either too scared of him or wanted nothing to do with him. Can you imagine what that’s like.

the thing is about zim, is that he just wants to be loved he doesn't actually WANT to take over the earth and be "lord of all humans", he just wants to be loved, or even just appreciated; he believes that taking over the earth and enslaving humanity will make the tallest adore him, and so will the rest of the irken empire.. really, he just wants some love lol

AUGH I think I might love this one the best... just the transition and Dib and Zim's dynamic changing over time the longer he's there... and Zim becoming more depressed the longer he stays I just... augh I want the full song of your version ;w;

ouch, this is the best version. ok maybe I shouldn't say that... it's not a competition, I like the other ones I've seen too but this is my favorite, I love the classroom transition

As soon as I saw it was an Invader Zim animatic for Drift Away, I knew exactly what it was going to be about and I already started to cry

Whether you view Zim a sympathetic villain or an idiot you have to agree what Red and Purple did was cruel. They could have found some use for Zim that didn’t involve completely lying to him

Before i clicked i forgot that iz and su were different things and honestly expected to see spinel. This was still so spectacular, though!

Prepare for a ramble cause this animatic only solidified one of my mini theories about zim and his entire race. Irkens are designed to be perfect and some even go into the military. Of course much like earths politics, it’s run by two corrupt leaders who will readily and easily toss away (kill) anyone who isn’t perfect for the job of being an invader. Here’s where my theory of sorts plays in. I’m sure Johnen didn’t intend for this to be the case but as an autistic (and generally neurodivergent/“disabled”) person, Zim being “defective” and essentially hated and shunned by other irkens feels like a major allegory for the stigma around autism. Think about it. In society, nine times out of ten if anyone finds out that you’re autistic (or “defective”/not normal), you get outcasted. I cant tell you how many times throughout my entire life i’ve been bullied, shunned, ignored, all for being “different”. It was only when I was 21 did i go in for a formal diagnosis and i got my answers as to why, my entire life, i’ve been hated for something I couldn’t control. I dunno about you, but all of this easily plays into Invader Zim. I’d go into detail about it but I’m at work and don’t really have the concentration to be able to. I think i got my point across tho. Love this animatic it broke my heart and as a zim kinnie i saw/see a LOT of myself in our evil gremlin irken

I mean I can understand the Tallest's perspective because Zim is kind of annoying and he is really dangerous around any living being, but I still feel pity for him because he's just so dangerous that his leaders who he admires send him away to die. There's just something wrong with him and he doesn't even know it because he's so arrogant and childish, and he's so in denial that he can't even see that the Tallest don't give a damn about him.
