Do you mind explaining why you draw 2 circles when drawing the head? What landmarks do you use when drawing them? Thanks

Awesome question. I learned this in Kevin Chen's class at CDA. The first circle is just for the mask and face, closing off at the jaw line. The second circle is just to extend the skull. Typically, people don't realize just how big the back of the head is, so doing photo breakdowns like this forces you to realize how big boy reality works. You could just draw one big circle, but really, the head isn't a sphere, it's extended in the back. One major note: keep in mind every ethnicity, individual and head injury have different shapes- make sure to vary up your reference. When starting out, break down photos, understand structure, understand the foundation. once you understand it, then you can break and bend it to your will. All these little babies whining in this comment section don't seem to understand that.

@SomeHumanOnThe Internet There's cases when it's not stupid at all, but you're clearly not talking about the kind of clients who falls into those cases... xD It already happened to me to give my own character sheets to a commissioned artist just because their art style fitted the project I was working on better than my own style. And also because I was busy doing pixelart animations and the portraits that goes with the character (used as promotional material) would never have been finished in time for the deadline if I was working alone on both. I knew the art would match the stylistic choices of the head of project better by recommanding another artist instead of taking upon that task myself and I had some free days to revise the animations if anything was to be added last minute on top of that. So...It's not always stupid to ask someone while you can do it too, but those who really can usually knows how worth art is and at best ask to lower the price a bit when there's a batch of commissions being discussed, not plain says "it's too expensive" unless when faced with 2500$/portrait and being looked down upon when asking if it was a typo on the page. Cause that too tends to happen sometimes, and those artists tends to have a fairly strong following calling you out for scam if you "only pay 250$" because you were assuming it was a typo and shy out instead of asking the question. Stupids and scammers, they exist on both artist and client sides.

​@@mrfcauthen I always tell beginning artists that it's ok to learn by tracing, as long as you're transparent about it. I think it's really important for people who want to draw but are JUST starting out to learn how shapes are supposed to look, to, like ethan said, build up your database. People who are new to drawing don't know how to properly reference a photo like this yet, and it may be a difficult concept for them to grasp right away. I think a lot of great artists who are super creative now started out tracing cars when they were 12.

Wait, you guys watch his videos to learn how to draw!?? I just watch them ‘cause I love his art style, and I like watching him draw. I didn’t know that people actually clicked on a video of his for a legitimate tutorial 😅 (well, maybe new-timers do, but someone who’s been on his channel before, usually already know that you can’t get much learning out of those videos. It’s mostly just fun and games)

And honestly ppl always talk shit about using photo reference but I have friends in school and that's literally all they do. Art fundamentals, artwork from artists they look up and the stuff you see in the museum to use for master studies. Sometimes it's just the lighting. Other times it's the shapes and composition. As long as ur not tracing or legit Copy pasting someone's art and calling it urs, I feel like it's okay to map out basic shapes and form a sketch from ur reference. Bec that's how they teach in school 😂 figure drawing is the same thing except it's a live model and not a pic of someone on insta. If you don't wanna deal with ppls comments at all there is a lot of royalty free references online. I just use myself and a mirror.

tracing while not inherently bad is a crutch. its much better to draw free hand while using a reference. whenever I attempt to draw something new I tend to find multiple images of the same subject to get a general idea of the underlying structure.

100% agree with you on this! I was an art student in high school for 4 years and we were told to study images to learn about lightning, color, shape, style, and proportion. It really is training your eyes to see and learn real life so you can produce life in art. I don't think this process ever stops because even the most skilled artists need to reference something to base their work on. Nothing even is original everything is borrowed it just depends on how you use it and alter it to have a different message. The reference stigma has to end bc it adds pressure to aspiring new artists to suddenly know and come up with awesome art ideas from the top of their head.

D'Jaziko at my school the art teacher made us do the opposite we weren’t allowed to use references at all to the point that guys who’s probably the best artist in the school (my friend) didn’t take the class again since it was so bad. not only that but the art teacher was known to grade the hardest in the school she barely ever handed out anything over 80% even if you tried your hardest not only that but she had terrible criteria’s for projects that would make everything harder on the students

This is actually really really helpful, specially with anatomy. Idk how this video showed up to me but fuck man imma start doing that, i started taking drawing more seriously a couple of months ago and this is exactly the kinda shit i need. I see people always talk shit about this method but like, this is great for starting out and learning the basics until you don't need a reference anymore. So thank you for this video!

When random people ask me if i "use pictures" when drawing i learnt to say no. They'll just assume you trace if you say yes, which is a real shame; referencing is fine and different from tracing, i don't know why i should be less of an artist if i reference. ah it is such a shame. but I also think the stigma around tracing should be cleared up too,, tracing a photo (as ethan did in the video) and even tracing the artwork of an artist you really admire can be very beneficial too for the sake of studying and breaking it down, not to copy it (and obviously not to pass it off as your own, which goes without saying.) I worry for young artists who'll struggle to learn properly because they're being taught that tracing and referencing makes you less of an artist when that's how you practice and get better :((

at my computer animation program, they literally brought in an acting coach to teach us how to to act so that we could make good reference videos for shots that we had to do. almost a third of the entire process of animating is collecting reference. i don't see why this shouldn't apply to drawing and other forms of art as well, so long as you don't trace something and claim it to be your own original work

These videos have been bafflingly helpful to me. Planning on doing a lot of facial breakdowns tonight. These videos are extremely easy to digest mentally, whereas I feel like a lot of other creators I've tried to watch have assumed I know more than I do lol. Great tips with such a simple to the point instruction alongside a very helpful and entertaining demonstration.

I learned a lot in this video, it was extremely helpful ever sense my growth stunted with working on faces. I kept drawing em trying to improve but after awhile I didn't change. Then after doing this for a lot I learned more than I have in the past month. Again, this video helped a lot. Thankyou!

This helps so much when designing the faces of my anime girls. I never tried it before because people demonized tracing so I kinda forgot about it. Yet it's such a useful tool when it comes to learning structure.

I had to figure out by myself this was the best way to improve my drawings because my art teacher never taught us how to do things, she would only make vague comments about our finished pieces. I remember I was watching another tutorial and it said "draw shapes, paint shapes, shape is the foundation of all art" and since then I started making my own method of studying which is the same as this one: breaking down photographs in shapes and lines. I wish I had found your channel sooner, I would have improved way faster. Great video!

Hey, I came here from your Instagram. That's really good content. You're like the Shaddy Safadi of visdev for animation. To be honest I wasn't aware of the Molly Brown issue before I saw your videos. And here is some constructive criticism: I think you should find the right balance between entertainment and education in your videos. Modern day james is a good example for that. Because although I really dig the content, the drama time was pretty distracting. Amateurs will be amateurs, don't try to fight them - just let them be. Anyway I hope you'll keep making these videos, and I'm definitely going to share them and spread the word.

Although this technique actually works, it's not effective all the time, I still encourage studying the proportions and other fundamentals. Don't be lazy lol.

@anyone else from the future looking at this comment: don't be like this guy. Trying to sell something as important knowledge while being too vague to point out anything we don't already know. It depends on the definition of different. If it's very different, then it's no longer copyright infringement obviously. Also most traced art used for improving art skill isn't published, since most artists who would click on this video.. of course know what plagiarism is. Tracing is only harmful if it's hurting people, it's not an inherently evil practice. This is what Ethan's channel says too.
