"There was a lot of thermal paste, I must say..." :) Well, you took good care of that, Adam! I, however, have not re-applied the paste in my AL-4L-V2 N305 . . . it runs well (quite low thermals) with whatever was applied in Guangdong. Thank you for documenting your process ;)

Didn't expect a chiplet design - remember when intel was ripping on AMD for doing exactly what they are now replicating? :'p

@@pixelsafoison The second chip is the chipset. This has been a standard thing on laptops for ages. It doesn't have CPU divided, with IMC and cores on separate chips, as AMD does.

You mean that some BIOSes can support over 16Gigs?! - I wouldn't have gone with a soldered-on 16Gb LPDDR5 N100 mini PC as my low-power proxmox server had I known that x). Meh, no matter what, these tiny N100 machines are amazing at what they do. 6W TDP, running a dozen active LXCs including my local subnet (got a dual 2.5g model), 2 VMs and being the quietest and least energy-hungry piece of equipment on my desk while having more than enough ressources to spare (running it at 25% capacity on average). Hell, even my wifi AP is using more power... Should anyone be watching this to check out if N100s are worth it: hell yeah.

Yes, built with 1TB ssd and 32GB RAM, it feels like you don't need to care about how many resources you are assigning in Proxmox :) Soon (4.02) I will upload video regarding power consumption and powering it using POE splitters (I tested few of them), because it idles at around 6-7W... But keep in mind that you need a latest unit with latest BIOS. On cwwk site you can buy it with 32GB ram, so their latest BIOS supports 32GB and I got mine with pretty new bios (november), older might not (I remember to my desktop PC bios updates with 48GB support).

applying a new thermal paste directly to the paint layer, being too lazy to remove the paint, is a dubious solution

Hello I am fairly new this whole tech space. I am thinking of adding external fans. Would a intake on the bottom be good or a exhaust on top of the heatsink be good? Or what config would be best when adding external fans in your opinion?

  • @HobbyWithAdam

There is PWM FAN header inside. Out of the box you will get 5v fan which you put on the top and it will be fine. I saw people were adding fan inside the casing (30x30 or 40x40) and it will still work because case has mounting holes for fan. Best and enough be something quiet on the top, but if you don't like how it will look, smaller fan inside would be good too (pointing air up, cooling SSD and mobo from down) This thing is so energy efficient that it needs just anything extra

It really depens on what you will do on windows, its heavy... If you want to have standard native windows experience, I would bet it won't be possible. If installed only for example spotify player with external sound card + windows only drivers, I would give it a try ;)

@@user-ry3ou4qc5p I have tried both and finally went with opnsense, I have PPPoE glass fiber->ont-> 2000upload and 600 download, Assigned 2 cores, and 2 cores are utilized, the key is to assign virtual network bridges (LAN and WAN) and more than 1 core will be utilized. I'm getting about 2100/600 without any problem, I was worrying about it too ;) Will do soon video what I have set there and how its running (spoiler, its fine :p)

@@user-ry3ou4qc5p I have kept both VMs configured and got pfsense for emergency. I have started with 0 knowledge about each one, just saw pfsense in my company maybe twice. Opnsense because: - pfsense changed their plus license to be paid now (even it doesn't affect me, shame on them.) - opnsense has better UI - I heard something about bugs in unbound in pfsense which is my priority feature (adblocking, recursive dns server) - I feel like updates are more frequent in opnsense There are not much differences, just opnsense was nicer to me (setuping PPPoE is tricky on both...)

@@HobbyWithAdam thank you. there is a 4-nic version of this from the same producer that can also hold 4 nvm.e drives via a 1-to-4 adapter, but all the usb ports on that are usb 2, 480mbps. i think this is a better choice. (:

@@BurhanIrmikci I didn't need 4-nic version because good approach is to just have WAN and LAN, software bridges are bad. 4 nvmes with reduced speed, yes, you could do ZFS pool and forget about ssd wear, I just put 1TB ssd wich 600TB TBW and I think I'm still safe. But note 4 nvme power consumption comparing to one. this 2 port version with one drive idles at about 7W :)

@@HobbyWithAdam sure, this one is smaller and enough for most needs. i was just thinking how it would be to use a single device for router, transcoding, homelab servers, and *an all-ssd silent* nas. (: the product you have reviewed in this video has a development version with the same spec which can also be expanded using an 1-to-4 m.2 adapter, but that one needs a fan since it doesn't have a huge heatsink like this one. sigh! gonna make up my mind later, apparently.
