What a fantastic trainer John Gosden is. The list is short of trainers that are in his league. Just as his superstar mare Enable begins to fade from memory for punters looking to score right now, and his superstar stayer Stradivarius likely doesn't have a lot of racing left for him either, Gosden wheels out his French Derby winner from a year ago who ran quite creditable a year ago finishing 2nd in the Saudi Derby. This time in the big one, Mishriff lands the spoils. Well done to team Gosden.

He more than likely would've crossed the wire 5+ lengths ahead of Mishriff and Charlatan but the salty Saudi's would've created a new rule in that moment which allowed them to fine his jockey for allowing the horse to run too fast and open up by too far of a margin. 🙄 This race is in it's infancy and it's already becoming a joke.

Next day jockeys were pulled off of planes. Interrupted already on taxi for takeoff. Several horses had to be ridden by unfamiliar jockeys. I agree with you. @@junedawes7923 100%. I wish we'd just go back to focusing on the Dubai World Cup as the main international race for our horses to target but unfortunately, that $20,000,000 Saudi purse is way too tempting for the greedy. Imo, they don't deserve the publicity of our best horses participating in their circus. If other owners/trainers elsewhere in the world want to go with their horses, then whatever. I couldn't careless... But as for us? The two years of the race's existence have been nothing more than clusterf*cks for the U.S... Did you see the so called impediment they fined Smith with? The field had literally broke from the gaits and he got Charlatan into a comfortable position (JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER JOCKEY) but apparently Sleepy Eyes Todd was interfered with... I've replayed that specific incident over and over and over, in both regular speed and slow motion, and there's nothing there. Absolutely nothing. Another thing that really grinds my gears is the fact that last year, Smith was fined $200,000 for the overuse of his whip on Midnight Bisou. Mishriff's jockey was fined for the same exact thing this year but instead of a $200,000 fine, he got a $100,000 fine. 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

someone, please explain to me, why Mike Smith was penalized on Charlatan? he did nothing if anyone made it tight on Sleepy Eyes Todd, it was Tacitus - he had his head turned, was on his outside lead, and shouldering over on Sleepy Eyes Todd (they even ping-ponged a little), who didn't/couldn't bull his way to hold that lane, and challenge for the lead (as he had done in the Charles Town Classic, and was maybe expected to do, here), but all I saw Charlatan do, was a very slick, smooth move over a lane, clear of Sleepy Eyes Todd behind him

  • @drudanng.8567

Exactly. I've slowed down the supposed impediment incident and analyzed it over and over... Yes, there was a moment when SET was pinched a bit after breaking from the gate but it was Tacitus who triggered it. Charlatan simply glided over into his preferred lane... It's as if the Saudi's expect the horses to break from the gates and remain running in a straight line the entire time. SET was hardly impeded and the fact that Smith got fined is not only laughable but also infuriating.

The only one of these type of races I like is the Everest because it does attract the best sprinters in the world. There are several factors why international horses choose not to enter the Everest although they are encouraged to (free flights and costs). That is taking into account that July Cup winner US Navy Flag has run and finished at the back of the field. One, it is a slot holders event, to enter you have to pay $500 000 and negotiate with the slot owners. Two, after the EI outbreak Australia has strict and lengthy quarantine conditions as compared to the rest of the world. Three, at various times of the year, due to the difference in hemisphere, the WFA conditions are variable for NH horses. Four, after dealing with the above, Australian sprinters make up the bulk of the highest rated in the world every year and the competition is very stiff. I'm yet to see an Australian make a comparison between a sprint on turf and a middle distance on dirt, but if you do, rest assured they are an uneducated minority that every country has.

Plenty of British and Irish go, just sprinting isn't where the strength is. Maybe Space Blues goes this year, but with the exception of Battaash who's a headcase, there's not many worth the journey. Look at Oxted, he was top 5 European sprinters last year, but unplaced at the weekend

@@diggermcginty870 Slot holders pay $1.8 million but get their slot for 3 years. 2 European Grp1 winning sprinters from Coolmore (they are a slot holder) have come out for The Everest but both were thrashed. Blue Point would have been some hope but Godolphin knew the risk was very real that his reputation would be tarnished if he was defeated so elected to retire the horse instead. I doubt many will come as it's one thing to try and beat an Australian sprinter anywhere else in the world but to beat them in their own backyard is virtually impossible. They are simply too fast.
