This doctor of psychology is the very first to explain clearly that certain therapies are specifically designed for specific client presenting issues and concerns verses finding the best model that gets results for client issues! Thank you so much for asking the right questions and for the psychologist providing clear responses!

I'm looking at changing my major to psychology to eventually go down the clinical route and this definitely helped me understand what all that would intel.

Im about to start studying psychology in october with dreams of becoming a clinical psychologist so this was very helpful thanks!

in the U.S. and Canada, the primary difference practically between a psychotherapist/counsellor and a clinical or registered psychologist is that the psychologist is trained in formal assessment processes and can give diagnoses. Whereas the former do not. Yet, in terms of therapeutic modalities and interventions, they all emphasize evidence based interventions and can employ a wide range of them based on their training. There is a lot of overlap in that sense.

The diagnostic aspect is a tad overrated in the sense that psychologists often get it wrong and then try to crowbar treatment modalities into the mix to fit with their diagnosis.

Also in Tx at least, both can diagnose. Although, I do not find it helpful to. If we are being honest it’s more so for insurance purposes it seems and for access of care

A major difference as well of course is pay and the way you are subsidised by government/insurance companies. Here in Australia you get a larger Medicare rebate if you have the title clinical psychologist vs just "psychologist" for example.

I've just started at Sixth form and aspire to go into Clinical Psychology in the future, this was very helpful to get an insight!

All are expected to REPENT AND BORN AGAIN, to LIVE HOLY AND GO AND SIN NO MORE. All are weak in the daily fight between their spirit and flesh. They deceived you through all these “diagnoses” and they steal your money, through all the pills which you “need”. I do really appreciate this video, and I do have one wish for future videos that cover similar content-Give more time and weight to the notion that there is not just one way to be a therapist and there is also not just one way to be a “Clinical Psychologist”. If we are assuming that the audience is going to be people learning about clinical psychology for the first time, then we need to be more thorough and careful about “hard stop” statements. If my only information about what a clinical psychologist is and does was this video, then I very easily could walk into my first therapists office, ask what their therapeutic orientation is, and if they say anything other than CBT or a CBT-cousin, then they may be delegitimized/devalued. It’s just a random thought I had, nothing too serious, but I figured I’d share the stream of consciousness. Discussing common factors research may also be helpful in identifying mechanism of therapeutic change that are empirically supported.

Totally agree with your point about all therapies being essentially evidence based otherwise they wouldn't be in popular use. CBT is hugely overrated imo.

I find it comes across as more than a little arrogant to assume that being evidence based and quantitatively measurable is the preserve of clinical psychologists and what sets them apart from other therapeutic approaches

I’m going on my 3rd year in psychology and my wish is to go into clinical after but I’m getting myself worked up because I’d like to have some on hands work experience. Any advice on that? Thank you for your informative video.

Good day, thank you for the video. I couldn’t find info about the salary in this video, and I guess it’s part of the profession, so I wonder if it’s true that average salary for experienced clinical psychologist is around 50k?

The danger with private practice/sole trader psychologists is that there is nobody watching them, so they can get away with potentially unethical behaviour. They can also become too set in their ways.

Very true, I think this can also happen in the NHS but yeah in the private world anyone can call themselves a 'psychologist'

@@FrancisMadden My concern isn't about just 'anyone' calling themselves a psychologist. It's just too easy for a dodgy person to operate in that industry, especially on their own. Unless major misconduct has taken place, it's basically your word against theirs. Many of these people have the necessary qualifications and are clinical psychologists as well. I've had direct experience with them.

I’m not entirely sure that measuring (objectively) outcomes through psychometrics is what defines a clinical psychologist as opposed to any other psychologist…a forensic psychologist or a counselling psychologist can also implement the use of psychometrics…

The Mentalisation-Based therapy the CP mentioned using was created by a man who moved away from a career in clinical psychology into psychoanalytical psychotherapy.

Every licensed "therapist" uses "evidence-based models," to treat their patients, as well as various modalities like CBT. : )

Almost same amount of time invested. Psychiatry 3 times the money plus more power to make decisions and more respect. Statistically easier to get into med school than a PhD psych program. Tougher load to be a psychiatrist of course but work hard for the MD or don’t bother. I have a PhD in clinical psych.

​@@Rascal8372 Psychiatry is a way longer route... In the UK, to be a clinical psychologist, you need 3 year BSc + 1 year master degree (which is optional) + around 1 year (usually 2 if no master degree) clinical experience + 3 year Doctorate. So, in total around 7-8 years. To be a psychiatrist, you need 5 years med school + 2 years foundation training + 6 years of psychiatry training to specialise. That's 13 years. Also, I'm not trying to dunk on psychiatrists, I think they're very important to the multidisciplinary treatment along with psychologists, but psychiatry is not very well respected among laypeople. Whether it's from the anti-psychiatry movement or the view that psychiatrists overprescribe drugs.

@@sirbaguette8378 in the US it is 12 years for psychiatry and 10-12 for clinical psychology to be completely licensed. The money difference is massive. Early career psychiatrist 300-400k vs 70-110k as a psychologist. Psychologists in the US can prescribe in some states with another degree. That only adds a small chunk more. Being a psychologist takes too long not making any money to finally make what your peers in other fields are making the whole time. Not enough money to catch up bc of student loans for some and years of lost earning. Psychologists get very little respect. We have to defer to MDs. We are treated as masters degree counselors and not paid that differently from them.

Can I ask how many years have he studied? And was it hard?

To become a forensic psychologist you need a doctorate degree and a license under the Board of Psychology (BOP). It takes at least 11 years to get all of the degrees and to complete the list of requirements for licensing.

I was first convinced that my father had a psychological problem when I gave him a brand new high quality winter jacket yet he would not wear it insisting to keep the jacket he found at the run down old nightclubs he had bought... this junk ratty jacket wasn't anywhere near as warm and made him look pitiful as it finally dawned on me that was his intention all along. I had seen several odd behaviors out of him but this was the bombshell that made me realize he was just like his brothers who could never keep anything nice or look vaguely presentable choosing instead to walk around with bushy unkempt hair ill-fitting clothes and worn out shoes despite very well having a pocket full of money and a surprisingly large bank account They had a strong mother who died early and a weak simpering father who left the family likely to pursue a gay lifestyle Six siblings in all and three males lived rough disheveled lifestyles while all three females were seemingly healthy and normal in every way

Psychodynamic therapy is also evidenced-based. This is the problem with a lot of British schools and models obsessed with CBT as the gold standard. It’s great, but long form types of therapies (psychoanalytic, Jungian) surpass the incubator effect whereby the client experienced relief from symptoms for a very long time past the end of the therapeutic relationship whereas with CBT that’s rare. This guy is a bit ignorant on that point. Do your research.

Just curious- not to sound rude, do u have experience with that? Ive heard psychodynamic therapies are always a lengthy and expensive process, also being ineffective compared to modern CBT and all...
