One of the best videos on the back tension principle. The thing with the verticle plane helped me realize I was doing it wrong all the time! When drawing the bow my right hand kept going outwards slightly before pulling back in to my cheek. It wasnt effecting my shooting directly, but when doing many shots I realized how much energy I wasted, because I didn't do that cleanly! Thanks a lot you two!

Hi again Jeff, if you watch your videos closely your will always learn something new with each repeated viewing. Never could figure out what or where the "J" stroke was, but I think I might know now. When you bring you bow arm up, your string arm paints a "J" with the tail at the front of your motion ending with the straight part of the "J" going back to your anchor. As I stated in my other comment you described me to a tee, trying to transfer to back tension would lead to a collapse. Now with the deep hook, my arm is a lever and my back tension is automatically engaged. The instant improvement is astounding. I cannot wait for my next official shoot and to see under pressure if I can do as well as I think your coaching has improved my form and overall shot cycle. Sincerely Rick Mansberger

Disagree with me if you want, but Lucy has the most perfect, effortless draw of anybody I've ever seen. It's better than her Dad's, as he readily--and proudly--admits. I think Chris, Grizzly Jim, and Wolfie might agree with me.

Jeff, you make a lot of sense. I never really understood the "squeeze both shoulder blades together" either, when in reality, the bow arm just has to push. Also a constant pull with the rhomboid makes more sense than the transfer. Thanks, you are making correct form seem more simple.

I've been shooting for 2 months and the club I'm in are a bit short on coaching. Your vids have proved invaluable to me. I now shoot quicker and more accurately. I've incorporated some of your techniques into my own technique and I now feel no tension in my arms and shoulders when shooting. Thanks to your assistance I've increased my target shooting score over 60 arrows by about 100 points, (343 to 439) with just changing my technique, and that was in just one session. Strangely I didn't get sore back muscles after my normal 2 hour session, in fact I felt quite relaxed yet energised.

Than you very much ! i found these tip very useful for me. As a olympic archer, none taught me back tension in a so brillant way...Now i fully understand it. It's not a tension ( tensions not necessary must be deleted) it's a way to use powerful back muscles and reach a better alignment. Probably the archer will feel more relaxed not more tension, if did the draw correctly

I just came in from the most productive practice I've ever experienced. Thank Jeff and Lucy. You pointed out something that should have been painfully obvious. I'm a little older than you and recovering from a recent shoulder injury. I've lost some body strength and muscle mass. Starting with the bow arm lower is much easier for me to engage the proper muscles and take the tension off my arm and shoulder. I think I'll be OK if I don't over do it.

Thanks for another inspiring video, Jeff (and Lucy!). I have a request: What about breathing technique? In another very inspiring (and classic) account of bow shooting, Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel, he devotes a chapter to the importance of correct breathing as part of the shot cycle. It would be great to see you do a video on that. Btw, just in case you haven't read the book (it is short and fascinating), I strongly recommend it; basically a tale of a German philosophy professor in Tokyo struggling for five years to understand Zen by learning Japanese archery from a Zen master, and the tension between master and pupil.

Like your jacket! I have one like that! I have a couple archery vids Garth Byron and you may find them there! Our form may not be perfect but we have fun with it! Hope your shoulder is getting better! Thanks!

Too bad I didn't start watching your videos 20 years ago! Better late, than never, I suppose. Thanks for the great advice.
