FYI- there are adapters for the Cricut that you can find online (made by third party sellers) that allow you to use any pen you'd like. You might also try out the different embossing tools for the Cricut then applying leather antique gel. Works pretty well.

Wow, seems like there's nothing you can't do, from looking at your intro. I found your channel as I was looking for instructional videos on how to cut leather with a cricut. I'm convinced it is worth buying, thanks for your efforts.

Thank you for this video, it's made so many things in the craft easier. I did some experimenting and found that using Sharpie brand pens and Tan Kote finish does not cause fading or color changing. I apply the tan kote with a damp cloth. There's been no color fading or smearing.

Beatnac will seal it. I use the cricut markers all the time on leather

Very cool. I did not realize this was an option. I want to make some small tags to attach to crochet work, and was worried about painting the engraving to show. Do you know if the pen drawing will work on a faux leather piece though?

This is amazing. I really do like the end results, but it seems very advanced. The process of doing the design on the computer totally went over my head. Do you have other videos that give a more step by step process? The air brushing process is beyond me as well, not a process I know how to do. I would like to do it, but seems it would be a significant struggle. Beautiful work though.

Well done. I’ve been playing with engraving/foiling leather patches. This is a game changer. I wonder if an alcohol base ink pen would maintain a true black. I love how you used the leather stain through airbrushing. Excellent choice of medium. ❤❤❤

I’m new to vectoring and doing a bunch of research on it and the terminology used here has me taking a lot of time watching this video as it’s packed with new information for me, personally. I’m having a lot of difficulty understanding the purpose of different vector file types, and am hitting a wall when it comes to my searches because I don’t know how to verbalize what to search. My goal is to design my own cards, using single line drawings of my own design. I know vectoring needs to be done to accomplish this, but I’m still struggling to understand which vectoring file type will cancel out the double line. Feeling so out of my league right now after so many research attempts !

You can use the cricut infused ink pens or you can use micron pens in the cricut with one of those pen grips as an adapter and the black ink will not change or smear once it dries...You could also use the embossing/engraving bit on leather then use fiebings antiquing paste which works very well

This is what I came here to ask. The video completely skipped the drawing part. What pens were used may have something to do with the ink running or not. So the infusable pens need to be heat set after use?

Hi Tim, this is great. I design in Illustrator and want to do a fairly simple faux leather patch to heat press to a cap. The design is one colour with a tree graphic and text. I want it to be filled in by the infusible ink pens so that both design and text are black. Thoughts on how to accomplish this with .ai?

I used the knife blade for the Cricut Maker, and used standard Cricut pens, .4 black and .3 pink (didn’t have red, but on leather the pink looks a little red)... you can buy the packs on amazon. Cheers!

Great job! Have you considered dying the leather first and then cutting and drawing with the Cricut?

Have you tried putting gold or silver foil on leather with Circuit's new foil transfer kit ?

might want to thin down the dye quite heavily with Isopropal alcohol. This will help it to absorb into the leather, as opposed to drying on the surface. the end result is far less sun fading

Love this. I would like to know how some of your patterns work on faux leather. I've made one so far. I also need to know how to tell what oz my real leather is. I was given 2 pieces. 1 in small amounts is thick and hard to cut. Other looks like snakeskin and is softer and supble. Cricut will cut both but I have not perfected my settings yet. It came from a shoe company. I am VERY interested in your backpack idea. But will need it to have pockets inside and out. 😊

Can you draw with any pen? Also what dye did you use on the leather. I just bought leather and this is a game changer

Brilliant work. This has always had me curious. Want to note to you, Tokenole is an edge finisher, not a top coat finish for leather. And you said it correctly!

Thanks! Isn't tokonole a natural wax product that replaces gum trag? I thought you "could" use gum trag for a top coat - so I thought the tokonole would be work the same. That's at least what Chuck D says over at weaver in one of his videos. But I by no means am any kind of expert. This is about my 3rd project. :)

@@ThisIsHowIMadeIt I use this daily. It is a japanese water based edge burnishing creme. For most leather crafters, they find it far superior to gum trag. No wax inside tokenole. Meant to heat and fuse fibers on the cut of leather. Will give it that beautiful glass finish on an edge, with lots of sanding from 300 grit to 1500 grit and heat from friction of a burnishing tool or canvas cloth. Then some will put a beeswax on the edge after that. Also used to slick the flesh side of the grain to give it a smooth finish vs the sometimes rough feeling that can be very fibrous compared to the grain side. Until now, I had never seen someone place it on the grain side of leather outside of accidentally. I have maybe 4000 hours in leather crafting, thousands of hours in tutorials, books, videos, and classes, and I have barely scratched the surface.

After it dries - I tend now to use just simple leather balm. Wipe on gently - let it dry for a minute or two - and polish with a clean rag

I believe 6oz would be max... 4oz is definitely easily done!

What is the max thickness you have been able to cut with your maker? I have an explore air so I know it won't cut as deeply, but I am considering cutting a pattern with a single pass just to make an outline to follow with hand cutting and punching.

I use a medium to heavy tack contact / transfer paper. I put the non sticky side down on the mat, then put the leather down on that. It keeps the mat clean (the rough side of the leather will ruin the mat) and it keeps it firmly down...

I have a cricut maker3 machine and I'm trying to put a patch on a leather vest and wondering how could I put it on my vest?

I have a couple of questions about this - did you use the cricut pens to draw on the leather? And what did you put down on the mat before placing the leather on to be cut? Thanks!

Yes, the circut pens. So, if you place leather down on the cricut mat rough side down, you will really ruin your mat. It leaves all sorts of fuzzies behind. So I grab some high tack contact paper, really sticky stuff, and put it smooth side down on the mat first. I actually find that holds better than the mat itself...

What pens did you use

Have you tried heating or ironing the piece after you draw it on to “set” the ink? Cover with a cloth or butcher paper and iron, moving the iron around the remove pepper and cool and finish?

I get almost everything from amazon. The leather was 2 or 4 oz leather from weaver, again bought through amazon. The pens also came from amazon, and were found by searching Cricut ultra fine pens...

What kind of leather did you use?

Cricut pens are not permanent. Perhaps you could try Sharpie ultra fine point pens which do fit in the Cricut and are permanent.

What software do you us?

This was very interesting. Thanks for putting it together and sharing it. I don't have a Cricut (yet) but based on what I saw you do with yours, I will start researching the various models and hopefully pulling the trigger on one soon for my leatherwork projects. Here are my thoughts on the black-turning-blue issue... Does your Cricut use 4 colored pens similar to an inkjet printer? When a printer makes black, it may build that black up using the other non-black ink colors: cyan, magenta, and yellow, in addition to black. A richer black color is achieved by making it with all four colors. Anyway, I wonder if your Tokonole rubbing is removing the black ink but somehow leaving the other colors behind? I'm not sure how that would happen but you strike me as the kind of person who will investigate and get to the bottom of it.

Definitely get the maker. I think it is the most capable. And it uses a Cricut black pen for it. No mixing of colors.

When Corter Leather and Cloth dye their leather wallets they give them a coating of gum tragacanth to finish. So maybe give that a go?

It is good at cutting patterns in 4oz or less leather - but not very good on cutting small details. So if you want to cut out a circle or something sure. You can look at the video my dad was a maker in my channel to see how the Cricut did with small details...

I have a few. For this one - I am using an ultra portable really cheap one from amazon. I have better ones, but this is easy and convenient to use.

Thanks! No, just the pen. To be fair, I don’t think Cricut thought of people drawing on the leather, so the pressure by default is a bit high with leather being thicker... it probably does engrave a bit as it draws. Or emboss.

This Is How I Made It thanks for the reply. Any tips? I used the .4 cricut pen it faded and it stopped writing after a few words I used it on the backside of a more raw piece of leather. Didn’t know if that had anything to do with it

No idea. I only ever tried it on the smooth side, and my leather was maybe 2oz so thinner. Maybe it was too thick for the pressure? Remember it thinks it’s drawing on paper or something thin

A truly helpful video and so well produced. Except for just one thing. Please on bended knees cut the music out. You have an excellent narration voice, style & pace but the music makes it VERY hard to listen to. I've produced & edited hundreds of videos and made this same mistake, so just trying to respectfully help. New subscriber, thanks again!
