ABBA donated 50% of the royalties for Chiquitita to UNICEF (the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) from 1979 to 2014. In 2014 they decided that 100% of royalties for this song should go to UNICEF. As of September 2021, UNICEF had received $4.8 million from the royalties of this song to help little girls (Chiquititas) and boys all over the world.

This video has brought me to tears. I think the goodness in these two lovely men and their appreciation for a song and time of relative innocence has provoked my realisation of just how evil and dark the world has become in the last decade or so. I wish all children today could have the happy innocent childhood I was blessed to have and God bless ABBA for shining a light that will never dim.

The fact that ABBA wrote this song in the 70's and the fact that they shared the royalties with UNICEF, probes that the world was as sad and evil as now. The only difference is nowadays we have 8.000.000.000 people on Earth, and the number of children suffering from abuses is larger than then. That's all. Hunger, rape, violence, war, death... are things that Chiquititas of today share with Chiquititas of all times, including the 70's and 80's.

A funny anecdote from Finland: my father worked a lot of his life abroad, mostly in South America and the Caribbean region. In most countries few people knew there was such a place as Finland - and if they knew, they seldom knew where this odd country was. So it was much easier to just say "I come from ABBA:s neighbor country...."

It's important to remember that "old music" is maybe the 1% that survives over time. The best of the best. There are lots of good new music too. But it's much harder to filter between good/bad. And it's many times not the best-selling new music that will end up best-selling oldie goldie music.

Okay, okay, okay, to have better understanding, “Chiquitita” is not referring to a little child, it’s referring to a full grown woman… I’ll explain… “chiquitita” could refer to a child, but, the right way it’s (Chiquita) Spanish word… Chiquitita, means, very little (female) Chiquita, means, little (female) Chiquitita = baby, babe (full grown female) man being charming, loving, caring, affectionate to her. Now, listening to the words, will make more sense.

@@MsJohnnycashHowever, it's one of those song lyrics that you can ADAPT to other situations and give it more scope than its original scope. By the way, in the eastern region of my country, Bolivia, we usually say "chiquitita" instead of "chiquita" to refer to a little or small girl or thing and that's why the title of this song always sounded very familiar to us.

Who knew I would have so much in common with elderly Tribesmen from the other side of the world in a country so far away and different than mine. Fascinating that humans really are very similar when it comes to every day life and reactions, when no government or other group in power with all their agendas try to split us apart, for the sake of greed and money, hate and fear.

I watched this having heard Chiquita many times but not really understanding it was about a girl. I started crying once I knew thinking about my daughter suffering from anorexia who was mad at me over something and refusing to go to bed. I sent her the lyrics and it could be the start of something good. This is such a great way to learn about songs

  • @LusciousTwinkle

Start listening.... Stop trying to make her feel things. The therapists won't tell you this maybe but anorexia is about taking control in a life where you feel little control. That fact you said she was "mad at you over something" but were quite happy to share that she has anorexia. What was she mad about? Go and talk to her about it. Discuss how you can move forward. I bring s warning. My mother used to do things like this. It may seem innocent... The lyrics of a song. To me it was her not caring what was actually IN my mind.... Just trying to put things there that SHE approved of. I have recovered from AN. I have also not spoken to my mother in 10 years.

If you were only writing nice things about music i would never have said anything. You weren't. You were talking about your daughter who is angry with you.... That a piece of music that YOU liked might in some way affect her. There are REASONS behind AN. It is a disease sure, but it is caused by trauma through lack of choice and control in ones life and through a feeling of loss of self. If you are blaming all your daughters negative emotions towards you on her illness you will never get anywhere. You have never once indicated that you want to hear her... Your language... That shes mad at you over "something" Most people want to know why a loved one is mad at them... I speak from first person experience. Send all the pretty tunes you want... My sister and I listened to ABBA over and over when we were kids - bought new albums together with any Christmas or birthday money we received. Gave us joy through a difficult childhood as our mother struggled with mental illness and depression and eventually committed suicide in 1980, when I was 11. Even now, their music is uplifting since I have restarted listening after a hiatus. Though I do remember becoming reacquainted in my 20’s when another favourite band, Erasure put out “Abba-esque.” Then of course that helped kick start Mamma Mia! I got her tickets to that show when we lived in Toronto for her birthday. Now my favourite songs are, “Eagle” and “Day before you came.”

i'm so glad to see you for first time with a great reaction to ABBA songs several things to say about "Chiquitita" (1979) Chiquitita" means 'little girl' (with affection) in spanish And the melody have a spanish tune, specialy by the acustic guitar But the center is the wonderful piano, like almost all ABBA songs "Chiquitita" is a beautiful song, it has hopeful lyrics, a melody that starts very soft with the blonde Agnetha's solo, then grows and explodes in a powerful chorus; Agnetha & Frida's vocal harmonies are of excellence It allows us to check how excellent singers Agnetha & Frida are and what harmonies of excellence they achieve. It stands out especially when they stretch the monosyllables with great quality and beauty "Chiquitita" was premiered especially for the UNICEF Concert (January 9, 1979, just 44 years ago!) and its royalties are eternal for UNICEF These is an official video filmed in Swizterland 1979 (ABBA goes for a TV Special) It's the only promotional video that ABBA made without Sweden "Chiquitita" was ABBA's greatest success in Latin America, that prompted ABBA to record it in Spanish, and its success was so extraordinary that in the following year ABBA recorded a full album with their best songs entirely in Spanish ("Chiquitita" in Spanish is the biggest ABBA hit in My country Argentina) Chiquitita" is in the Top 3 of all ABBA worldwide biggest hits, with 'Dancing Queen" and "Fernando", and it's a fantastic Masterpiece I hope to see you soon with more ABBA songs My best wishes from Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷 South América
