To do this I need now strength 3 reading glasses and a $25 bucks precision compass :-) I've always been in awe about Gauss' construction, which he did when he was just 19 or so. The original manuscript in the math library in Göttingen, Germany. At least it was there when I was a physics student there in a 1970-ties. It was written in Latin - of course! (🙂)

I tried it and some sides were shorter than others by about 3mm, is this because of my inaccuracy or is this normal? It should be a regular polygon right?

It may be your inaccuracy cuz 3mm is not a huge error and math is much more accurate than human's hands

It was an ancient problem postulated by the Greeks that was finally solved two thousand years later by Carl Gauss.

For human possibility. By rule and compass it is possible to draw 5gone, 8gone, 10gone, 12gone, 15gone, 16gone,17gone. But 7gone, 9gone, 11gone, 13gone, 14 and 18gone will be impossible by these only tools. (Proven by theorem Gauss-Wantzel)
