Dressage Fail: Lame FEI Grand Prix Dressage Horse Compilation

When you tell me that grand prix dressage riders are the best in the world and this is what is coming down centerline I not only judge them I judge you. By allowing grand prix dressage riders to have free reign and only be held accountable by "those who have done it" you end up with a complete and total failure of accountability in the sport of dressage.
This is not the first time we have called out dressage riders for taking lame horses down the centerline in the grand prix, you can watch Jill Irving finish the grand prix on DH, but it is the most that we have ever seen in one weekend.
You cannot watch this and tell me that not one single person that is part of any of these team did not stop for a single moment to say, maybe today is not your day to ride the grand prix dressage test. This is a complete and total dressage fail and is why we feature so many dressage disasters here at Dressage Hub.
This an absolute fail not only by what should be some of the top riders in the sport but the top vets, grooms and stewards that should be monitoring the warm-up ring.
*Note for Karen: I should not be able to make this video is the world's best dressage riders were in fact doing what they do well.

These high level riders spend hours on the backs of these horses, how can they not pick a lame step. I had a chronically lame horse, that ended up retiring, and I was an amateur rider and I could easily tell he was lame even though it was a subtle lameness.

If you regularly ride a horse, have a partnership for at least a month to know how the horse's gaits feel you'll pick up on lameness immediately. My ex-lease horse went lame on the trail and I felt it immediately when it wasn't even visible. A few hours later hopping lame. (He recovered quickly, he bruised one of his front hooves on a rock.) You will feel the slightest change, because it just doesn't feel "right".

@@lynni3461 I'm not very good at spotting lame horses, but I'll write here what I've spotted, in case I can help you 0:16 On the extended trot, it's obvious that the front legs move differentely; the right one makesnice rounded movements, the left one make flat movements. + the horse's head goes up when the left leg goes down --> front left leg is lame. 01:00 The back right leg is lame. Back left hoof goes near the front left hoof, but there is a gap between the back right hoof and the front right hoof. 1:33 - 1:51 One ftont leg lame (I'm not sure wich one). The horse trips, piaffes sticking on the floor, put the head up when the lame leg touches the ground. And it goes on for the rest of the performancrme.

Amen. I don’t believe for a second these riders couldn’t feel it. Like you, I had a mare with a subtle lameness - so subtle the first full lameness workup couldn’t pinpoint anything. I had my friend take her on a walk for a second opinion. She couldn’t detect anything at first but called me halfway through agreeing that something was off. We couldn’t get to the bottom of it, but a second lameness workup six months later showed side bones forming, so I think it must’ve been related to that. What I know for certain is that we amateurs don’t possess a hidden talent these pros don’t possess.

They surely must... Thanks for sharing - exposing these horrid creatures by name and evidence is the best thing we can do, as responsible horse people who actually care about our mount's welfare. Actually, you can see the lameness in the front from the very beginning of the video, but as the pattern continues it becomes more and more pronounced. I'm honestly angry that not only the rider, nor the judges stopped it from continuing, that horse looks to be in the worst pain out of all the others in the video- tail swishing, ears pinned back, lips tight.

@@AccidentallyOnPurpose I see it now. He is fully lame at the start. Shame that, he's trying so hard for his rider and the rider doesn't notice. Horse looks like he hadn't gotten REM sleep in three days, which is usually the maximum they can do before really suffering. Add exercise to that and you have a recipe for horrible injuries. My mare hid lameness from me once. Perfect in the walk (I think her feet were a little long) except for a reluctance to go down hill. It was a steep hill so eh. She volunteered the trot, me never asking, and was lame as can be. I had to stop her three times before I finally convinced her that "No, we aren't trotting anymore! You hurt!". She loves going fast! We cut the lesson super short and I got off as soon as she had stopped. Like, you can feel when they are off! She's just good at hiding it sometimes. Unfortunately her past has given her a lot of experience in that. She also has full veto power to not go on rides. If she doesn't feel like it or hurts or something, she just says no. It only happens like once every 20 rides or so. She refused the other day because it was raining. It was kinda that nasty rain.

Something can happen between the trot up and the actual test. What I don't understand is why the riders are not noticing it earlier. Proves they are not in tune with the horse. Also why the judges are not stopping the tests as soon as they see the horse is unlevel.

This is true, horses are horses, and things happen. But I disagree, and say this is unlikely if it was a recent injury there would be swelling or cut skin that would be hard to hide. If your horse's goes a hits it hock on a stall wall etc and it three hours until your ride, you are going to know and there is going to be swelling and steroids don't have that much effect that quickly.

  • @IreneAdler-ds5mo

    @IreneAdler-ds5mo

    Жыл бұрын

@@animallover4101 I don't agree with rein lameness as scientist, horses don't immediately become that unsound as those horses were under saddle. A horse that has a poor fitting saddle or bridle, will buck, bolt shy etc some type of evasion. Horses that lame in the hind hind is a result of hyperflexion abuse, through rolkur as stated by Dr. Hershmann. There is always a causally point or agent horses are not "rein lame", something has happened to make them lame. A stone in the shoe, shoulder bones worn away through a poor fitting saddle etc. IMO you would have to be brute of a rider to get on a perfectly sound horse and make them appear so lame so quickly. It takes time hopping on a horse, that was fine and then you ride them for say an 1 hour or day what in the name of heaven were you do to that poor horse to turn them lame so quickly. IMO these are long term lameness issues and the riders just don't care.

These horses are off a lot and it’s in part due to an overwhelming amount of work. I was taught by classical masters that they did not do dressage five days a week. They alternated between trail rides, dressage and a little light fun work. They didn’t want the horse to get sour.

Exactly. I’m new to watching dressage; even I could tell the movement was a struggle. I keep coming across abuse of these equestrian athletes. Rollcur is abominable ! In my opinion, if you force your horse using the rollcur position, then you should be forced into an unnatural position for every moment your horse is abused. I have the same logic to improper and/or painful bits - let’s put a scaled down bit in your mouth and pull and push on reins. I’ll volunteer for both human consequences; but hey, I’m nice like that. Also - why do judges not enforce the rules that are clearly in place ?! Is it the greed of the owners? Are judges accepting bribes?

You do the same taxing movements over and over (your entire life) and you will end up lame. Repetition, repetition, repetition. It honestly doesn't surprise me how often dressage horses break. Horses were not born to these things all the time, they're not machines. Dressage itself should be the smallest portion of ridden work, light and short. This keeps ligaments and muscle sound. The horse needs to be a complete athlete doing other things the majority of time. This variety, like out rides for example on different surfaces, what Americans call "trail riding" keeps them fit and toned and using muscles in a different way, even just at a walk but preferably all three paces. Collection all the time particularly on arena surfacing is especially damaging. Riders who are afraid of outrides should let others do it instead.

If they were good riders they would've noticed that their horse is lame in the warm up ring. And if they did notice and decided to compete regardless they should be banned imo bc of animal wellfare. People who even consider competing on a horse that is in pain should not have horses at all. Embarrasing either way to show a horse like this, absolutely pathetic.
