Elvis Costello, his first performance on SNL. Follow it up with his performance with Beastie Boys on SNL. Edit: You'll have to watch the version with the screen tilted (shh, the pirated version). SNL wanted him to play his hit song Less Than Zero. He wanted to play something else. This was the result.

"Last Child" and "Train Kept a Rollin" are two big Aerosmith bangers that are overdue for a reaction. Then you have a litany of Aerosmith songs that deserve a reaction, "Draw the Line," "Mama Kin," "Toys in the Attic," and on and on.

He still sang "It went by..." , he just pulled back from the mic and didn't hit* the consonants hard. If you listen close, he changes the cadence up through the first two verses, singing it almost staccato. He often embellishes his live performances and comes up with alternate melodies for his vocal lines. The only line he changed was "Dream until your balls turn blue" which is A) hilarious and B) another hallmark of his live performances; he'll often change random lines either as a goof, to comment on something relevant to the moment or to simply cover for the odd, proverbial brain fart. It's just one of the many things that makes going to an Aerosmith concert awesome.

As far as this particular performance, you have to take into account several factors. As someone already mentioned it was a small venue specifically for Howard Stern's Birthday. The backup band for the whole evening (including this song) was Train! After playing this song LITERALLY 10's of thousands of times, he often throws in some minute changes just to keep his sanity. Since it was for his friend Stern, he wanted it to be special so to nitpick this specific version is crazy! Saw them in S. Florida about 14 years ago & may have been one of the top concerts I've ever seen. You can hear him "slur" & change other words in this version with a backing band (Loving Mary) he uses for some side projects. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y52ApJWlZdvOj7g.html and a slightly different version here. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dauLuLGsirirfrg.html and lastly maybe the cleanest version you will ever hear, playing for the Tribute to the Boston Marathon Bombing victims. The opening is so haunting - I would love to hear a stripped down acoustic cover v/gtr or v/piano without the huge dynamic shift when the band comes in. Performed along the lines how Chris Cornell tackled 'Nothing Compares To You'. Or the Boyce Avenue version with a bit more darkness and less rigidity. That 'sing for a tear' line is well overdue for a redo.

I've seen Jimmy Buffett something like 20 times and for the past several years, he's been phoning it in. I think the same is happening here with Mr. Tyler. The elements are here, but these big-time classic rockers don't have to worry about enunciating or hitting every word or note because their concert audiences are there singing all the words. Can't say how many people were there celebrating Howard Stern's birthday, but I'm sure they all could sing this song by heart. Also, being in a huge arena crowd, you don't hear the mistakes like you do if you're watching a professional video of the same. I watch Buffett shows on Margaritaville TV and he sometimes sings the wrong line or flub a couple words or softens his S's and P's so they don't pop in the microphone. But having been there, I can attest that it is very different in the venue. The "blue" line was "Dream until your balls turn blue."

Steven Tyler has always been partial to some scat. I say some skee-diddly-doo-bop scat-tat-tat-tah-yeoooowah! So, don't be surprised if a lyric gets sacrificed now and again.

As a sixteen year old in 1974 attended the three day Ozark Music Festival in Sedalia Mo. Many bands performing there were on their way up. Besides the oppressive heat, naked bodies and drug use much of that weekend is lost memory. However I do remember Arrowsmith playing this song there early Saturday afteernoon.

Not a fan of this version, though Slash did kill it. My favorite is the live version from the MTV 10th Anniversary party that was included in the soundtrack for the movie "The Last Action Hero." That one's an awesome performance from everybody instead of a so-so performance with one guy really standing out like this one, who happens to be a celebrity guest. The one from the MTV party is performed by Aersomith as a whole with support from an orchestra conducted by the legendary Michael Kamen, if memory serves. Not just Steven Tyler with some hired guns.

Easily heard, “it went by”. It’s also a thing singers do to their voice on the A’s, U’s, and E’s. (Usually really hard notes to hit live). But do the MTV Awards one, you’ll be blown away completely. It’s by far the best rendition, musically and vocally. Nobody’s Fault, Get the Lead Out, Last Child, etc.

He's probably been singing the "ball turn blue" line in concert for years (so, it's not like changing the lyric 40 yrs later). A lot of rock performers have alternate, "dirty" goof lines: Bowie in Suffragette City often sang "suck on that titty". KISS's Paul Stanley often replaced the line from Hotter Than Hell "I had to get on the case" to "I had to sit on her face" during live performances.
