The girl who accused Dream's friend saying "I was freshly 18" was the first sign that something was wrong about the whole thing lol. Her video seemed super rehearsed and everything but I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt that she was scared but no regular person would say "freshly 18" lol. "I was only 18" or "I'd jsut turned 18" are the regular sane people terms, "freshly 18" sounds like a Sasha Grey video title from 2008 ffs

Something important to note is that the George canceling was bullshit. The girl in question was 18, lied that she was 21, and went to a drinking party. Both she and George were drunk, and they both consensually cuddled. It was only a week after the party that she tried to wield her age as if she weren't an adult. Ofc the audience wants to relate to the youtuber. "Same look" doesnt mean "i relate". I disagree with him because he puts those 2 together like cause and effect. There could be different factors at play. A big one for example is the mystery is gone. Asmongold even said that his vieuwership was already falling before he took the mask off. I agree, I think however that communicating that is an important step in avoiding a lot of toxicity. Pewdiepie was quite honest about the direction he was going, and communicated that he was less interested in making frequent content anymore, but would keep in touch. I think his relation with his community is a pretty good example, where it graduated from the sort of daily active friend you go out with to more of an old friend you see a couple times a year. You threatening to break up with somebody isn't a power dynamic issue because they have the same power in the relationship. Nah, it wasn't him showing his face that's the issue, it's definitely the fact that he did a face reveal and made it a whole thing. It's weird and creepy and keeps peoples mind stuck on your face. "Peekaboo, look it's me, a HUMAN, hehehehe" and his eyes are all wide and IDK man it's weird. Like yea, we know dude... stop being fucking weird about it. It also makes being in a game and not showing your face a weird thing when in reality it isn't, making this face reveal some BIG THING, it just gives everyone a bad vibe. It's pretty unhinged tbh. Like Asmon said, it's attention seeking too. If he had just revealed his face without announcing it or giving a fuck, like it's just another day without addressing it, nobody would have gave a fuck. Some parasocial weirdos would have talked about it for a couple weeks and people would have stopped hearing or thinking about it. It's almost as if he was hiding and this reveal thing was a projection of his guilt combo'd with his awkwardness that he had which was his reason for wearing it. Thing about being awkward, stop paying attention to it and it stops mattering. Still exists, just doesn't count for anything, no one gives a shit.
The problem wasn't the face reveal, I think. The problem is he basically decided to stop doing the thing that made him famous, and subsequently not replace it with anything meaningful. The amount of content that he produced dropped off a cliff, and people stopped being interested. If Dream had kept making content regularly, the face reveal would have just been a controversial blip that everybody forgot about in a few months. The fact that he just stopped doing what he was famous for and tried to freaking make music is what hurt his career so badly. Frankly, he could still make it back, I think, if he returned to what made him big in the first place. The problem is entirely self inflicted.

In another way, it's a kind of stereotyping. It also has to be said that teens love to imitate adults and being "smart"; rejecting kids stuff.
Dream's situation is the opposite of Disguised Toast. Toast's face reveal was an accident but was just laughed off and then he did the reveal later and became more powerful.
The thing that people disagreed with about Asmon's take on watching people who were their age and people saying "No?" was not people saying "People don't relate with people the same age." Of course they do, it's your own age demographic. You have the most to relate to. They were referring to like the golden age of KZread when they were kids, like I was when I first started watching KZread. I watched Chuggaconroy, Tobuscus, Smosh, just to name a few, and I was like 12 years old. I don't think there were ANY child KZreadrs I would watch on the platform when I myself was a child.

All the examples people give were in like their late teens or early 20s, you're just proving Asmons point. Tobuscus looked and behaved like a 16 year old for the duration of his relevancy and the Smosh guys looked and acted really young too in their hayday. Asmon didn't really say that kids wanna watch youtubers that are their age, but they don't want to watch mature, bearded men. When watching Smosh as a kid I remember thinking ''they are pretty much the same as me, just a few years older'' but today Smosh looks like a couple of hipsters that you would see enter a LA coffeeshop with their baby carried in their baby backpack, and I don't think I would have watched them as a kid. I can't think of any youtube personalities I followed when I was younger that were 30+ and mature in their apperance and behaviour.

@@Regarded69 I liked Chuggaconroy because at the time he was doing a Wind Waker playthrough and I was in love with the Wind Waker. He also did some Super Mario Sunshine and I also loved that game at the time but we'd sold our console so we couldn't play it anymore. I liked Tobuscus because of the Literals, especially of games that I liked. Smosh similar story, their Pokemon intro theme dub was hilarious at the time and still damn funny to me today. It's not because they were "acting like kids," (that's a major stretch) it's because they had video game content as a part of their skits that I found the most relevant and entertaining to me.
kids always want to look up to and hang out with people older than them. Main reason why most of the Heroes in fiction have been in their 20-30's albeit not many older than forty, while the teen and child heroes and characters usually had a place in the roster but were often seen as annoying or weren't as popular, even though children and teenagers were the main audience. Everyone from that time talk about cheetara, liono, etc, but I don't here many people saying Wiley Kat and Wiley Kit were their favorite characters in thunder cats. Then you can say "well that's fiction that's different idiot." But same is pretty true from every hobby/interest that was popular, skateboarding, football, basketball, music, outside of the age of boy bands, the "stars" were always around 20's to 30's and the kids flocked to them. I think the main takeaway is that the age limit is "younger than my parents, but older than myself, and successful."

The whole argument that kids want to watch people around their age is totally wrong just based on how we all grew up. Even in the minecraft community, SkyDoesMinecraft, Deadlox, DanTDM, Yogscast, all of them were way older. Rhett and Link, Smosh, you can keep giving all these examples of content creators that were extremely older than what we were but we watched them. Tobuscus, Aviator Gaming and his gang, I can keep giving a fuck ton of examples of 20 somethings who a bunch of early to mid teens watched. And based on that argument alone, they should be relating to someone younger.

Ok this is legitematly so stupid. SunnyV is treating it as if Dream is somehow trying desperatly to recapture the glory days and get back to the old numbers but failing to do so yet for me it is pretty clear that the guy at this point just moved on from doing content and isnt really involved with it anymore. As Asmon mentioned last time he streamed half a year ago and within the last year he posted on youtube only 4 times. I dont know shit about Dream and I never watched his content but it seems that he grinded like crazy for a few years he managed to hit the perfect wave he made milions from that and is set for life and now he is done with it and moved on to other things in his life. I honestly feel like SunnyV is so obsessed with grinding youtube and getting the most views possible that he cant compute how anyone would ever willingly just quit grinding youtube 24/7 to maybe live their life instead or focus on other ventures. For SunnyV the only explanation why anyone might have fallen off is either because they did something bad and are a bad person or because they are a failure and just cant get the views anymore. He never considers that a dude with over 3bilions views just might not care anymore about getting views. SunnyV needs to chill the fck out. There is more to life than youtube clicks

I always find it funny when Sunny calls people out for being desperate for views when almost all of his videos are him embellishing things to make people seem worse than they actually are
I remember playing a lot of MC when I was in highschool and a lot of the youtubers I watched (In fact most) were grown men playing the game. Age has nothing to do with why these youtubers were watched. Good content was.
5:00 WRONG. Just because you feel that way, it doesn't mean that is the facts or whatever. Young people tend to look up ( maybe not to the really old, like over 50 or so ) since they want to be seen as 'grown ups' themselves. Common Asmond, this is basic societal behaviour/psychology. Like, whereever did you get that insane idea? Yeah, when they're on groups or looking for one, teens/kids do search for the same age people but that doesn't translate to the media they consume... But other than that, the advice he gives at the end is really good and something upcoming streamers/KZreadrs should keep in mind.

He's right that it's easier for kids to relate with one another. But he's wrong that kids want to watch other kids. Kids are very simple when it comes to consuming content. If it makes them laugh, they will most likely watch it regardless if it's a 25 to 30-year-old making that content.

Well it isn’t particularly wrong, though it obviously does not apply to everyone. But most kids do want to see „themselves“ in these scenarios of doing something cool. That is a fact for most kids. It is also a fact though that most kids would also want to imagine being a strong young man/ woman, but that is not them trying to „relate“, but something they then „aspire“ to be. For example,o ver here in Germany, one of the first KZreadrs any of us ever watched 12 years ago was Gronkh who was already in his fourties at the time (I think). Which many people still consider their role model. So while it of course doesn’t apply to every single person, it is the common rule for kids, as it is the case for most of them. So no, he is not really wrong here and neither are you. It‘s just that both is the case, though you may have gotten „admiration“ and „relating“ mixed up here, which is understandable.

They watch slightly older creators who act just like kids.
Trying to claim that every social interaction has a power dynamic, becomes tantamount to saying all interactions are transactional in nature, which is a horrible way to live.
The point about kids watching people their age is ludicrous when the Paul brothers had super young children audiences when they were mid 20s almost 30 now. When i was a kid my favorite KZreadr was Pewdiepie who is 10 years older than me. There is a huge difference between gray hair and an adult. Like having such a hardcore stance telling people to shut the fuck up and they are delusional is the issue. Broadly I think what Asmon is saying is true but like most kids don't watch kids they watch young adults in their early 20s.
I don't think that Dream needs to worry about his career. He's probably so rich that he can retire.
As a girl I can never related to gamer guys with stripper names.
I don’t think it’s the face reveal. It’s the hype + the long stream before the face reveal + all of his friends who saw him made it seem like he looked like a Greek god.

You know what could've been a 200 IQ play for "Dream" brand? While trying to regain anonymity, he should have gotten someone else to become a new Dream and slowly intergrate new content with them. Since everyone were already losing interest, he could fully remove himself from videos by the time people finaly notice change. And the "Not a real DREAM?!" would create new buzz.

It's ridiculous, "everyone were already losing interest" because he stopped producing content everyone was interested in, that's all there is to it. His speedrunner vs hunters series brought him popularity, he thought he could pivot but people really only wanted just more of that.
I don't know anyone when I was 16 that watch people that look their age. I remember us watching donkey and Smosh and game grumps who were all far older. Theres alot of instances where people watched older people then them. Plus kids want to watch adults so they can feel like they're cool and adults too.

hot take about parasocial relationships isn't a hot take - it's the correct take
It's kinda nice to see Asmon fly into a rage so quickly, because it's an acknowledgement of how skewed his perception of the world is, and he doesn't like it being challenged. Almost everyone around my age in high school watched Markiplier, jacksepticeye, PewDiePie, etc. All young adults to middle-aged men at the time, that were at least 5-8 years older than us. KZread and TV programs are an entirely different medium and if Asmon can't accept that, he's the one living in a daydream.

Minecraft golden era of streaming died with Technoblade, Dream popularity was tied to manhunt videos that already got old and his friendly rivalry with techno, MCC and DreamSMP was a thing because of him and as soon he retired because his condition and passed away it was downhill for everyone involved specially for Dream, his face reveal was just a last attempt for a career with RL stuff but he seems lost now.

Minecraft KZread is definitely not declining imo. I think that it’s been getting more popular, especially with SMPs like Hermitcraft. The only decline I can see is the pandemic era MCYT like Dream, but they were already on the decline a couple years ago.
captainspraklez is one of the only minecraft youtubers who are older that young and old still watch. hes one of the OG
I didn't know who Dream was until I saw jokes about him on Urban Rescue Ranch. I've seen the Daft Punk performers without their masks, and this is how I see it. You CAN put the mask back on after a face reveal. You may think you can't, but you can. It's not the same as the cat being out of the bag. It's like wearing a hard hat, or a badge; get to work, wear your hat, and get the job done. I'm not saying Zack is wrong here, everything he's saying isn't just valid, it's true with regard to Dream, because Dream didn't just face reveal, he threw it in the garbage, then got it out later after it had been soiled.
Asmon is dead wrong about Vtubers. Quite a few have shown their face and more and continue to be successful as long as they have an entertaining personality/character persona and remain consistent.
20:20 I argue with my wife about this all the time. "You never think you are wrong" "If you are not giving me any evidence that I am wrong, why tf would I think that I am?" That makes no f*ckin sense! Who walks around thinking they are wrong? I am opem to BE wrong, but no, I will never walk around thinking I am just inherently wrong. 😂

Him doing a face reveal wasn't the reason why he's fallen off. He's fallen off because his public perception is of cringe. People watched him before because he was just a regular dude having fun playing Minecraft and being good at it. Now, with his failed music career, people look at him and remember the time when he cried on stage in front of teenage girls. He could've saved his brand if he kept uploading new videos at a consistent pace--garnering favor with the KZread algorithm, but he didn't.
What they should have done with the George controversy would've been to state what happened, what they knew / didn't know and then shut up about it instead of giving all this liability and gasoline to the crazies.
Man Asmon went crazy on the dude who wrote its hard to be a fan of he’s not uploading. I also want more uploads from some KZreadrs I watch, doesn’t mean I have a relationship with them. It’s like if McDonald’s only started to open once a week, an expectation was set and if you don’t live up to it, deal with the backlash (or at least tell your fans how often should they expect to wait)
Who's Dream?? Never heard of her.
Something to note is that all his controversies and his friend’s controversies definitely did number on him psychologically. He can’t make good content if he’s not happy about making content and subsequently repeating the cycle of controversy after controversy.
03:43 I never stopped enjoying his Manhunt videos, he just started uploading them more and more infrequently. Maybe because of mental health, maybe because he is happy where he is and has enough money. Regardless, if I was his friend I wouldn't want him to live by the numbers, but by what makes him happy. If that means uploading 1 video every few months or every year, and he is financially sustainable in doing that, I would be all for it. As a fan I honestly feel the same way. I want people to be happy, not to be subservient to me. His content wouldn't make me happy if I knew it was motivated by his unhappiness, rather than his happiness, if that makes sense. Same thing for all other content that I like to engage with. 16 minutes in and I'm not getting the reason why we should hate him? He made a bad decision and regretted that, feeling insecure, which is totally relatable. He isn't a good singer but likes to sing regardless, that's most people who like Karaoke, also relatable. Why are we laughing about that, exactly? This is kinda making me second hand depressed, to be honest. If people have weaknesses and are feeling insecure, we should be respectful and understanding, not make fun of them and confront them with their faults every time we get the opportunity and in the most harmful and impactful way possible. SunnyV2 seems almost gleeful as he talks about the ruin of Dream's future career, why is that? I'm open to more facts later in the video about how Dream is some evil monster that we should hate and that deserves this treatment, so far I'm not convinced. Around 27 minutes Asmon is talking about the "attention seeking behavior". I'm assuming this is about the face un-reveal thing that happened. I get his logic here, why people would feel that's distasteful and inauthentic. Personally, I didn't interpret it as content-driven, but rather personally-driven. I'm not sure where but I noticed certain comments here and there talking about how Dream is ugly or fat. I didn't watch the initial face reveal because I wasnt really interested in that, but since I didn't come from a cynical but a more human place, I figured the un-reveal was motivated more by sadness and maybe disillusionment at the sort of feedback that he had gotten since that time. I don't follow any of Dream's other activity outside of KZread, so I have no idea how accurate that is. 34:40 Okay this kind of sucks. Maybe the content has dried up because stupid internet drama like this has driven Dream and his friends apart from one another? Goes to show the importance of principles. I think going back and forth like this is going to lose you a lot of the momentum that you need to continue through times like that. If you truly didn't do anything wrong, and you truly didn't see your friend do anything wrong, you should absolutely not apologize, or turn the backs on each other.
To disagree with Asmongold here, when I was younger the people I watch on KZread were never around my age. Especially during mid 2010s like VanossGaming, Pewdiepie, Markiplier, etc.

Nonsense. Dream stopped producing his most popular series, Speedrunner vs Hunters which every video has 50+M views. That's literally the only reason he's declining in popularity. Just because it coincided with his face reveal is irrelevant.
He doesn't need to be popular anymore. Why would he want to be more popular? He has already made millions, and he has gained enough followers to be able to maintain a lavish lifestyle for the rest of his life. Now he just has to enjoy what he does. He conquered the obstacle of wealth. All that's left is to go on a journey of self discovery, figure out that nothing means anything, and enjoy the rest of his life.

Asmongold just ignorant of the fact the most popular minecraft youtubers when we were kids werr yogscast, dantdm, sky, etc, who were not at all as young as us
Back in school i was watching DSP (don't judge me, i was stupid), Swifty, Athene and Simon and Lewis from Yogscast. All of them were much older than me.
The vast majority of gaming youtubers that are most popular for kids are in their late 20's or early 30's.
"No one care until i put on the mask" -Project Melody
Asmon's dead wrong about kids relating to content with people their own age. Best example: Justing, the Blue Turbo Power Rangers was famously hated by kids BECAUSE he was their age
A child might not be able to relate with an Adult but an adult can forsure relate with a kid because go figure we were all kids at one point.
A content creator's audience mirrors them. Everything that's happened to Dream and his friends is completely self-inflicted.
it's incredible how asmon can believe a theory he comes up with just because it's plausible.
For me it was the death of Technoblade that pushed me away from their community. Its hard to think about it without wanting to cry honestly. I really loved how that guys videos made me feel. I miss him terribly.
The "Normal pill's" meme is still one of my most favorite

everything i have ever learnt about dream has been against my will.
Looking at current events such as this that causes arguments and debates, makes me envy the half that Thanos snapped away.
Seeing all the dream stuff honestly feels like one of those old cautionary tales from the middle ages, scaring kids not to stay up too late.
Being able to relate to a content creator because of their age and being able to enjoy content doesn't have nearly as big of a relation as asmongold thinks it does. Rarely any of the content creators i watched as a teen were also teens themselves granted there was a much higher barrier to making content back in 2009 but 90% of the people i watched were much older than me. Now that im 27 its a mxed bag of weather I watched people in my age range.
