Im new to this too , but from what I can figure, you adjust it to more than 50% the distance between 2 points to generate the center point of the overlapping points

It´s a property of the circumference, if you trace two of them with the same radius (or even diferent ones) the segment that joins the two centers is perpendicular to the common chord. In this case, he drew a random diameter and positioned the center of those two circumferences that i mentioned on the points where this diameter intersects the main circle (so it is the line that joins the centers) and then he drew with the same radius four little parts of the entire circles that intersect (so the line that unites them is the common chord). The reason why he chose radius with equal values is because the two lines that intersect will do it in the medium point, and this will be the center of the main circle. posdata: i´ve written circle instead of circumference in multiple ocasions in this text, but you have to remember that the circumference is refered to "the curved line or the silloutte" and circle to "the inner part", that´s why it is imprecise to say "area of a circumference" when the precise sentence would be "area of a circle". I hope you like my explanation.
