Drawing on Public Transport, Trains, Stations (tutorial)

This is how I draw on public transport such as trains and at stations. The most important tip: AVOID EYE CONTACT!

once I was sketching a really stylishly dressed guy in transport, and he noticed that I was drawing him. I tried to hide my sketchbook but he just approached and asked to take a photo of my sketch :))

This is not related as much, but I remember an interview with a street photographer. He would wear this orange vest over his outfit while walking around with a bulky camera. The 'official' look this gave him would cause people to ignore his presence.

Thanks Teoh, these are great tips for covert sketching :) I find that drawing with a fountain pen in public attracts attention....simply because many younger people here have not seen one before (older people are interested too....) so sometimes draw with a "normal" ball point.

That depends on the country, in some European countries it'll be less of a big deal since people learn to write with them in second grade and should use them till 4th, some use pens after that, others stick with the fountain pen.

Ah, yes, Teoh, the curse of people looking at their phones in public transportation! Too many people end up looking like they're sleeping because their heads are down and theyre fiddling w/their phones. I tend to concentrate on faces because that's more interesting for me but when someone is fiddling with their phone, even if they have a great face with many interesting lines on it, I'm usually forced to bring in at least the shoulders & arms so that I can show that they're actually fiddling w/ their device & not just snoring. You make a very important point about avoiding eye contact, I feel like my secondary objective after a good sketch is avoiding getting punched in the nose. But then, this is New York. Perhaps people in Singapore are more polite. A quick note in support of your point it is much better to move your eyes rather than your whole head because people are less likely to catch that you're looking at them if they just see a flick of your eyeballs rather than your entire head jerk away if you get caught. It may sound like a frivolous point, but our fellow sketchers need to keep in mind that their safety is more important than a good sketch. Again I may just be speaking as a new Yorker, but you get my point. Another great video!

Heh, this is sort of humorous about how you pretend not to look at people. I tried sketching on a bus a few weeks ago and I realized then that there is an issue with people not wanting to be drawn which is weird too because drawing is less intrusive really then all the security cameras that are out there. Thank you for making all the vids.

  • @rusmanyt

It was interesting to hear about all that tricks. As for me - after 2 years of almost everyday drawing people at subway I don't give a damn. It was just a 5 or so times when someone obviously didn't want me to draw him, so he turned away. It was never something even near aggressive or problematic. Sometimes people watch me draw but lose interest pretty fast. Also there was one time when a couple of cute girls approached and asked me to show them drawings. Well may be they expected to see beautiful portraits but drawings was pretty shitty so they left with disappointed faces. That was painful. I have a couple of examples if you interested. vk.com/artofmetro?w=wall-60733340_5711 vk.com/artofmetro?w=wall-60733340_5700

People say all sorts of silly things. If you let them get to you, it makes you upset. But why should your mood be determined by what they say? After they say things like that, they go back to their day as if nothing happened. So just ignore them and go back to your day as if nothing happened too, except you made a nice drawing that you can be happy about.
