Of late, I agree with you. But back in DT's earlier, hairier days, he was consistently amazing. Some of his craziest highs were from live performances back then.

Watch how when he gets around 10:45, the crowd is clapping along with him, then suddenly they are like "what?" cause the beat is still there, but the timing that they are clapping to doesn't fit what he's playing. Then he just keeps going to where each one of his limbs are in a different time signature. Try it yourself. Tap your hand doing 1-2-3-4 and repeat. Then, once you have that down, tap 1-2-3-4-5 with your other hand, to where they both start on 1 and repeat at the same time.

Dream Theater drum solos are turning into a bit of a Joey Jordison affair. The flair of MP isn't there but Mangini is unbelievable in his own way. The speed of that guy is mind blowing.

Bueno, tal vez los que somos bateristas y entendemos lo que cada uno de los dos toca, sabe que mangini es por mucho mas avanzado, lo que se entiende es que los fans extrañen ese sonido de portnoy, aveces (aunque no lo crean los die-hard-fans) con cosas muy sencillas que tocaba las hacia sonar muy bien y encajaba bien con DT, lo que hace mangini es de un nivel de complejidad por mucho mayor, per no es un sonido al que esten acostumbrados los fans. creative, musical, portnoy... who plays "4 on the snare, 2 on bass drum, 4 on the tom, 2 on the bass drum" and so on, always and everywhere, a ballad or a speed song.. a drummer who did the most difficult song "dance of eternity" and 14 years old guys on you tube plays it, and MM learned it in a couple of days.. he directed the DT ship for 20 plus years, and that's his lucky! without DT, couldn't never exist a portnoy.. MM build himself a style and become famous without a band, think about it!
