Drawing Fantasy Weapons that Make Sense - Some Ideas

Ойын-сауық

Fantasy art doesn't have to be realistic, obviously. But it's arguably better when the design has a certain logic rather than being mostly random.

    In a nutshell: -No pokey pokes -Smooth grabby part -Blade is waistless and gradually fat only towards pommel, if not straight -Spikes catch, not deflect -Pommel is any shape but not too long to get user -Guard guards -No floaty floaters = no complain

    I think point 3 should be "Blade can hold own weight" Quite a few historical weapons get wider towards the tip. Most have at least some curve like the Kukri or the Kora, but some are straight like the Indian Khanda.

    As someone who plays Dungeons & Dragons, I would explain Fantasy Sword Design like this. "Design your weapon so it's still just as effective when you walk into an Anti-Magic Field". If the magic gets turned off, is the welder of the sword Fucked? Or do they now just have a sharp, non-magical, but still effective fighting weapon? What happens when the Magic gets turned off... And your floating bits fall off, your magical force fields die, and your elemental Aura's fizzle? That could even been an awesome plot device! The Big Bad is holding this spiky as fuck, mean looking, totally ridiculous and stupidly designed Sword! And the (Non magic using) hero figures out a way to beat them by taking the fight into an Anti-Magic Zone, and suddenly the Big Bad is stabbing themselves in the wrist and their guard falls to pieces, and bits of the blade fall off or become dangerous to the user! Then the Hero defeats them with superior swordsmanship and skill!

    +Vgf Angel As a Player I do agree with you... but as a DM I see Loads of fun possibility to make very interesting encounters just based on this idea alone! Like the first idea of an overpowered magic user, using a super Over Powered sword and the sword becoming worthless in an anti-magic field. But also aspects were bad guys become Stronger in Anti-Magic fields. Such as magical restraints or bindings that weaken them, but when the magic goes "pfft" suddenly they are free to unleash their primal fury! Just fun ideas XD

    I am a fantasy writer, and your videos in general have been really helpful. Over the course of watching your content, the main character of the book I'm writing has gone from wielding two katanas to wielding two longswords, and from two longswords to one longsword. I found this video really interesting and would love to see more like it. Helps me think of more specific designs for fantasy weapons than just "not oversized with pointy things everywhere".

    Idk if Skall has ever adressed this, but isn't there a certain degree of intimidation towards your enemies when your sword looks fancy as hell while still being perfectably functional? If i saw my enemy wielding a damn fine looking blade, i would assume they know how to wield the thing and be much more concerned for my life than if they just pulled out some common sword you can get from any blacksmith. Of course, fancy looking sword isn't as much a visual clue to a good swordsman compared to how they hold it and their stance.

    almost all dark souls weapons are viable (unless we're talking 50 strength, then fuck off), but you did go with the most gaudy, overdesigned one. artorias's blade is a mess in my opinion. still, it would work as a sword, provided you scaled it to human size.

  • @Yal_Rathol

    @Yal_Rathol

    yeah, and then it apparently grew in size to be suitable for sif to wield. and keep in mind, artorias is like, 12 feet tall. any weapon designed for him is way out of a human's range. but, scaled down to something you could lift and swing without your spine popping out, you could definitely use it as a sword.

    I think that was more of a "yes please do that." Also i would assume tenticles would have larger handles so one could have more surface area to wrap around which would give more force. Granted i know nothing about swords myself but in terms of physics that would make logical sense.

  • @BlazingMagpie

    @BlazingMagpie

    7 жыл бұрын

    Sorry, my mind blanked out "how" part. How exactly different apendages would affect the design really depends on exactly what sort of appendages combatant has. For example, I think creatures who only have tentacles as appendages might use some sort of gauntlet to secure the blade on, as that should feel (I assume) more natural to use than wrapping it around the handle. Ones with pincers would most likely have very few one-handed weapons and bladed weapons, as edge alignment would be very difficult for them, if not impossible when using only one pincer. Creatures with more joints might have very similar weapons, depending on the structure of hand, but they might also use more whips, as their arm structure should allow to make stronger blows with them than the beings with less joints. Of course, that's just few of the possibilities.

  • @antonymash9586

    @antonymash9586

    I Think that if you had an extra humb the weapons wouldn't change much but disarm technique wouldn't work. Somethig like a puch dagger or a tip spike for tentacles and maybe a wearable siccor gauntlet for pincer claws.

    i believe it's sanderson's law of magic. it's always more interesting to learn what magic _can't_ do, rather than what it can. fantasy has to run on consistent rules, otherwise it's just a stream of consciousness with no bounds, limits or coherence. the only time a character should ever break an established rule is if they're a god or stronger, and even then only on occasion.

    There is a use for giant weapons in fantasy, and that's for giant (typically not human) wielders! The Zelda series often portrays Moblins as being the size of gigantopithecus! So obviously, they'd use weapons bigger than any human could use effectively. This begs the question, though, what weapons and tactics would humans (or smaller species) create to fight much larger species? THAT'S something I'd like to see speculation on!!!

  • @perunalastu77

    Spears would be pretty effective, they're not heavy so even a child could potentially use one. And they have long reach, which is the number 1 thing you want if you're fighting someone much larger than you. Also very effective in formation.

  • @TheRomanRuler

    As said before, spears and other weapons used to hunt mammoths are ideal. Problem solved, case closed. If on other hand you want some more un-orthodox design, how about "close quarters ballista". It would function like ballista, but instead of hurling shots at the enemy, spear would just stab at the enemy before it would be pulled back and "shot" again.

    No it wouldn't make the weapon non-functional (depending on where the stones were placed), but it would not be something you would want to use in combat. Weapons that were jeweled, with gold and silver inlay were symbols of wealth and/or social status (a manly piece of jewelry); mostly the person carrying such a sword would also have a plain serviceable weapon tucked away somewhere and/or a bodyguard.

    You could keep it going for a bit if you focused on one thing per video, specific sorts of weapons or specific problems, or specific problems for specific weapons. And while things not to do might dry up somewhat quickly, things to do at least for more realistic designs could last longer and be quite helpfull honestly as an artist myself. Id love to see a thourough guide/explaination/thing to weapon design from the view of someone who probably knows more than the average wikipedia researching artist. For people outside the enthusiast it can be hard to find these things as you have to know the right terms to research... and sometimes your just lazy and work off what you think seems right from media.

    This is why I make practical fantasy designs, then use magic to enhance them, rather than using magic to account for shortcomings of a poorly designed weapon. Like, the design I'm working on now looks like an ordinary, though ornate, longsword, and the only magic elements of it are that it never rusts and never needs to be sharpened, it can only be broken or altered by god-forged weapons or tools, and its enchantment makes it cut through dragons like a hot knife through butter.

  • @FrenchLightningJohn

    @FrenchLightningJohn

    if you want with the ornament you can use it as a mean to gather magical energy, like putting a ruby to gather fire magic to have a flaming sword, or a sapphire to have a frost spear, etc.

    blackgrayden Well, this particular weapon was forged by the gods, so the magic is inherent in the weapon, and the gemstones on it are purely decorative. The same goes for this sword's rival. The mortal-forged weapons would have different means of infusing magic into them.

    Concerning the argument "it's just fantasy; it's not supposed to be realistic", here's my two cents: There's such thing as willing suspension of disbelief. Basically, fantasy design works only when a person looking at that design can accept that it could work in the setting it's in. With knowledge of historical weapons getting more widespread, threshold of believable designs is getting lower, thus many formely somewhat accepted designs get questioned more often. If it falls below that line, everyone who can see that will have problem with it unless authors come up all neccesary explanations, which can cause even more issues, especially the answer's "it's just magic".

    The struggles of being ambidextrous. Nobody is quite sure what hand is your dominant hand, and for some reason unnecessarily judges you for that... I've never quite gotten that logic. I get that's not what you're saying, I'm kinda just voicing a complaint. Either way, I'm only ambidextrous because I have a habit of accidentally hurting myself, so I've gotten used to using my non dominant hand. That eventually just turned into me being ambidextrous. Yay me, I think...

    Hey Skallagrim, I really like where you're going with this. I want to add something that bothers me that I think is in line with your point here. Simply, fantasy weapons usually attempt to appear more powerful than mundane weapons. Or, alternatively, fantasy people are more capable of wielding larger, heavier weapons. In either case, the appearance of weapons are altered in an effort to make it obvious that the person/weapon is more powerful. They'll take a war hammer or an axe and give it a huge head or they'll take a sword and make the blade really, really big (both broad and thick). The argument is always "well, these super strong fantasy people (orcs, maybe) are capable of wielding such massive weapons." Sure, yeah, that's all well and good, except that if you consider those weapons with knowledge of how medieval or melee weapons work in reality you'll find that simply making them bigger is not the most efficient way of improving their performance. If we had a hercules in real life who could wield a weapon 5 times more massive than the weapons mortals can wield we would find that his weapon would not simply have a head that was 5 times the size; this would not be the most efficient way of utilizing his superior strength. Is a bardiche a more powerful axe than a dane axe simply because it has a much larger blade? Or does it, in fact, spread it's weight over a larger area causing it to have less penetrative power in exchange for a much larger cutting area?

    The energy sword and the way Sangheili use them seem more for stabbing and thrusting rather than slicing and slashing. That and having a second thumb on what would be your pinky really limits your fists' upward and downward movement *a lot.* Not to mention being painful if you try and force your fist upwards against your forearm with just one thumb, let alone two.

  • @Yal_Rathol

    @Yal_Rathol

    7 жыл бұрын

    to be fair, the energy sword was never designed to be used by humans. they hijacked it. plus, with the way an elite's body is made, i imagine a staple of their sword fighting is the lunge, their legs are just built to drive them forward _really_ fast. so, it would make sense that a weapon designed for thrusting, catching blades in mid-dive and twisting left or right would be developed. doesn't excuse the wrist-stabbing spikes, but hey.
