I'm 24, never went to college, but I realize I'm passionate about 4 things in particular: Music, physical fitness, literature and writing, and the human mind. I've made up my mind that my main career choice is to be a doctorate psychologist, if not just a baseline therapist. I really want to help people improve their lives, not to mention the demand for psychology is growing every year, and is one career that cant be ousted by technology. Psychology is a beautiful thing and the ones who really care make a huge impact on the world, like the woman in this video.

Hey what up, this is my sophomore year of my undergrad degree. I'm studying psychology and that's probably a good place to start. In college, pretty much your first two years are generals but if you know which degree you want to go for then you can focus some of your classes for that. So, I would recommend studying psychology. Honestly, you don't have to get a degree in what you want to do for your life. For example you could major in Biology, and still go to med-school and go into psychology. As long as they are similar fields, it really doesn't matter too much (especially with your undergrad degree). But if you are wanting to go into the Psychology field, probably best to just major in psychology Hope this was helpful.

I'm currently doing postgraduate studies in psychology. I'm not sure how things work in the US, however, beyond psychology subjects, I would suggest statistics (as many people find this challenging, it would be good to get a head start), and also philosophy subjects pertaining to logic and reasoning proved extremely helpful for critical thinking and formulating arguments when analyzing prior research and writing lab reports (which is a large component of psychology). Best of luck!

The reason mothers are a bigger issue for most people isn't evolution - it's society. We evolved in communities where children were raised by many adults and breastfed by multiple women. The way society is structured today means that if your biological mother is unable to consistently meet your developmental needs (and kids have a lot of them!) then in many cases you have no one else to go to, especially if your father abandons you or is unavailable. Children born today are robbed of the community that once raised them and collectively ensured their needs were met - and those were the conditions that shaped our evolution.

I’m scrapping that plan as if for now 😂 It’s SO exhausting! Even being a University student studying psychology, it’s extremely difficult. When graduating I don’t plan to continue my education due to all the exhaustion and mental energy I need especially as a student, I hope to get a job in any human recourses, counselling, or childcare type field lol. But who knows, maybe I’ll get motivated again!

Doing a grad dip psych. It was suppose to take me three years part time, I am in year six. Things happen, in my case my mother ended up dying after a long battle with cancer. I had to have two surgeries. Etc. With only three subjects left, I ain't stopping though. I want to do research. I'm 56. I'm doing it for the love of the subject, I first started reading psych books when I was 13/14, Freud's works and assuming I live another 20 years, got to have a hobby.

Their is an energy imbalance that comes with nearly all professionals in this field. They have taken on an identity through their belief that our education system is correct. They believe that they know more and can offer the help needed to a client. They are the professional and the client is the patient. Simply in this very simple identity and exchange, it becomes impossible for the professional to be a pure and open vessel for change. In other words, ego get in the way. Their 8+ years of education has solidified in them that they are correct in their assessments. “What if” they’re not? Could they allow their ego to dissolve and be open to this? I’ve found it a very rare thing for these professionals to be able to practice what they preach and leave their ego at the door. In saying this, perhaps this lady is one of them x

I don't understand what you said. Just because you do not practice what you preach does not make you not credible. These professionals are people and are specialized in helping but that does not mean you will always be okay emotionally too. It happens to the best of us. Every single profession has rotten apples though.

Contrary to popular belief, being a therapist requires a good capacity of emotional distanciation in the right circumstances. Treating people with depression and suicidal tendencies, for example, requires one to be able to be able to empathize with the client’s emotions and suffering yes… but it also requires one to be able to stay composed, think critically and logically about the best steps to take and treatment plan when there is a crisis situation. The therapist to cry and get emotional when the client opens up to them, may hinder the therapeutic process by dissuading the client from further seemingly “causing suffering” to somebody else, feeling like a burden for example, or by shifting the attention from the client’s needs and situation to the therapist’ reaction. At least according to modern Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, it is deemed counterproductive and unprofessional, that’s why you see therapists and psychologists in movies often offer Kleenex to their clients who end up being emotional and letting their emotions show… while the therapist themselves stay clam and composed in that scenario, no matter how tragic what the client might be going through. In order to solve complex problems in someone’s life and make a proper analysis of the situation, they need to remain calm and think rationally and effectively about actively solving the situation, it is their role… The client can be perturbed or emotional to the point of not thinking as clearly, so it wouldn’t be helpful for the therapist to enter the same overly emotional state and start crying and hugging the patient, since they wouldn’t be helping in a constructive way by overshadowing their client’s emotional state with theirs. A good friend might act like that and it can be cathartic to have someone relate to your pain and empathize without restraint, but yet again, a good therapist is not just a “friend” or “a shoulder to cry on”, that is a misconception. They are somebody with extensive knowledge of human psychology and evidence-based structural therapeutic frameworks, some of which are proven to help enormously X type of psychopathology but not Y, and other therapeutic frameworks are proven scientifically and statistically to help Y type of psychopathology and not Z type. Yes, some therapists can empathize and share a deeper bond/transfer with the patient at some point, usually past numerous sessions with their client. But it isn’t 100% of the encounters that are like that, and catharsis has its limits as so far as healing trauma or curing phobias for example. You need structured frameworks of behavioural activation, CBT journaling, deconstruction of problematic thought patterns, guiding the client towards self-realizations about their views in the world and distorted cognitions, etc. In that role, one needs to remain calm and think critically and do structural analysis very often.

They are regulated. We're not torturing animals, there used to have non-ethical studies back in the days which actually were necessary regarding all the theories we now have but it's now prohibited. It's the kind of experiment for example putting rats in a room with different exits and see which one they are taking. It's all about studying the behavior. At least here in Europe there is a strong ethic around research and labs

SceeppyMU confining an animal to a cage is torture in itself .. everything else you do to that sentient being , restraining, experiments, isolation , and removal from natural habitat , is just added torture. The system is set up that way. Isolation and torture. The animal therefore has a low immune system due to stress of being tortured. I will never consider animal studies to be accurate or validated. It’s a criminal fraudulent industry
