JP really brought it in honor of Howard Portnoy. Besides being Mike's dad, he also gave Dream Theater their name. I can't think of a better tribute.

Beautiful but very emotional for me. I had it played at my late son’s funeral 6 years ago. He was a big Dream Theater fan and played drums in his own band. I miss him so badly.

The little lick at 2:47 to about 2:53 is the best part of the solo for me. It feels like you finally cross over that horizon and you realize there is a new chapter in life filled with hope and healing. So simple and perfectly timed.

I had to check if that was the part that most impressed me and yep, it was. For me the genius of that part is the surprise, the dribble; it starts by following the melody, then suddenly become ssomething else. It's like an trained animal that seems certain to attack its target, but when he realizes that the leash is not on his neck anymore, he finally choose his own direction and run freely, jubilous for his so long wanted freedom.

For 10 years I keep returning to this solo, this magnificent performance. Gods, this is truly next level. 11/10.

Don't waste your time watching other covers. This is the real thing!

That's actually what I thought...

I remember my mom telling me about this song a long time ago.. My older brother, who's the reason for my interest in metal and songwriting, used to sit in his room, trying to learn this solo. This was years before I picked up the guitar which I did when I was 10yo (21yo now). My mom used to stand behind the door and just listen, and she would actually cry. I love the energy, the sound, the emotions in metal, (and rock ofc). I love genres like bluegrass, edm, punk, jazz, classical, hip-hop, funk, folk, blues, (irrelevant, sry haha) etc. but no matter how much I enjoy certain genres and their unique ways of expressing emotions and beautiful sounds, be it the entire sound image of a song or just the phrasing of a rythm guitar, nothing beats the intensity of a beautiful melody. Dream Theater has certainly been a huge inspiriation in my life. I'm planning on releasing songs, but I just love listening to my own stuff haha. It's music for the music.

I am a huge fan of classical music and really feel that it is under appreciated in our modern society. I am also a huge fan of heavy metal, so to me this is a gift from heaven! I love it!!!

It is one of my favorite solos aswell. I learned the first part of the solo and then I gave up quite some time ago. This solo is insanely hard to play cleanly. If you want to play it as good as the guy in the video, and if you're somewhat decent at playing guitar (being able to play simple/intermediate solos and a little sweep picking), you have to practice for atleast half a year, atleast 1-2 hours every day. And that is of course if you're familiar with sweep picking. If not, add another 6 months because this song is full of those sections.. Which is the main part why it's so hard to play it clean. But with enough effort put into it I'm sure you will be able to play this one day! And so will I, hopefully :)

I’m a drummer but I think the most beatiful and harmonic guitar solo is this music. It’s so strong and deeper at the same time… congrats! You’ve nailed it!

I first heard this in 2015 or 2016, and it's currently 2022 and I still come back to it.

Agreed, so much feeling in this one. And this cover is just unbelievable. That said, Bombay Vindaloo (Live at the Marquee version) holds a very special place in my heart.

John Petrucci is my favoutite guitarist. There are a few differences between the original version and Viossy's one, but I'd never thought that someone can play a Petrucci-solo in some parts better than Petrucci. Dr. Viossy can! Awesome ideas, and fantastic performance!

One of my favourite pieces of music on KZread. Also one of the best pieces of music that I have ever heard (so far)👍 Philistine that I am; only heard the song this beautiful sound is based on for the first time the other day - the message of the lyrics really shine through on Dr Viossy's guitar. Couldn't believe how well the message is communicated through what is magnificently played here👍

HAFSAOUI Billel, I disagree completely. "Talent" is as real as hard work. Saying there is no such thing as talent is blaming the many millions of people who daily toil at their craft, never to reach great heights. There is immense variation in individual humans ability to accomplish a variety of skills and that plays a huge role in their capability when coupled with practice. Practice does not make perfect, perfect practice plus talent makes perfect.

No need. Just practice a lot and be determined and disciplined. This guy sacrificed nights out in the pub on the weekends in order to be this good for many, many years. Guys like this typically will put guitar above all other social events or personal lives. That's why geniuses like Beethoven died alone. Music is the only thing they did.

nicklevy I hear what you're saying, but I again will say simply that if a person wants it, they'll achieve it. Regardless. Often it is the case of a person not born with the given skill who overcomes the one born with the skill, simply because they work harder and want it more.

9 years later, still the best on KZread. I'd love to see JP's reaction to this (and Portnoy's too given the song), it's got so much emotion, shows off how beautiful metal can be and really gives the viewer an idea of the virtuosity needed to perform this at this level. 10/10 will watch again, and again
