either shade in the whole place your making the raindrop in, and then erase to make it look whiter than the rest of the paper, or you can just use a white colored pencil

+Shai Smith He's not doing anything that you can't already see clearly. A lot of shading and at the end you add few highlights. Pay attention, you'll see it's not as hard as you think :)

What kind of paper should I use for graphite drawing? I am a complete novice.

+zainalu Any paper will be ok to get started. Good quality watercolor paper can be a good choice. Or other types of thick drawing paper made for illustrations. For this drawing I used grey card paper. If you want to do this type of drawing and cant find grey paper you can blend a grey background using graphite.

+Ana Patrícia Barbosa Yes. The only requirement is that you add highlights using a colour that is lighter than the background. If you start with a dark background this can be easily achieved with a light coloured pencil.

I never knew there were different types of pencils until I really started getting into drawing and my art teacher in middle school taught us the spectrum of pencils. Trust me, there isn't just a "normal pencil" xD
