The recording is a type of concept album wherein the five songs which comprise the first disc explore different themes of lifetime struggle, such as alcoholism, loss of faith, self-isolation, sanctity of life and death. The sixth song-a 42-minute piece occupying the second disc, separated into eight tracks-explores the stories of six individuals suffering from various mental illnesses.

That weird part you thought was a keyboard was Petrucci learning to play his guitar solo backwards and then reversing it again.

One of my favorites and go-to songs of SDOIT actually. Lyrically I always thought Misunderstood was a fairly simple concept about being isolated and alone despite having celebrity type status and popularity. People follow you and even worship you, yet you don't really know any of them and might feel even more alone. It seems to fit a lot of people, but also has some religious overtones so I assume it's written specifically about a religious leader of sorts. Nowadays it actually makes me think of Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell, RIP.

Interesting. Our favourites were the same until this song. Misunderstood is one of my favourite DT songs, because of its experimentalism :P

There was a lot of people that said I needed to listen to it a few more times. They said it was one that grew on you. So, that's what I'm going to do. Don't count it out yet.

The lyrics are about religious figurehead. They really explored and experiment with the sound here and on this album as a whole. Its a grower, maybe you need a couple more listens. It features a guitar solo that Petrucci wrote, then decided to play in reverse, only to decide to reverse it again, which is how it's played in the track (since you were wondering if the solo is played on keyboards, its not its all Petrucci)

@Brady Laws Petrucci himself stated it was about religious figurehead. Blind Faith is James's questions about religion. Disappear is a couple, one of them dies. The Great Debate is about stem cells. Only SDoIT is about mental illnesses basically.

The last 2 concept albums I know of is Dream Theater (The Astonishing) and Rush (Clockwork Angels)...in case you don't know Rush was a huge influence on several Dream Theater members, especially John Myung and John Petrucci. I don't know if you heard of Rush, who recently retired after 40+ years, they consist of Neil Peart (drummer/main lyricist), Geddy Lee (bassist/synths/vocals), and Alex Lifeson (guitarist) and all three are considered master musicians at their respective instruments. I recommend you start off with Rush "YYZ" live in Rio, just to get initially started with them and of course Rush has plenty of concept songs such as The Necromancer, Fountain of Lamnenth, Cygnus X-1 Book 1 and 2, and their most famous is 2112.

If you'd like some new bands to react to sometime, I recommend OSI. Kevin Moore and Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater are in it. Head is a good song to try. Or check out Porcupine Tree. Another top notch prog band. Shallow is a song from them I really enjoy.

There is a bunch on my list, this included but I haven't had any time to do miscellaneous songs because of how chaotic life is right now. It's a struggle even keeping the set days for bands that I have.

This is more like eating pizza in Italy, rating it with 8, calling it not the best pizza in the world but not trash also just because you like the pizza at the fast food.

I rate things based on a variety of reasons, not just favoritism or lack thereof. Technical ability, diversity of sound, how well it's able to relay its message, and other factors. Just because I like or don't like a song doesn't mean I'm going to give it the highest rating or lowest rating. If I can't remain objective I shouldn't have a channel.
