Dreams of an Insomniac: An Analog Horror Masterpiece

Analog horror is a VERY popular genre of internet horror, for better or for worse. Today I’d like to talk about what I think is the BEST analog horror series and try and give some attention to the underrated gem that is Dreams of an Insomniac :-)

Knowing Pastra, it's very likely that Lankman Asylum is directly inspired by Arkham Asylum from the Batman franchise (possibly the game iteration): Both have little to no care of their patients, both keep inhuman creatures in their facilities and both are named after their founder's surnames (Jeremiah Arkham, Herbert Lankman). Also, this iteration Lankman gives me big Scarecrow vibes with his look.

  • @GuessImaGuest

Yes, actually. You would be correct. Pastra has taken great influence from the Batman's horror elements, as well as Resident Evil. How do I know this? Simple, really. Pastra adores Scarecrow and Nemesis, who he already dedicated videos to on his channel. Pastra also seems to prefer psychological horror, so it wouldn't be too far-fetched to say he took inspiration from Arkham Asylum.

Alex is a breath of fresh air for me, really. It seems so rare to see characters that are searching for answers be as empathetic as he seems to be. His interview with the woman is full of genuine compassion and reassurance, whereas it seems more often that characters trying to solve a mystery are more focused on answers than the well-being of the interviewee(s). Or, if they are compassionate, it's typically just to make the interviewee comfortable enough to answer the questions. But Alex really seems to care about her as a person and her paranoia and trauma as much as he wants answers to his questions. The interview may have failed, but Alex tried his best. He sounded truly sad afterwards. EDIT: Just fixed up a few sentences EDIT 2: GOOD LORD I used the word "seem" way too much. XD

One thing you forgot to mention, Clyde in the og canon was the one who attacked lankmann, which gave Clyde their intellect and, more interestingly, their sadism. This means that there is a very real possibility that Clyde relished what he did to Krueger. Winfrey is also the only one who has fully developed due to the fact that they had a surplus of food to feed off of thanks to the asylum. Unfortunately, this came at the price of Winfrey being the equivalent of a feral animal because of the patients they were fed not being the most stable. So not only are they built like a polar bear ODing on steroids, they have the personality of one too. If the veldiguns' habits of pairing up together is anything to go by, that means that Clyde and Winfrey are going to meet eventually.

21:26 small correction: while a majority of the soundtrack of DOAI is original, they do use some older music. The first example I can think of being a slowed version of“In The Mood” by Glenn Miller playing during the Lankmann Foundation tape in volume 1. The original music that was made though is wonderful

The fact that a veldigun’s touch doesn’t slowly kill the person, but supposedly infects and transforms them into veldiguns themselves is ominous yet very interesting. I did have the theory that Lankmann was a normal human turned Veldigun (whether by choice or forced or whatever) and watching this video might just confirm my theory. (Also, I’m not 100% sure, but I also think that “Candy Mouse” might be a reference to yet another one of Pastra’s oc Klaus. Just wanted to point that out)

Something interesting, the analog horror trope of burnt images onto an screen or overlay sometimes isn’t just done for the spooky. With old VHS footage, images can be burned over on old film through re-recordings. An example of this is the supposed “Ghost of Walt Disney” footage that sprung up online a few years back. “The Ghost of Walt Disney” footage follows what looks like an apparition strolling through the park late after hours on Disney surveillance footage. But this was just an error with the vhs film Disney was using, with old analog surveillance systems vhs tapes would be reused and recorded over thus the apparition of Walt Disney was just a guest from sometime during operating hours. All this is to say a certain level of mystery around what is wrong with the tapes themselves is made compelling through these errors. Because in your mind you can then justify that maybe the tapes aren’t haunted, because these are just errors on damaged film. Or then again, knowing the nature presented of this being, can you really be sure?

just a silly late night thought but winfrey's reveal scene being rather red than his own colour makes me feels like he's in completely in lankmann's control unlike clyde's vids previously where he is out there somewhere, roaming, waiting to strike. basically, the scene shows lankmann's power and control rather than winfrey as a threat you need to beware (again, unlike clyde)

There is another peice of analog horror I find pretty decent, the organator enterprise, it’s quite new, but it has an incredible weirdcore vibe like no other and whilst it only has 3 episodes. the info Dr nowhere has given about this helps us understand but even then, a lot of things are quite coherent, enterprise means a hard to create project and the “thumper” creature has been said by Drnowhere as the organator, and this creature seems to be capable of killing, consuming all the organs of its victim and stitching the victims torso back together perfectly. The organator also seems to have childlike tendencies which is probably important This series as is, is great in my opinion because it’s simple, but it’s coherent and spooky

IT IS LIKELY THAT THIS IS NOT ENTIRELY CANON TO THE SERIES!* * -There are always six of them, and they always travel in pairs. Clyde and Winfrey are one of these pairs. -Veldigun start their lives as barely conscious puddles of pitch black sludge, and their forms become more defined and solid as they consume more victims. -Veldigun specifically devour the psyche and memories of their victims. -Surviving victims that aren’t left as walking husks recall getting visions of a massive, terrifying, six-eyed monster when they were attacked.

It is possible that he was found in it cornfield maybe even a shitty haunted house attraction And finally, I think specimen 0 1 is the flock explaining why it doesn’t have a name convention like the others and why they are still in there void state

The ost is outright phenomenal, my favorite motif Lyra made was the one for Clyde. The simple short melody going frantic and accelerating as this thing draws closer perfectly captures that building dread, the need to run. I absolutely love it, and hope it returns when Clyde returns.

We need to get wendigoon on this, as its a prime example of something he talks about alot, the horror of a childs drawings. To explaine, goon states that the horror of a kids drawing isnt the creepy shapes and faces, but the idea of "what the hell dose this thing ACTUALLY look like" and this series is doing this for the original cartoon designs. Prime example being the bit wherw the Smiling Snatcher is looking at the screen, its cartoon face slowly warping into the actual NIGHTMARE lurking behind..

Idk how helpful this might be but: i personally don't think the series is scary, just slightly paranoia inducing. Usually the concept of scary for me is mostly just disgust and umcomfortableness or jumpiness. It doesn't really have any big jumpscares and gross hardcore scenery, the visuals are very very good and the acting is fine. It's mostly just the feeling of something around you tho, like goosebumps and shit. Plus, you have to pay a little bit of atrention to detail to understand the story so that doesn't leave much time to think about it when you actually get scared. Also! I'd reccomend watching it reading the comments if you don't mind too many spoilers, it helps with interpretation and keeps you calmer yk. (Ugh sorry i keep writing big ass essays but i can't help it lols)

with all due respect I feel like you overstate how scary stuff is, yes his character design is good but I wouldn't call it scary and I find it funny how a lot of overused horror tropes are being mentioned and made fun of whilst still using a lot of other ones, like 666 and stopping the music when something supposedly scary is being mentioned. don't get me wrong he is still very talented and I know that this comment will not make a difference if he continues his serie or not and neither should it. I know he likes old campy horror films and that's kind of how I see this serie, a lot of passion and talent, but just not for me, but there is a audience that highly appreciate his effort and that's the important thing TLDR, it's really well made but I feel like you overstate how good it is.

I have some experience with mental hospitals and I can see why mental hospitals are seen the way they are, and it can get kind of intense. But, to me at least, they were honestly better than my personal life (with a few moments being exceptions). Idk if that says more about the hospitals or my personal life, but my point is, I get why they're always depicted as scary, but they're usually not that bad

Yea! Most of the 'scary' nature of mental hospitals come from negligence and misconduct. I was supposed to go to one recently but i live in Brasil and.... well, you could say that we got the french methods until like, the late 90's and i still get very apprehensive. There's a full documentary of something that happened not even two hours away from my town by car about this type of negligence. :v

The only good analog horror I like is "Junius B" because it's a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and not "30 minutes of slideshows with distorted Jerma face". There's characters, themes, locations, stands, lore. It's not like they took a screenshot of JoJo and added scary music. It's weird and surreal, and there's no deadair so im not wasting 15 minutes on bullshit lmaooo. Virtually nobody knows about it tho and I don't wanna gatekeep. The first few videos are generic (for story reasons) but you get to "the beginning before the start" and it becomes it's own thing. The videos are short but. I like not having to watch 16 videos that're all 30 minutes. For the most part, Junius B has it's own soundtrack but does use some distorted and muffled midwest emo and trap songs occasionally. But for the most part, it's an original OST

Also the scene where Alex is walking down the hallway to room 66, i was genuinely on edge and suspenseful, its a feeling ive only gotten once before with the film skinamarink. Here's something odd I learned with the analog horror that YOU didn't! We know that Officer Kruger had a son named Klaus, but more cultured Pastra fans will understand what later happened to Klaus. They will understand that Officer Kruger's son is eventually the victim of a Veldigun who takes his own name and uses it as his own. Thus creating the monstrous mouse Klaus.

I love the detail of when we see Winfrey we hear the woman Alex talked to saying "Help Me". I interpret it in multiple ways, Winfrey could've been using her voice to ask for help, try to gain sympathy, or to let Alex (and us) know that the woman is now gone and he's repeating her last words to Alex. BUT HEY! THAT'S JUST A THEORY-

1:27:46 while I do agree I believe that issue only seemed to arise because the Mandela catalogue was on of the big pioneers of the desaturated, dusty feel of most analog horror productions to date, frankly it’s just not nearly as immersive as the full, bright and visceral colors of projects like DOAI I believe it has its own strengths to it, supernatural horror as its stands can benefit a lot from the grays and black that engulf most of the environments in TMC as most people are afraid of the dark, or rather, what’s IN the dark. Now maybe I’m bias because I love the Mandela catalogue and it’s definitely affected my taste in horror media, but it doesn’t really *scare* me. Like you’ve said stuff like DOAI utilizes it’s bright and vibrant palette to its advantage, wether it be to add to the environment scare (for example the lankman asylum is bathed in deep, bloody reds the really get under your skin) and it’s stuff like that that really fucking freaks me out. it invokes a primal horror I don’t feel very often, where as stuff like TMC (Sorry for using that as my main drawing point) relies on the audiences sense of unease, the uncanny valley is an MVP considering the trope of tall, almost human monsters that have taken over the genre. Stuff like the Mandela catalogue leaves me filled with anxiety, and dread long term. Whereas DOAI leaves me terrified, but not anxious, I don’t stay up at night because of it yk? Instead it’s more an an in the moment kind of thing, the kind of horror where I can walk away from it without long term effects, but I am extremely compelled to admire the incredible artistry of the series, how the soundtrack and the environments play into the suspense leading up to the big reveal. I feel most analog horror projects have become more character driven than horror driven, which I don’t mind but if I’m looking to get SCARED I probably wouldn’t go watch something like the walten files. But DOAI is very overall plot driven you don’t have many characters to focus on so you really get to absorb all it has to offer. Sorry the comment is so long or if I sound like a broken record, I’m not good at putting my thoughts to words but if you read this long uhh have some watermelon 🍉 Edit: also I have to say I love videos like these so much, I am a big fat coward who can’t watch horror content myself most of the time because I’ve had anxiety issues my whole life so they really help me out! But I’m getting better at coming to my own conclusions and making my own theories without having to have people outright tell me the connections first though lol
