iCongratulations for 258 hours!!!! Keep it going!!! I also use dreaming Spanish and found that I learn the most when I can find videos that are interesting rather than the level. I also read out loud transcripts of other podcasts and that helps a lot. I have been learning for about 3-1/2 years and probably have another 3 years before I will be happy with my conversational skills. I originally thought I would be fluent I. A year or two but for me that would not be possible as that would require near total immersion. Regardless, it is a super fun activity that I work on almost daily.

Congrats, people including myself forget that it's a language we're learning and it takes time. Even someone like me that grew up with bilingual parents in Spanish has taken a long time. I'm at a real advance level and still working on my Spanish. Over the years I've learned it's OK to take time on the learning process, build emotional connections with the language.

@@8possibilities I finally consider myself a high level beginner after 5 years on and off learning this complex language. Now that I can see the progress, the goal is to become intermediate o more conversational by the end of summer 2024. I study by learning spanish ballads, listen and repeat with different Ytube channels and spanish subtitles on movies. Being stuck on too much grammar does not work for me. Keep up the journey.

Good job. I have also gone back to more basic stuff. I'm now doing 50/50 with dreaming Spanish and other stuff (mostly travel vloggers). Because I was understanding a good bit, I was moving away from dreaming Spanish, but I realized I still have so much basics to learn. And, I don't know if I just have now 'made friends' with the dreaming Spanish crew but I feel like the content is getting better and better. At the start I struggled to motivate myself to watch beginner videos. Now, it's not so hard.

Congratulations on your journey! I use a combination of Duolingo, Dreaming Spanish, and other KZread videos and podcasts that are in Spanish. At the higher levels, Duolingo is completely in Spanish. You learn Spanish in Spanish. However, I still believe that comprehensible input is the thing that has increased my comprehension the most, so I spend more time on that. I have a daily goal of 2 hours on the Dreaming Spanish website. I do count Duolingo in my input time, but I spend a maximum amount of 40 minutes using Duolingo and the other hour and 20 minutes with watching videos and listening to podcasts, so my listening exposure (comprehensible input) is always greater than my Duolingo time. I find this to be a useful combination, and I find that I encounter the words and phrases that I learned from Duolingo in the rest of my time while listening and vice versa. It really helps to reinforce those connections.

@@8possibilities I watch videos on KZread on the channel Español con Juan. He has several videos where he is making a fool of himself and just being crazy, but in a good way. He knows how to make me laugh, which I find helpful to the learning process as it keeps me entertained. I mean he'll make a "phonecall" using a shoe as a phone. Then, you get to hear a more serious side of him in his podcasts by the same name (Español con Juan). I use Google podcasts, but I'm sure it's on other podcast platforms as well. Keep in mind that his podcasts seem to be a bit more advanced than his content on KZread and he's usually talking about more serious topics than on his KZread channel. I also watch How to Spanish, which is a podcast, but on KZread. They are a married couple from Mexico. I think an intermediate level is good enough to understand most of what they are saying. Besides the Dreaming Spanish KZread channel and website, these are the podcasts I listen to the most.

I really appreciate your commentary and your insights. I have to smile, because I see you're developing quite a group of followers Your journey on many levels is something we all, as DS learners can relate to. I was taking a month off, as my wife was quite ill and in the hospital and I had been distracted and unable to focus on my DS time. . I am finding it is not taking me very long to catch up.now as I stagger onward once again. Your KZread posts are a good motivator for me and they remind me that using DS is the focal point for learning. Its is ok to use other mediums , but I want to do so less and use DS more. . Thank you for all of your efforts in helping us all keep a healthy perspective as we learn. Let us stay the course.

Way to go for one year! It made me wonder when I started consistently using DS. I guess it looks like January is 1 year for me. I think looking at others is helpful for inspiration, but it's a problem when we try to say we aren't good enough or as fast as others. I think the patience and the slow growth over time with DS has helped me build patience in other areas as well. I know exactly how you feel with wanting to be there yesterday! I have a new job and it's really hard. But I see others who have been working there 10 or 20 years and how amazing they are and I use it as inspiration that I will get there one day, but it won't be today or probably even this year, but I can make steady progress in the right direction as long as I don't give up.

That's good progress in terms of hours of comprehensible input. I only started learning Spanish 3 months ago, and according to my stats (different language learning platform), I've put in just under 60 hours (listening & reading time). That speed thing is a strange experience, when using this method. As long as all words are known, the speed becomes completely irrelevant. A few new words and I'm lost for several sentences afterwards while trying to recover and get back on track, but still. The speed immunity is of course natural, as all work is being done by the same "translate sounds into concepts"-module in the brain that has been doing its thing for decades. So sometimes faster speaker is almost easier to understand, because then my "translate words between languages and consider inflections and whatnot"-module immediately gives up and hands things over to the correct part of the brain. At least that's what it feels like.
