Музыка

Tonight is the start of Dream Theater Week! i react to Metropolis pt2 this week and tonight we start off with tracks 1,2 and 3 from the album which are Regression, Overture 1928 and Strange De ja Vu
I'm already concentrating so much on the story, i feel like im forgetting the music sometimes and i really hope i figure out what the story is saying by the end of the week! Loving it so far though! typical DT (from what ive heard of them anyway) and im digging the beginning of this album!

Fun Fact: The hypnotherapist is voiced by Terry Brown, the producer of the second to ninth Rush albums.

Oh my boy Tommy you're in a for a treat. 😊😊 SFAM might not have an original story, but the way they tell it, often with lyrics but other times just through the music, with motifs and juxtaposition of musical ideas is pure genius.

I love this album! I first heard it while I was in AIT for the ARMY. I would listen to it every night before lights out. It is a great story and the music is so great. I have also seen them play this in it's entirety live and it was awesome!

I won't spoil anything, but I do have to say wow. You are on the right track with the way you're interpreting the lyrics. It took me a little bit to figure it out but keep on that path and by mid album you'll get it

This is my favorite concept album, DT’s best album imo. Haven’t listened to this in years so this is bringing back some pleasant memories from when I first listened to it.Looking forward to your analysis this week 👍🏻

I'm SO THRILLED that you've chosen to do this!! I'm going to follow the lead of the other comments and not spoil the story...yet. I will point out that the actual lyric was "I see a girl in the mirror," and that description is very important. One other note..."the Sleeper" is also a character. I will say no more for now...looking forward to seeing you discover this epic album as you go.

I'm glad that your doing this album. Nearly all reaction channels avoid it, I think it's because they are put off by concept records. Your questions will be answered by the end. Please enjoy as this is a complex and deep concept album.

From what I know, this album was basically their passion project that they were able to write after achieving some radio success in the 2 prior albums. Falling into Infinity was their most radio friendly album and had a lot of commercial influence by their managers etc. I still think it is an incredible album, with what they were still able to get away with. This album also has some of the best cut songs that never made it onto an album such as "Raise the Knife" which is arguably one of their most proggy songs. And Images and Words was the album that really exploded their fanbase and is the album with Scenes from a Memory Pt.1. Under a Glass Moon is a must listen from I&W if not the whole album.

Scenes from a Memory is similar to Rush's 2112 in some way. Both albums were written in a do or die mood

Damn, massive respect to you! You didn't have to do this but this is a gem of a series for any serious fan of prog music. It's great to see such an honest and musically-aware perspective from someone who takes music and lyrics seriously and is open minded and interested in searching for answers. Thank you so much for sharing! On a completely different note, may I suggest you check out Jacob Collier's Tiny Desk Concert (either one, he's got two), or his video "Moon River" (one of his masterpieces, won a grammy for best jazz a capella arrangement if I remember correctly). And/or anything by Dirty Loops (maybe "Next To You"). I promise you will not be disappointed for a single second.

I would tell the story but I dont wanna spoil 😅 I honestly think that after listening to fifth track (Fatal Tragedy) you'll get the main idea and what the story is about.

You are doing very well right now with your thoughts on where this album goes... this is a very intricate story... I love that you are listening to it.... one of my favorite concept albums of all time.

An Overture in music sets up the musical themes you will hear throughout the production. So, there's no real story-moving meaning behind the track.

The melodies, riffs and musical themes of the original track Metropolis pt. 1 from Images & Words are being spread throughout this album so it's interesting to see you listen to them kinda backwards. I was not really fond of the idea of using an old song as a basis for a whole new album (I absolutely love Metropolis pt 1).

Ayreon week would be nice, with one of the two live concerts. Or the album: into the electric castle. I love Dream Theater. I’m a big fan of long songs with lots if transitions and solos: rogressive rock and metal. The intro of this song immediately reminds me of Porcupine Tree with the ‘album’: Voyage 34, the complete trip. I personally prefer live versions of songs but albums are the basis. I almost never like albums at first listen; they have to grow on me and some never will. This album is a good one.

i HIGHLY reccoment you to check at least some songs in the live version! The one called Fatal Tragedy has a brand new live version with a mix good as F! Do Finally Free (the last scene) live too, and of couse, The Dance of Eternity! Im pretty sure the people here will agree!

Two of the heavy prog bands I like the most are Dream Theater and Symphony X. DT veers more towards 'traditional' progrock in the vein of Genesis, Jethro Tull and Yes, while Symphony X have a thrash-metal basis, especially in more recent years. I do like singer Russell Allen from Symphony X way, way more than James LaBrie. Allen's voice is more powerfull, fuller, Deeper, more versatile. If you like more heavy prog stuff, don't forego bands like Porcupine Tree, Adagio and Riverside. Cheerio.

I think the more "traditional" prog rock than DT are The Flower Kings, Spock's Beard, The Tangent and Transatlantic. The 90's pioneer heavy prog are DT, Fates Warning, Watch Tower, Symphony X, Pain of Salvation and Shadow Gallery. IMHO
