This song stems from an actual experience John Petrucci had while touring Italy. He met the titular count, and was invited to his estate for a historical tour. The count introduced him to his brother who he told Petrucci was the inspiration for Hannibal Lector, then lead him on a tour of the estate showing him a shrine with a mummified saint and telling him the story of the soldiers in the wine. John gets paranoid and kinda freaks out, thinking he’s about to be killed and eaten. XD A terrible misunderstanding, and quickly defused by the count, who by all accounts is actually a very pleasant gentleman. A bit of a goofy story, but damn if it didn’t give birth to a fantastic piece of music. This song blew my mind the first time I heard it, and still gives me chills to this day.

This is the closest we’ll ever get to seeing Louis C.K. reacting to dream theater

This is the first song I listened from Black Clouds & Silver Linings (I used to have the bad habit of not listening to an album songs in order). It's one of my favorite songs from them, that ending gets me everytime. Since you've been reacting to Dream Theater's long songs, I'd recommend you Illumination Theory.

The instrumentation in the last section of this makes up for any of the cheesey lyrics in the first half haha. It's not a concept album. Although a funny tidbit about this album is that every song is based off of something that the band members have gone through, or are reality based, and it was a direct response to people being critical that their previous album Systematic Chaos, was too fantasy based.

You just found you a new subscriber. This song is so awesome. Dream theater is my favorite band. I love that you’re doing this dying soul next. If you haven’t already I would love you to do illumination theory especially the live at the Boston opera House version with a full orchestra

I'm really just getting started on them. Probably won't do any of the live stuff for awhile because I like to hear the studio versions first. But I'll be doing a bunch. Thanks!

Fantastic! For a great one also on this album you should check out the shattered fortress. But let me just tell you that is part of a set of songs called the 12 step suite. It’s about the drummer Mike Portnoy‘s alcoholism and his journey. There’s five songs in it. There’s the root of all evil on the Octavarium album. Then there’s the glass prison off of 6° of inner turbulence. Then there’s this dying soul off of train of thought which I know you’re doing next. Then there’s repentance off of systematic chaos and then ending with the shattered fortress on Black clouds And silver linings

Try “The Great Debate”. Or if you’re up for it, 6 degrees disc 2 (1 song split up). It’s a 42 minute masterpiece about different mental diseases.

It’s not called the Great Debate, that is on disc 1. You are referring to “Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.” That is a 42 minute masterpiece. It’s as good as it gets in all of music.

@@FryeGuy29 He said "6 degrees" so I'm pretty sure he referenced it mostly correctly, especially since he said "disk 2" The Great Debate is just another song he was referencing. Check the comment again.

They tried to pull a YES with that slow part but it's just a knockout pill. Lots of musical changes for sure but I don't think you can call them transitions when they just abruptly change. The true story is definitely worth reading about and improves the enjoyment of the song very much. So yeah aside from the slow part and the thrash voice I enjoyed it very much.

I'm not a big fan of this song but it does have the best intro DT has ever done. Unfortunately from when James starts singing onwards, the song falls apart. It doesn't match the magnificence of the first 4 and half minutes of the intro.
