I’ve been making art for almost 50 years (with interruptions of raising a family) and love getting new tips to improve my drawing skills. I have focused on watercolor the last 6 or 7 years. Always more to learn. Thanks!!

We lived in the bush and I clearly remember squatting in the dirt beside my father as he drew cartoon characters he made up and I copied them. I remember being a little upset that my drawings didn't look exactly like his. They were recognisable as his favourite characters though - men, horses and dogs. His favourite character was a man wearing a hat with a cigarette in his mouth. That was almost 70 years ago so I started very young with the idea that pencils were for drawing with. Since then I've had the idea that I am some sort of an artist. My first official drawing lessons were Saturday morning school when I was 9. All other students were adults. Then I used how to draw books for years. Later I attended the Flying Art School where I was encouraged to continue painting and had lessons in oil, watercolour and acrylics. I went to Art College for a few months but wasn't able to stay. Then I had a few decades trying to keep in touch with my art while I worked full time and raised children. Now I'm retired and getting back into it. My main focus these days is photography and making KZread videos but I'm trying to get back into watercolours and oils. I think I'll give the acrylics a miss. I also love to work with coloured pencils. I have used all of the materials you demonstrated in this video. I found it interesting and useful to watch. The one I use the least is charcoal. I hadn't thought of using conte with charcoal so might have a go at that. I do have both mediums and have used them both but they are not my favourites. Currently I'm most interested in watercolours and oils. But I do love coloured pencils too. Thanks for your enjoyable videos.

I never believed I could draw or paint. It always perplexed me and I often would give up after not much effort. Had a sudden motivation at 34 and some belief I am more capable than I always believed. I stumbled on your watercolor videos which helped me begin that journey which in tandem helped me to learn how to draw. You are so thorough and you explain all the small details of creation which has helped me learn more in just a few weeks than I had in 34 years. Just wanted to thank you for your inspiration and talent! 😊

hi. I am 60 and I started painting and drawing two months ago. Then a month ago I shattered my right wrist, my dominant hand. But I’ve kept up with it anyway and I think it’s actually helped me be more adventurous. I love your videos so full of information.
I have turned 70 and have never drawn in my life. My niece gave me some art books to look through and have discovered a whole new world. I have been drawing for a few months now and even created a small acrylic painting. I am loving it. I find your tips in this video excellent and have learnt much, thank you Michele.

Especially like drawing, pencils & paper. Enjoy putting pencil to paper whether writing, sketching or drawing. Always happy to have a pencil with me thanks for showing the graphite pencils. All my life I’ve enjoyed pencils & paper ( over +70 yrs. ). Thanks.
those matt graphite pencils look really cool ☺
After being told by my school art teacher that I was no good at art, I tried drawing 50 years later and found I could do it after all. It was like being given a present. Now I love drawing and painting. I use a lot of watercolour drawing materials and find them easier to use than paints. Your channel has helped me enormously in my belated art journey, thank you so much Michele

That's great Carol, onwards and upwards!
Only recently found this channel and really enjoying it. I learned technical drawing during my engineering studies ( the pre-CAD era ) and always enjoyed sketching technical subjects. That then progressed to drawing buildings. After many years, I'm coming back to it, and learning again from scratch. This video has been really useful, thanks.
I also like to use Faber-Casell kneaded eraser to pull up some of the charcoal for fine lines or bring out stronger highlights
That was fascinating Michele. What a smorgasbord of tools to choose from. I'm thinking, I wish that I had continued my interest in art as a young person. There is so much available to express oneself. I could keep myself busy for a long time learning to use all these materials. Now, in my retirement, I am back at the beginning, learning to draw. You are inspiring me, there is much to look forward to. It is amazing to have access to instruction from someone of your caliber; you are not only a very accomplished artist, but a great teacher. Thank you so much.

I’ve been drawing since I was a young girl though life got busy as an adult not allowing much time for it. Though I managed to go to college in my thirties working on my art once again. I appreciate your helpful advice.😊
I'm in my sixties, I used to draw in my youth . I am trying to decide what medium to choose. Your videos are very good.
I went to a few art classes years ago but only drew with pencil and charcoal (loved charcoal.) Didn't do any more until last year when i had an urge to draw, did a bit of drawing with pen and this led me to watercolour which I started September last year. Now I can't imagine not drawing/painting. Thanks for another great video!
Thank you Michele
Fabulous tutorial. Many thanks!
That was great,thank you!
Thanks for the tips about watercolor pencils! Very useful.
Loved this.
I am thrilled that you have explained all these different types of drawing tools, pencils, inks, & mediums. I am glad you got some Matt Graphite pencils for this video too. I feel a bit more confident about using some more of these after watching this informational video. Your explanation & examples have been very helpful for me. I have been doing drawing, sketching, & painting with watercolors & gouache now for 4 years come this Autumn 🍂 October 2023.Thanks so much for sharing this specific video with us! 💕😉

The Wolffs Carbon Pencil also comes in more than one grade….and you can dilute the line with water …..can be very useful combined with watercolour too as the line diffuses
I didn't know you could sand a stump. Thanks always great to watch you.
Love using charcoal. I am learning and practising more with charcoal
I was a very creative child, never been interested by a TV, much rather lived my own stories and creations. As a teen life was incredibly hard and I couldn’t even pick up a pencil, let alone anything else and it took about 20 years before I could make my way back to any form of art. Now I’m enjoying art again and been drawing, crafting and painting for about 4 years now. Learned a lot through YT, you’re one of my favorite person/resource. I tend to like watercolor best because it is a lot easier than towing around all the acrylic paint stuff for what I want to do. I don’t have my own space to do my art so everything must be portable or in an easy small accessible space around my recliner or bed. Even my car has a colouring book and pencils. I always take some form of art with me, even take it into any shop or visit to anyone, since I can get an anxiety attack or my PTSD triggered and well, I definitely do need something to do, draw, scribble, to get me out of it, together with a Noice Canceling Headphone blasting music to get me functioning again. Life has given me a lot of baggage but in a way, these weeks are among the hardest I’ll ever face and I regret the fact that I’m far to often way to exhausted to even sketch out something to paint later. But boy, I’m glowing internally if I Can end my day with a quick sketch (or more ❤). I wish I could have telekinesis to draw and sketch (since my arms and wrists are often at fault if I can’t make anything, however small art related it may be, I have learned that I thrive when I’ve made something. The other reason for wanting telekinesis is for playing with my cats, one of them always just snaps the string attaching human to toy and well, not much incentive to play after the toy drops “dead”, as far as that one’s concerned lol

As usual, this video was so useful Michele. I’ve been following your channel for about a year now and have always been able to draw but hadn’t done any drawing for years until I decided to try watercolour painting. I’m happy to report that my drawing skills haven’t left me, which has been one less thing to worry about while I’ve been learning to paint. My interest in drawing has also been re ignited so it’s good to see what options are available before laying out the cash. Thank you ❤

I was so confused about the different drawing tools, graphite, charcoal, conte etc. This really helps. I’ve downloaded so I can watch several times to lock in the information. I’ve recently retired and am exploring drawing and painting. I’ve taken several acrylic courses through the senior center but am really just getting started with watercolor. I’m really bad at watercolor but I’m very patient with myself and have lots of time to explore (God willing). Thank you for your videos, I’ve learned so much!

I was always convinced I'm not good at art (conclusions drawn from art classes in school). About 2 years ago I rediscovered some yt channels that I used to watch for entertainment in the past, however this time they made me realised art is not just reserved for professional artist (as that's what I had in my head for years, telling myself I'm not an artist so I shouldn't do art). last year I've tried to dabble here and there, tried out a bit of pencils, colouring books, markers, tried to teach myself how to draw/sketch however I was struggling with it a bit so haven't achieved much still. This April however, I've finally bought myself some gouache paints (I've felt drown to painting ever since I've started trying out art 2 years ago, but always felt a bit intimidated by it and overwhelmed by the amount of things you need to buy to start) and skillshare membership and I am so happy I did. I enjoy it so much, now I'm also about to try out watercolour. I think it will also give me more motivation to polish my drawing skills once I will feel like painting something more challenging that will require sketching. I'm also looking into buying Inktense pencils you've talked about, as maybe they'd be a kind of bridge between painting and drawing for m. Just waiting for them to go a bit down in price or to find them on some nice sale (maybe black friday...? 😉 )

I'm glad to hear you've gotten back into art! I hope you enjoy trying out Watercolors :)
Thank you for yet another helpful video Michele. I have several points I would like to make; I hope you don't find my post too long. First, to answer your question, I sporadically drew and painted since kindergarten, mainly acrylic. Due to the lack of economic resources, I can count the number of pieces with one hand. It wasn't until 2020 and in my 50s that I first touched watercolor and started experimenting. I found your channel trying to educate myself on the medium. Second, you just answered a question I've been having for a couple of weeks: what is the difference between watercolor pencils and Inktense? Thank you for that. Third, I have learned so much about tools from your videos. For example and among other tools, I just bought myself an embossing tool that looks like a pen, and today you inspired me to try the Derwent Inktense and the matte pencils. Fourth, you have a video on what to do when you are not inspired to paint, and I wanted to add that one thing I do is watch your videos. That usually motivates me because I see cool techniques, and I want to try them. Lastly, one thing that attracts me to see your videos is your voice. I see other talented artists on KZread, but some may have a monotonous and boring tone. I want to silence the video, but I know they have very important information. So I chose not to watch them instead.

Thanks so much Madhya! Someone once told me I sound robotic, and someone else said they could see me reading the script. That made me laugh because I don't use a script, just some reminder notes 🤣

I am also expanding my English vocabulary: kitchen paper, for example. I won’t feel offended if I enter an art shop in the UK and be offered a rubber 😅
I've been drawing a couple of years after a 25 year break. @in the studio with Michelle webber , just a heads up, I've found with inktense if you apply thickly in a heavier lay down and wet the do tend to move a bit after they're dry if you wet them again. I haven't worked out if this is the inktense themselves or the paper yet, still experimenting x

Oh, we have Bic too!
Excellent info. for which tool/product to use when and why. My set of (beginner) charcoal pencils came with a 'bonus' Carbon sketch pencil. I have no idea what/when I would use that instead of graphite or charcoal. Is it just a personal preference or do they do something special?
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
Жыл бұрын
Carbon is just a combination of graphite and charcoal. It will draw like a pencil but be blacker and smudgier, I would use it to add fine detail to charcoal.
My partner was an artist and I much too selfconscious to dare to try out my creativity. I only started after my partner had died and witih surprise I realised at about 50 years of age that I was able to actually draw. That was about 5 years ago. I notice lately though, that I don't always have enough energy to do it properly. Nevertheless I really enjoy drawing, as it is the only thing I feel I'm more or less good at. I have used Ballpoint pens too, to practice drawing without erasing. It's amazing the effects you can get out of them. Even Fotorealism is possible with ballpoints. Aquarell is too unpredictable for me. But I am thankful for your tips on Watercolour Pencils and your Drawing Tiips.

All depends on the style and if you want the pencil to disappear or be on display afterwards. If you want it gone then an hb can work, press lightly and erase at the earliest time possible, providing the paint is dry.
