Wise old men (and women) were and always will be the repository of the essence of human wisdom and experience. We have listened to them, sitting around fire for ages, all across the world. They are the true story tellers, having stumbled through the jungle of life, tasting the sweet fruits and licking their wounds from the thorny bushes. They have healed and hopefully have a poise and sanity not readily accessible in youth. Its wonderful and sad at the same time, that we have to mostly come to the internet to access them today. I’m 49, “successful”, don’t drink, had never done a party drug as a kid. Was always on the straight and narrow as a result of a chaotic upbringing. At 40 yrs old, did psychedelics (5 MEO-DMT, ayahuasca with shaman) and it’s radically changed my life for the better. ❤ I’ve accessed a deeper intelligence within and without. My mind and heart are expanded beyond measure and I’ve discovered a pliability within myself that enriches me and gives me a deeper understanding for the nature of life and being human.

As a dane It's so cool to see a guest from our little country. I was not aware of Tor's existence, so this is really cool as I'm also very interested in consciousness and the mind. This episode was really entertaining and touched on many topics I enjoyed pondering on. The mind is so amazingly fascinating and I can feel there's a lot left to be discovered. I say that because I've experienced first hand the unbelievable capability of the brain when asleep and barely conscious as a very lucid dreamer. With the things I see, it's no wonder fantastical ideas in myths and ancient religious imagery were imagined. Much like AI is based on input, our brain and what we imagine also operates on input, but there's much more variance than just that, as we're biological. That's why I think any super advanced AI would have to be biomechanical. What I keep coming back to is that chaos to some extent is a necessary good, otherwise we would never have been wired to deal with it. We wouldn't have made a shield to block it with.

A shield or a sieve? Or maybe a filter? Or maybe filter(s), plural, probably connected to each subconscious domain. Anger, hunger and so on. Filters scan the chaos for any tools or obstacles as sense data comes in. UseFUL proceeds to awareness for evaluation to current aims and goals; useLESS gets stored, probably during sleep when external input overload slows them stops, into whichever categories the input goes per individual filters so isn't processed continually. Or that can be recalled later if goals or paths have to change later due to change in circumstances. Why lack of GOOD sleep is so detrimental. Can never offload the useless "stuff" like when a computer is never cold booted. HA!

Creating music, meaningful dialogue, and rhyming poems on the fly, as well as places, a plot, characters and so on. I'm gonna be working on recreating one of those dreams, as I remember about 90% of it. I keenly enjoyed the teaser trailer yesterday and have been looking forward to the conversation ever since! Will be watching after the kids go to bed because I want to be able to concentrate without interruptions. I got the biggest kick out of your Babylon Bee interview with Travis, dearest Dr. Peterson! It was such a delight to me to see you enjoying yourself hugely, so good to hear you genuinely laugh because the interview struck you funny and not because poor human nature is being what it is. The bits that made me laugh till I cried was watching you trying and failing to keep a straight face. I never forget what it was like seeing you so sick we thought you might never laugh again, and now you do, and it’s so good. Dr. Peterson, I know you’re having the devil’s own time with religious trolls lately, and I was thinking. Jonathan’s been talking about the gargoyles on the outside of the church. They are the fringe, the guardians of the church. Sometimes frightening, sometimes grotesque, sometimes grimly amusing, but always off-putting. They don’t represent anything connected with church but there they are, difficult to ignore, impossible to explain. And I think that the religious trolls, online or in person, correspond with those gargoyles. I don’t know what purpose they serve. Perhaps they are intended to test the resolve of those who might enter the church but are fearful. What I do know is that perfect theology does not make a person a Christian; only living in imitation of Christ does. That’s all the thoughts my children are letting me think for the moment so I will return to listen later on. With so very much love Ruth Anne ❤

@@DailyCorvid oh no, the trolls are out tonight! You can tell, I think, that I put my whole heart into everything I write, even if it is only a KZread comment, because there isn’t any point in writing otherwise. I was thinking about your comment on Our Lord coming back to judge the world in righteousness, and how His peaceful and meek and gentle side will be in abeyance on that day, and I connected that in my thoughts with the Revelations, and the image of Our Lord as a judge with a sword coming out of his mouth. The imagery was of Our Lord girt about the breast with a golden girdle, and I was taught that symbolizes that His divine affections were restrained, bound in, not pouring forth but constrained, until the judgement demanded by His holiness was complete. Your comment reminded me of those meditations.

Further to the discussion of agriculture, I am reminded of the 7-year cycles required in the promised land when the children of Israel returned from Egypt. The land was to lie fallow every 7th year, which affected farming practices throughout the 7-year cycle. During the 7th year the people ate what the land produced naturally, plus what they had saved from the 6th year (in which God promised abundant harvests).

Would love to see another conversation of these two… in person hopefully one day! It is an interesting point about the fall from the garden Eden as the move from hunting and gathering to farming… another indication for this that I read in a book once, was that after the fall, Adam had to to the earth and Eve would give labour in pain - the author related the start of farming to a change in women’s hips, but I don’t remember why that was…

I am a physicist and I will explain why our scientific knowledge refutes the idea that consciousness is generated by the brain and that the origin of our mental experiences is physical/biological . My argument proves that the fragmentary structure of brain processes implies that brain processes are not a sufficient condition for the existence of consciousness, which existence implies the existence in us of an indivisible unphysical element, which is usually called soul or spirit (in my youtube channel you can find a video with more detailed explanations). I also argue that all emergent properties are subjective cognitive contructs used to approximately describe underlying physical processes, and that these descriptions refer only to mind-dependent entities. Consciousness, being implied by these cognitive contructs, cannot itself be an emergent property. Preliminary considerations: the concept of set refers to something that has an intrinsically conceptual and subjective nature and implies the arbitrary choice of determining which elements are to be included in the set; what exists objectively are only the single elements. In fact, when we define a set, it is like drawing an imaginary line that separates some elements from all the other elements; obviously this imaginary line does not exist physically, independently of our mind, and therefore any set is just an abstract idea, a cognitive construct and not a physical entity and so are all its properties. Similar considerations can be made for a sequence of elementary processes; sequence is a subjective and abstract concept. Mental experience is a precondition for the existence of subjectivity/arbitrariness and cognitive constructs, therefore mental experience cannot itself be a cognitive construct; obviously we can conceive the concept of consciousness, but the concept of consciousness is not actual consciousness. (With the word consciousness I do not refer to self-awareness, but to the property of being conscious= having a mental experiences such as sensations, emotions, thoughts, memories and even dreams). From the above considerations it follows that only indivisible elements may exist objectively and independently of consciousness, and consequently the only logically coherent and significant statement is that consciousness exists as a property of an indivisible element. Furthermore, this indivisible entity must interact globally with brain processes because we know that there is a correlation between brain processes and consciousness. This indivisible entity is not physical, since according to the laws of physics, there is no physical entity with such properties; therefore this indivisible entity can be identified with what is traditionally called soul or spirit. The soul is the missing element that interprets globally the distinct elementary physical processes occurring at separate points in the brain as a unified mental experience. Some clarifications. The brain doesn't objectively and physically exist as a mind-independent entity since we create the concept of the brain by separating an arbitrarily chosen group of quantum particles from everything else. This separation is not done on the basis of the laws of physics, but using addictional subjective criteria, independent of the laws of physics; actually there is a continuous exchange of molecules with the blood and when and how such molecules start and stop being part of the brain is decided arbitrarily. Brain processes consist of many parallel sequences of ordinary elementary physical processes occurring at separate points. There is no direct connection between the separate points in the brain and such connections are just a subjective abstractions used to approximately describe sequences of many distinct physical processes. Indeed, considering consciousness as a property of an entire sequence of elementary processes implies the arbitrary definition of the entire sequence; the entire sequence as a whole (and therefore every function/property/capacity attributed to the brain) is a subjective abstraction that does not refer to any mind-independendent reality. Physicalism/naturalism is based on the belief that consciousness is an emergent property of the brain. However, an emergent property is defined as a property that is possessed by a set of elements that its individual components do not possess; my arguments prove that this definition implies that emergent properties are only subjective cognitive constructs and therefore, consciousness cannot be an emergent property. Actually, all the alleged emergent properties are just simplified and approximate descriptions or subjective/arbitrary classifications of underlying physical processes or properties, which are described directly by the fundamental laws of physics alone, without involving any emergent properties (arbitrariness/subjectivity is involved when more than one option is possible; in this case, more than one possible description). An approximate description is only an abstract idea, and no actual entity exists per se corresponding to that approximate description, simply because an actual entity is exactly what it is and not an approximation of itself. What physically exists are the underlying physical processes. Emergence is nothing more than a cognitive construct that is applied to physical phenomena, and cognition itself can only come from a mind; thus emergence can never explain mental experience as, by itself, it implies mental experience. My approach is scientific and is based on our scientific knowledge of the physical processes that occur in the brain; my arguments prove that such scientific knowledge excludes the possibility that the physical processes that occur in the brain could be a sufficient condition for the existence of consciousness. @@rantsandraves8515 With the word consciousness I do not refer to self-awareness, but to the property of being conscious= having a mental experience such as sensations, emotions, thoughts, memories and even dreams. The most fundamental empirical piece of information we have is the existence of our mental experiences. Consciousness is what we experience, therefore we know exactly what consciousness is. Consciousness is what we know best because it is the only reality we directly know exactly as it is in itself, the only reality we directly experience because it is experience itself. We have then a direct empirical knowledge of consciousness and consciousness represents the necessary preliminary condition for all other knowledge, consciousness is the foundation of all knowledge.

Self experimented with psychedelics 20+ years ago initially recreationally then to find an alternative to antidepressants, antipsychotics and "therapy" for chronic PTSD and clinical depression. Took a few trys to get the dosage right but after the first use I finally felt like myself after a 25 year battle. Researched reprogramming and got one on one talking therapy alongside it and literally alleviated all symptoms within a year. Got a second chance at life thanks to psychedelics in a controlled environment.

I love their discussion on fine dining and how an emphasis on local seasonal crops is what's made Noma stand out on a global stage. But cooking as an artform is still rich despite the reliance on staples like the 4 crops. So what happens if everyone adopts this seasonal mentality? Would the hypothetical ideal be techniques from every culinary tradition applied to the local ingredients of every region? Food is already incredibly diverse now, but the possibilities are endless!

Back in my day, Dr. Peterson, “playing house” meant something vastly different from the life you share with Tammy. My grandfather used the term disparagingly to describe couples who lived together without being married and committed and that’s the exact opposite of you two. But all teasing playfulness aside, another bit from C. S. Lewis’s great treatise on grief and marriage and love seemed to exactly suit the way you describe Tammy: “I have described [Lewis’s wife, Joy] as a sword. … But I ought to have balanced it. But also like a garden. Like a nest of gardens, wall within wall, hedge within hedge, more secret, more full of fragrant and fertile life, the further you entered.” He describes her earlier as “my trusty comrade, friend, shipmate, fellow-soldier.” All these Tammy is to you.
