SKETCHENDEAVOUR! In this episode Andrew Tischler draws a barn in a field using a variety of pencil techniques. Starting with the initial thumbnail process in the sketchbook, he moves on to a larger drawing to work out the idea and then progresses to a final rendering establishing all of the tones and textures.

I feel honored to be amongst your viewers and students, Andrew. I am only 1 year into my artistic journey. It was inside of me my entire life waiting for me to become brave enough to "try" and to give a voice to that love that I had convinced myself was only available to "other" people. You are easy to listen to and organized in preparation and in your delivery; this is helpful for my learning style, which has held me back in the past. Thank you for sharing your insight, stories and deep comprehension of the many diverse aspects of art with the multitudes, as well as with a little ol' Colorado girl like me! I am just a new born baby on this journey and have so much to learn. I feel I am in good hands here 😃. Krissy

I turned 40 this year. This is my situation also. Always thought it was out of my reach until I actually tried properly. I went from watching useless videos on youtube to art tutorials and did a stint of drawing every day for several hours for three months and my was I suprised! Thanks Andrew for the inspiration and videos.

Absolutely beautiful. I am a Navaho Indian, born on the Navaho Indian reservation in Arizona. At age 6 my father moved us to the Kennecott mine in Utah. Unable to speak English I started school, but eventually learned, not good but used my drawing to move ahead. I did drawings through school but did okay I think, as kids and teachers liked them. I left school and joined the Air force at age 17, requesting to be an artist. The recruiter said we got a job for you as an artist. Went through basic training and waited for orders to be assigned as an artist at a military base. I was told that I was going to be a refrigeration specialist. Anyway, I kept drawing and eventually, I was able to cross-train into the Graphics field. Eventually made rank and became a supervisor. Did a lot of signs, charts and so boring, I added sketches. As a senior NCO, I became a Detachment Chief with over 60 people working for me. Still did quick sketches, wherever I went, all on personal time. Still drawing but not much. I am 75 yrs old now and I came across your site and enjoying it. You have impressed me with your artistic ability. My favorite medium is pen and ink. majority of them are quick sketches on site without any preliminary sketches. Did not own a camera so I had to a few minutes. Had played with charcoal, graphite, water colors, some oils. The arts I did as a boy through high school have been lost when my mother moved back to the Reservation and were robbed. thank you and love your ART.

Andrew you've become one of my favorite artists, not just because of your artistic skills but also because of things like your work ethic, innovation (like building your own equipment for example), your conversational/interviewing skills, and your ability to teach. You are always trying to improve and you also want to help others improve and I think that is really beautiful :) You also seem like a really good, kind and down to earth guy. Thank you for everything you do. I hope you and your family are staying safe during this difficult time ♡

Hey Andrew and friends. My name is Brett and I have been drawing most of my life. I am in the process of changing mediums from graphite to Oils. This is huge for me and I searched the web for artists that appealed to me. I came across you Andrew and you have been a companion for my art lessons for a few months now. Just a note of gratitude for sharing so much of your craft. When I figure a few things out, I will start posting and would love feedback. When looking at atmospheric depth and those colors I now have gone from "what color is that really?" to knowing the mix. That has been huge. I will comment more as we go, but ... Hello, my name is Brett. It is an honor to meet you all! Love sketchendeavor as it appeals to what I have been doing. Learning much.

Facinating your concept of making small drawings, than creating bigger ones with some more details, and going on from there. In studying classical music it works the same. Playing short phrases until they stick going on to the next phrase, glueing them together. Bit by bit. Working on dynamics like nuances in a painting. Thanks a lot, greetings form Norway

Hi Andrew, same here...watching your video while having breakfast; it's soothing and inspirational ; I had a stroke a year ago, and lost the function of left arm/hand.I have not been able to draw or sketch in just over a year now, and I was left-handed!It really is a challenge trying to do the same with the right hand after 40 plus years of being left-handed. But just as the small steps to creating the overall image, it's the same in recovering from a stroke; lots of small steps to get back to proper ability. As a fellow artist, it's great to watch you and listen to the process! It gives me hope! I may have to learn to do art again with the right hand; if my left doesn't want to play anymore. So thank you for sharing your knowledge and insights sir! Much appreciated!

Hi, Andrew! I certainly do appreciate you and your teaching. One thing that I do when drawing grasses is emboss the paper with an old paintbrush that is sharpened a bit on the wood end. Then, if you use the side of a pencil's lead, you can kind of skim over it and darken the shapes that result as you wish. It makes for either very random or, sometimes, very precise control of the marks on the paper. Thanks again for teaching me SOOOO much! Cheers! David Hullings

10 hours of listening to you talk Andrew...mmmm, Yeh I could cope with that :) But for now thank you so much for this tutorial. I have a photo of a 100 year old plus barn in Tasmania (which is sadly no longer standing...a young couple inherited the house and they thought the barn too dangerous so bulldozed it, it broke my heart.. after all it had stood for 100 years') which I have been putting off painting forever, now I know how to set it all up. How ironic that only last night I asked you in another video if you had any 'drawing videos' and what pops up today, but a whole segment on drawing.. coincidence...I think not.. FATE!! I look forward to watching more of these awesome videos. Love that drawing board.. must weigh a ton with that concrete block on the bottom. BTW do you always sharpen the life out of each pencil with a knife rather than a sharpener.. any particular reason you don't use a sharpener? other than they never work properly? cheers from Western Australia :)

Man... the way you compose your paintings/sketchs is just amazing!!! I think this is one of the aspects that really sets you apart from other artist I have seen. It really does pay off to just follow the process. And personally after doing sketchendeavour for the past couple of months, I feel that its the best thing that ever happened to me!! Wish that it had happened sooner!! Anyway, cheers and looking forward to that painting tutorial!

Interesting to watch your very nuanced and controlled technique - i learn a lot of possibilities of materials and how to use them to make all kinds of marks.
