SKETCHENDEAVOUR! In this episode Andrew Tischler draws a barn in a field using a variety of pencil techniques. Starting with the initial thumbnail process in the sketchbook, he moves on to a larger drawing to work out the idea and then progresses to a final rendering establishing all of the tones and textures.

I forgot how relaxing it was to listen to Andrew.
I feel honored to be amongst your viewers and students, Andrew. I am only 1 year into my artistic journey. It was inside of me my entire life waiting for me to become brave enough to "try" and to give a voice to that love that I had convinced myself was only available to "other" people. You are easy to listen to and organized in preparation and in your delivery; this is helpful for my learning style, which has held me back in the past. Thank you for sharing your insight, stories and deep comprehension of the many diverse aspects of art with the multitudes, as well as with a little ol' Colorado girl like me! I am just a new born baby on this journey and have so much to learn. I feel I am in good hands here 😃. Krissy

I turned 40 this year. This is my situation also. Always thought it was out of my reach until I actually tried properly. I went from watching useless videos on youtube to art tutorials and did a stint of drawing every day for several hours for three months and my was I suprised! Thanks Andrew for the inspiration and videos.
Your mild teaching method is simply wonderful, love how you teach throughout the illustrating exactly what you mean. I've started drawing again with real happiness
Absolutely beautiful. I am a Navaho Indian, born on the Navaho Indian reservation in Arizona. At age 6 my father moved us to the Kennecott mine in Utah. Unable to speak English I started school, but eventually learned, not good but used my drawing to move ahead. I did drawings through school but did okay I think, as kids and teachers liked them. I left school and joined the Air force at age 17, requesting to be an artist. The recruiter said we got a job for you as an artist. Went through basic training and waited for orders to be assigned as an artist at a military base. I was told that I was going to be a refrigeration specialist. Anyway, I kept drawing and eventually, I was able to cross-train into the Graphics field. Eventually made rank and became a supervisor. Did a lot of signs, charts and so boring, I added sketches. As a senior NCO, I became a Detachment Chief with over 60 people working for me. Still did quick sketches, wherever I went, all on personal time. Still drawing but not much. I am 75 yrs old now and I came across your site and enjoying it. You have impressed me with your artistic ability. My favorite medium is pen and ink. majority of them are quick sketches on site without any preliminary sketches. Did not own a camera so I had to a few minutes. Had played with charcoal, graphite, water colors, some oils. The arts I did as a boy through high school have been lost when my mother moved back to the Reservation and were robbed. thank you and love your ART.

Thanks so much for the comment Fredrick! Its good to hear that despite life taking over you still kept up with drawing!
I am a big fan of your art
Thanks for concentrating on technique and process so heavily. It's also incredibly helpful to know exactly what tools you use.
Thanks for these video's M" Tischler.
Andrew you've become one of my favorite artists, not just because of your artistic skills but also because of things like your work ethic, innovation (like building your own equipment for example), your conversational/interviewing skills, and your ability to teach. You are always trying to improve and you also want to help others improve and I think that is really beautiful :) You also seem like a really good, kind and down to earth guy. Thank you for everything you do. I hope you and your family are staying safe during this difficult time ♡
I love these tutorials Andrew, thank you!
I have learnt so many techniques through your this tutorial. You explain every little point in the easy way and language. Its really very valuable for me. Thanks.
Hey Andrew and friends. My name is Brett and I have been drawing most of my life. I am in the process of changing mediums from graphite to Oils. This is huge for me and I searched the web for artists that appealed to me. I came across you Andrew and you have been a companion for my art lessons for a few months now. Just a note of gratitude for sharing so much of your craft. When I figure a few things out, I will start posting and would love feedback. When looking at atmospheric depth and those colors I now have gone from "what color is that really?" to knowing the mix. That has been huge. I will comment more as we go, but ... Hello, my name is Brett. It is an honor to meet you all! Love sketchendeavor as it appeals to what I have been doing. Learning much.
Thank you! Your tutorials are invaluable!
Quality drawing Andrew, thanks for narrating through the process.
Wow, you’ve come far! I wasn’t looking forward to adding that white charcoal, but I’m very glad I stayed to watch the progress!
Thank you so much Andrew. You are amazing artist and teacher. You encourage me to draw, to paint and progress with passion every day. Thank you :)
Thank you Andrew for your passionate teachings. Not only am I learning about art, Im also learning the patience needed in order to achieve something magical.
This series is amazing. Thank you Andrew.
you artwork inspire us! thank you Andrew!
I love your barn drawing Andrew! It makes me remember my home town where I grew up at the foothills of the Himalayas. I'm thinking of drawing those landscapes, something v close to my heart 😊
Facinating your concept of making small drawings, than creating bigger ones with some more details, and going on from there. In studying classical music it works the same. Playing short phrases until they stick going on to the next phrase, glueing them together. Bit by bit. Working on dynamics like nuances in a painting. Thanks a lot, greetings form Norway
this makes so much sense to me. I keep going back to the idea of making these on the road so that when I get back home I've got composition and value studies based on what I saw as the light changed and as I re evaluated the scene.
Thank you Andrew for the wonderful sketches, it really gives me inspiration to draw and paint
Love all your videos Andrew! I am a fan of your work

wow! my friend...I love it...you are inspiring me so much!
Love all of your works .... finding lots of useful knowledge watching ...i just want to say thank you for the awesome video and inspiration ✌️✌️
It's a retirement hobby for me, not a lifelong vocation, but I still want to be the best I can. So it's wonderful listening to quality teaching about technique from someone's who really knows what he's doing.
Andrew, many many thanks fpr being so encouraging and sharing your experience. Your easy way of 'coming across' certainly gives motivation along with points and reminders some of us tend to forget. (At least the bits we knew). I picked up on the way you 'feel' about how the daily drawing practice has helped you personally, why it's so important even if it seems laborious it's better for the end result. Oh my, time to get going and improve!
Man... the way you compose your paintings/sketchs is just amazing!!! I think this is one of the aspects that really sets you apart from other artist I have seen. It really does pay off to just follow the process. And personally after doing sketchendeavour for the past couple of months, I feel that its the best thing that ever happened to me!! Wish that it had happened sooner!! Anyway, cheers and looking forward to that painting tutorial!
Great video...this is how people become masters in their craft Thanks for sharing
Perfect!
Love the way you incorporated the pastel white!
Thank you for the encouragement to keep on keeping on when it becomes tedious to add details
This is so beautiful
Beautiful artwork x
love it sir
Interesting to watch your very nuanced and controlled technique - i learn a lot of possibilities of materials and how to use them to make all kinds of marks.
Excelente...... felicidades Andrew
I like the idea of starting with smaller thumbnails and then slowly (or quickly) building it up from there. Thanks.
Andrew, I wanted to add to your marvelous observations for the roll that drawing plays in painting...well it plays the same roll in sculpture. Drawing creates an autopilot or modus operandi; it enlightens the composition and inspires the process. It is the get-going process! Good on you again....
Really great!
I just want to say how much I've learned from your channel and I don't even paint. You seem to have a great balance on a ll kinds of levels. And you've inspired me when I was searching for someone like yourself. So, please don't ever stop, lol. Great Job!
Another enjoyable video! Thank you!!
The way you draw grass is quite interesting. Petition for a tutorial anyone?
Good tips Andrew, can't wait for the videos...
Tank you.Nice work.👌🙋

Hi Andrew, same here...watching your video while having breakfast; it's soothing and inspirational ; I had a stroke a year ago, and lost the function of left arm/hand.I have not been able to draw or sketch in just over a year now, and I was left-handed!It really is a challenge trying to do the same with the right hand after 40 plus years of being left-handed. But just as the small steps to creating the overall image, it's the same in recovering from a stroke; lots of small steps to get back to proper ability. As a fellow artist, it's great to watch you and listen to the process! It gives me hope! I may have to learn to do art again with the right hand; if my left doesn't want to play anymore. So thank you for sharing your knowledge and insights sir! Much appreciated!
