Still, he made huge improvements since he started, and that is great motivation for anyone who's wondering if they can get better. Also, my former XC coach talked about someone who went from 10 minute miles to low 4 minute miles.

I kinda sucked when I started. Got my 5k time down to 15:44 and half marathon time to 1:11:32. Currently traning to go sub 1:10 in the half, not looking good 13 weeks out though haha. It takes a lot of time and effort put in the miles now and reap the rewards in november is what my old coach would say.

I started out with 33 min 5k beginning of this season I’m about to hit sub 25 for the 5k and we aren’t even halfway through the season. I’ve been last so many times and I sucked it up and pushed forward. Anyone can do it if they simply care and keep running. During summer I started with 8 20 mile now I’m going sub 7 easily which enabled me to go sub 25. Next year I’ll be going sub 20 I guarantee it because I know I can. My dad and brother laughed at me but they’re already shitting themselves from my 8 min + improvement in the 5k in roughly 3 weeks.

8 years ago! Damn, I'm still playing catch up. My progression with PRs has gone from 19:33 in 5k senior year in highschool cut down to 18:03 end of season, then 11:10 2 mile during track cutdown to 10:13 in 2 mile towards end of season. Once I got to college, Went from 30:04 in 8k down to 27:33 at the end. Then, throughout the years I fluctuated from 28:00 down to 26:19 for my final 8k PR during JR year. ANd oonly ran 26:33 my senior year blew up the last 600 meters crawling 6:00 pace :( . I'm approaching my 6th year of consistent training and managed to run 15:42 in 5k on the track and 32:32 10k last/ Senior year of collegiate racing. My final PR for the longest distance I've done is 1:13:01 in a hilly half marathon. I've come a long way but man I envy how early you and alot of other good runners started the sport. I think it's pretty normal to not progress every year. Plateus are the worst but it feels good to breakthrough after another year of keeping at it. I remember when I heard about XC my senior year my friend asked me to join and I asked "how do you try out"? XD. Little did I know just about anyone could join. This sport is either a love or hate sport. Glad I found it. I think it's safe to say that we all love how distance running requires more hard work than talent alone compared to other sports. Anyway, thanks for sharing your story, it sounds similar to mine. Glad we could relate. Good luck in your next few years of collegiate racing!

I was a super fast kid in elementary school and set records. During 4th grade my dad put me in soccer I was way faster than most of the kids but couldn’t make any goals. I then decided to play football in 6-7th grade and I personally think football screwed me up in running, they put me on offensive/defensive line and it made me focus on my strength instead of speed and stamina, now my mile times suck... I’ve been training everyday for a couple months now as I am hoping to run the mile sophomore year for my track team, I’ve also suffered many injuries to my ankles that weren’t treated correctly so I’m worried a bit.

Very impressive times as a middle schooler. I’ve still never broke 5:42 and I’m a 10th grader. But I’m not specifically training for miles Edit: my pr from last cross country season was 17:38 for 5k and 5:08 for the mile. Since then, I have increased my mileage from high 20s last XC season to 40s this summer. I plan to continue increasing until my XC season starts in January. Hopefully all this base training will allow me to finally break 17 in the 5k (Hopefully sub 16:30)

Yo you need to get off the track and run some more miles like up to 50 mpw easy for 2-3 months over the summer, then come back during cross country and run some speed work but keep your mileage at around 40 mpw then hold it on until track season and throw in some 400s, 800s, and strides and you will eventually break 5:42 easily

I love track. I’m not even a year into running, and I’m so excited to get into my first offseason training schedule. I’m more motivated since I got a friend to run with. Skipping summer training for my first cross country season, and pushing it too hard at the beginning really messed up that season, and now seeing this video reinforces just that: when it comes to running, talent does not come without hard work!

I feel similar to the people who start the training of later than most. I started track on 7th grade but I did throwing, sprinting and even jumping for some reason. In 8th grade I did sprinting but that running was never serious. 9th grade, people actually convinced me to do cross country...finally some real training. It started to be something I enjoyed so practice wasn’t too bad for me. My first ever timed 5k was at a seriously hilly course, I clocked in at around 30-31. I ended up breaking my record by like 5 minutes the next race and finished the season at low 22’s. Indoor track helped me prepare for track (which I like much better). My 800s were 2:36 ish and my mile was around the 5:40s. For sophomore year I managed to Pr even more in xc going down 20:45. At track I ran 5:30s and 2:22s. Now I get to my junior year, my xc season teaching the 20:13 5k time which really isn’t that great of an improvement. I am great full I got faster but I know I need to start trying harder..at this point it’s just a mind game with my running

Nice. When I was in sixth grade, I ran a 1:46 800m. I also ran a 3:58 mile. I was first in America. Also, in seventh grade, I ran a 1:32 800 and a 3:36 mile, which put me at first in the world. In eighth grade I tried out for XC, and ended up getting 11:58 on my first race, which once again put me at first in the world. In high school I chilled for a bit, didn’t do much, and then in my senior year I ran a 59 second 800, topped off with a EASY 2:52 mile. It was so easy, I actually beat 6 world records, I’m so cool.
