Yes, it helps me a lot to have a good sketch before painting. I used to be lazy and want to go straight to painting with crude sketch. But now I use 2/3 of the process to sketch and 1/3 to paint.

David Curtis seems to incorporate quite a lot of graphite shading into his watercolours and the grey of which seems to somehow lend a curious iridescence once the colour is painted on top.

Sketching is paramount, it is how you define an edge. The graphite or charcoal provides value. Try something fun, by answering this question; what are your favorite 2 colors? I wonder what your sketch would look like in your favorite colors. I'll look at Watercolor Cafe for your post.

Good afternoon Eric, You say, around 3-mins in the video, that you've never been inside the Pasadena City Hall. You REALLY need to go inside. A couple of other very cool public builds the Pasadena bridge for example or any of Frank Loyd Wright's creations. While I do reside in Spring, Texas now, I grew up on Monte Bonito in Eagle Rock. Los Angeles has several iconic architectural structures, you have a blessing living in the area, a unique form of architecture was created there and lived only for a short while from 1921 thru 36 known as Storybook Cottages. They're everywhere from Burbank to Alhambra.

I always do sketches prior to painting however, if there's too much led, the paint become muddy. Is there a better way to avoid this? I also use a soft eraser to not harm the cotton paper. In your video it didn't look like the pencil led effected the painting.
